Carly Smithson

has whittled the competition down to only five, but sixth-place Carly Smithson isn’t at all bummed to have made it so far. The upbeat Irish lass had a positive outlook for all her interviewers, and no hard feelings toward anyone on the show.

“I don’t want to dwell on negative things. I’m looking forward to going out and making a record now. I’m just stoked,” told reporters.

Today, the usual analytical minds are at work trying to make sense of this recent shocker. Some suggest it stems from song choice - eliminations often do - because the tune Smithson sang on Tuesday (“Jesus Christ Superstar”) is considered controversial among Christians.

When asked (albeit indirectly) about Brooke White’s flub, Carly said “I truly believe after the blunder, she gave a knockout performance. Cut the blunder out, and go from where she restarted her song, and I think it was great.” Of her Idol experience, Smithson said “I’m very, very grateful to the show.”

For the upcoming Neil Diamond week, Smithson was going to sing “Sweet Caroline” with a changed arrangement. What’s next for Carly Smithson? “Make a record. Being creative, writing songs, making a career for myself.”

Meanwhile, ratings are still sliding down for the popular reality show. The results show drew a mere 23.3 million viewers. It was enough to win the night, but for Idol it represents the lowest numbers in five years.
