Dancing with the Stars 6: Week 2

Dancing with the stars, penn

The division of the sexes formally ended on tonight’s .  All twelves couples gathered for their last chance to dazzle the viewers before Tuesday’s dreaded double-elimination.

Last week, and Monica Seles scraped the bottom of the scoring barrel (15 points each) while Mario and (24 and 27 points, respectively) made it known they were the ones to look out for.  How did the celebrities fare with Monday’s dances?  Did they do anything in their second outing to change their standing in the competition?

Steve Guttenberg (partner Anna Trebunskaya)

(Dance: Mambo/ Song: ‘I Got a Girl’)
Steve looked very refreshed and invigorated in his crisp white suit and khaki shirt.  Fortunately, his personality also mirrored his appearance.  He was flirty, relaxed and willing to literally get down on the floor.  Even if he is not the most polished dancer, his charisma and smile helps to carry him through.  It really felt like he was having fun.

Len said Steve looked like he was having a great time - but he really wasn’t following the instructions.  The head judge said that the dance “really didn’t work” for him.  Bruno said all the energy was spent in his facial expressions and not enough went into his posture and footwork.  He additionally noted that the actor’s timing and technique were off.  Carrie Ann thought his musicality was off.  Although he got the audience going, she didn’t think he went anywhere with his performance.  Score: 6/5/5 (16)  GRAND TOTAL: 34

Cristián de la Fuente (partner Cheryl Burke)

(Dance: Quickstep/ Song: ‘Americano’)
He may have had problems with his posture during rehearsal, but that was definitely not an issue on the actual dance floor.  Not only did he look good tonight in his hot pin-striped suit, the two dancers looked great together.  Even though it appeared as if he was rushing at times, Cristián did a nice job keeping up with the fast dance.  His joyful and charming attitude made the package complete.

Carrie Ann critiqued his less than sharp footwork but complimented him on his much-improved posture.  Len said “the speed was faster than wind from a duck’s bottom.”  He thought the performance had a wildness about it that he didn’t like.  He said that it was not a “classic” quickstep and that it lacked control.  Although Bruno advised him to watch his feet, he thought the performance was good overall.  Score: 7/6/7 (20)  GRAND TOTAL: 41

Monica Seles (partner Jonathan Roberts)

(Dance: Mambo/ Song: ‘My Lovin (You’re Never Gonna Get It)’)
Monica finally got to dump the unappealing pink dress from last week and sport a sexy, gold fringe dress tonight.  Unfortunately, that outfit was the only sexy thing about the whole number.  Although she tried hard to tap into her seductress side for the dance, all we got was weird hip shakes and awkward gyrations.  I do, though, have to compliment her for really trying to get outside her comfort zone.  She may have been a bit hesitant and unsure, but she was also a trooper.

Bruno told Seles that she really needs to work on connecting with the music like she connects with the ball on the court.  She has to keep on the rhythm if she is going to succeed.  Carrie Ann loved that she came out and attacked the performance.  Even though she doesn’t really have technique, she made a breakthrough.  Len also resorted to sporting terminology for his critique; he said that Monica needed to work on her speed and coordination.Score: 5/5/5 (15)  GRAND TOTAL: 30

Penn Jillette (partner Kym Johnson)

(Dance: Quickstep/ Song: ‘Man with the Hex’)
About the only thing he mastered tonight was the comical bit at the front end of the dance.  Unfortunately, this ballroom style only reminded us of his enormous feet.  There were times when he actually looked like he was running—or even galloping.  Having said that, he did look a bit more agile than he did last week.

Len said the magician did a great job convincing him that he was doing a proper quickstep.  On the bad side, the head judge noted his terrible feet.  Bruno agreed with Len and told Penn that his footwork was “really, really, really bad.”  Carrie Ann actually was a bit more positive.  She found him entertaining, endearing and energetic.  She enjoyed watching him perform.  Score: 6/6/5 (17) GRAND TOTAL: 33

Priscilla Presley (partner Louis van Amstel)

(Dance: Mambo/ Song: ‘Bossa Nova Hand Dance’)
First off, I really hated the dress - from the leopard print right down the the asymmetical, ruffled bottom.  Trivial things aside, I was really disappointed with her dance tonight as well.  Instead of sexy, all we got was stiff.  Priscilla didn’t really show a feel for the music nor did she put her all into the dance.  This style required and lot more hip movement and energy than what she was delivering.

Carrie Ann felt differently than me.  She thought the performance had a special alluring quality.  Len said it was a little bit too precise and not loose enough.  Bruno felt she accomplished it technically, he just advised her to go for the sexuality.  Score: 7/7/7 (21) GRAND TOTAL: 45

Shannon Elizabeth (partner Derek Hough)

(Dance: Quickstep/ Song: ‘Swing with Me’)
Shannon really wowed me tonight.  Not only was she beautiful in her silvery-grey gown, she did a gorgeous job with her dance.  Great neck, turns, leaps and arms.  She was also confident and flirty.  Simply put - she looked like a star.

