America’s Next Top Model: Cycle 8: The Girls Who Go To Prom

Top Model

The girls return to their pad after the elimination of Clueless Kathleen.  Yes, she wasn’t exactly the brightest bulb in the bunch…but am I the only one who thought she was at least honest??  Bolstered by her winning photo, Jaslene calls home feeling confident about her chances.  Meanwhile Samantha, the young country girl, is having a hard time adjusting to the all crazy ladies around her.

For their Week 2 crash course, the girls find themselves at a high school football field where they are greeted by Miss J and a marching band. Why the band?  To help the producers symbolize the word of the day:  precision.  Hoping to test their coordination (and their ability to grasp a concept), Miss J lines the girls up on the track.  It’s time for their first runway lesson of the season!  After demonstrating their general ineptitude individually, the girls are later grouped in teams of three.  Now they will strut their stuff in choreographed fashion.  Unfortunately, bad things always happen in threes—and this task was no exception.  Okay, these girls are having a hard enough time walking a straight line, I don’t know how the judges actually expect them to cross paths.  Needless to say, the task did not end on an up note.  Even Jaslene—the self-anointed ‘master of the runway’—struggled.

The girls are then directed to the gymnasium where they meet up with Roy Campbell, runway fashion show extraordinaire.  Pop Quiz Time!  Everything they just learned will be put to the test during a live fashion show for the high school students.  The ladies will have several chances to impress when they model three different prom dresses (ranging from Modern Contemporary to Ghetto Fabulous).  Although the girls have seemingly improved upon their earlier go-around, the show still has its questionable moments:  Sarah’s breasts give the impressionable teens a peep show, Whitney uses the runway as a virtual collision course and Natasha completely spaces out and is oblivious to the other girls around her.  In the end, it’s Brittany who wows the judges the most.  Even when behind on the runway, she always managed to catch up.  More importantly, Brittany really connected with her audience.  For that, she is awarded a large and obnoxious trophy.  Woo hoo!

Back at home, Jaslene overhears several of the girls talking about her.  If she’s the supposed Master of the Runway, why didn’t she win the show?  Good question.  Once again, Jaslene turns to the phone and calls home….this time feeling lower than low.  She’s convinced that the other girls are just haters trying to bring her down.

For their photo shoot of the week, Jay Manuel has the girls continue with the high school theme.  This time, each girl will be labeled with a ‘senior class award’ or cliche.  Although she struggled in the last episode with her anti-abortion shoot, Jael strikes gold this time around as a class nerd.  Also impressive are Felicia as a jock girl and Brittany as the valedictorian.  The judges were also impressed with Sarah and her portrayal of a class flirtBut if you were to ask me, how hard is it to screw up flirting??

Unfortunately, Renee didn’t find her task as easy as some.  Apparently being a class clown was just too much to ask…and she made a point of letting everyone know that.  If she wasn’t crying about Samantha’s ‘easy’ bad reputation shoot then she was whining about Jaslene’s weirdo label (because apparently it wasn’t a stretch for Jaslene).  Nevertheless, Renee didn’t have it as bad as Natasha.  Natasha’s apparent inability to grasp an American concept—they don’t have Teacher’s Pets in Russia??—translated on film.  It was such a struggle to get a usable shot of her that Jay literally had to suggest poses.

Well even if her roommates hate her as much as she thinks they do, Jaslene need not worry.  The judges thought she masterfully channeled Ally Sheedy a la Breakfast Club and deemed her weirdo photo the best of the week.  It’s still surprising to think that the girl who didn’t even make the cut last year has already won the first two competitions of this season.

As for the Bottom Two this week?  That would fall to Natasha and Samantha.  The judges love Natasha’s face but have yet to see her translate that on camera.  The judges also love the 15-year-old country girl but felt her mediocre ‘bad reputation’ shoot might have something to do with age.  In the end, the judges felt like there was always a little more time.  LOSER:  Samantha