Bruno said “that’s what dancing is all about.”  He thought it was bright, dynamic and exciting—a shot of adrenaline.  Carrie Ann said her posture and footwork were both great.  Len thought her movement around the floor was good but suggested she be bit a little lighter in her holds.  Score: 8/8/8 (24) GRAND TOTAL: 45

Dancing with the stars, seles

Jason Taylor (partner Edyta Sliwinska)

(Dance: Mambo/ Song: ‘La Lupita’)
I think it’s safe to say that these two make the hottest looking couple of the whole competition.  The bonus?  Jason’s not just a pretty face—he knows how to dance.  Unlike Priscilla, he really put 100% into his number.  He showed no embarrassment doing all the hip and butt shakes.  In fact, he looked like he was having a good time.  He really proved that he has a good ear for the music.

Len told Jason that he was a “winner.”  Bruno said he was strong and gentle, sharp and smooth.  He thought the football player was always musical and always in control.  Carrie Ann told Taylor that he has a really good shot at winning the competition.  Score: 9/9/9 (27) GRAND TOTAL: 49

Marissa Jaret Winokur (partner Tony Dovolani)

(Dance: Quickstep/ Song: ‘Flip, Flop & Fly’)
Uggh - it looks like the ugly pink dress torch was passed off to Marissa this week.  Unfortunately, with the dress also came the curse of the bad dance.  The performance was full of missteps, poor footwork and bad timing.  On the bright side - the energy behind the style was definitely a good match for her exuberance.  She also got to finish off the dance with a cute move between Tony’s legs.

Carrie Ann liked that Marissa was not afraid to go for anything, but she was displeased by her lack of synchronicity.  Len said the dance was a great improvement over last week.  He really liked that she made him smile; she was lovely and bubbly.  Bruno thought it was great fun if not a little fast.  Score: 7/7/7 (21) GRAND TOTAL: 39

Adam Carolla (partner Julianne Hough)

(Dance: Mambo/ Song: ‘House of Bamboo’)
I was pleasantly surprised with his performance tonight.  It looked like he was starting to let go a bit.  Carolla did some cute hip shakes in the beginning and followed it up with some dainty footwork later.  The less formal dance allowed him to be a bit more playful than he could be last week.

Bruno said the mambo was reimagined in a way he’s never seen before.  Although Adam is obviously not a natural dancer, he did manage to make the judge laugh.  Carrie Ann said it was entertaining, even though it was not quite a mambo.  Len thought it was “brilliant.”  There are times when he picks on technique and other times when he just goes with the flow.  He chose to let this dance entertain him.  Score: 6/7/6 (19) GRAND TOTAL: 34

Marlee Matlin (partner Fabian Sanchez)

(Dance: Quickstep/ Song: ‘Mack the Knife’)
She never ceases to impress me.  This dance was especially difficult for her to learn because she wasn’t allowed to look directly at Fabian for facial cues.  But you never would have known that just by watching her perform.  She displayed great footwork, rhythm, posture, timing and balance.  I’m just floored that she can have such a great feel for the music even though she can’t hear it.

Len - who was impressed by her musicality - said Marlee had the potential to go a very long way in the competition.  Bruno complimented her on her great stage presence and execution.  Carrie Ann was blown away by her musicality.  She said Matlin had a natural way of bringing a style to life.  Score: 8/8/8 (24) GRAND TOTAL: 46

Kristi Yamaguchi (partner Mark Ballas)

(Dance: Mambo/ Song: ‘Hey Baby’)
Although the ‘introverted’ dancer seemed nervous about letting go during rehearsals, she stepped up her game when it really mattered.  The former skater - in her rock and roll-esque outfit - opened herself up and loosened up her body.  Everything from her footwork to her hip gyrations were performed to perfection.

Carrie Ann said Kristi hit everything with such precision, it was mind-boggling.  Len said she matched last week’s great number with another strong outing.  Bruno thought the number was fast, sharp and exuberant.  She hit every beat.  Score: 9/9/9 (27)  GRAND TOTAL: 54

Mario (partner Karina Smirnoff)

(Dance: Quickstep/ Song: ‘Valerie’)
I wasn’t a fan of his sleeveless jacket, but it did provide a nice excuse to check out his arms.  Mario may not be a ‘trained’ dancer, but he looked extremely confident tonight.  He started off the dance by catching Karina when she jumped off the stage and then followed that up with a nice turn on the floor.  Unlike many male stars, Mario actually looked like he knew how to lead her.  And what great leaps!

Bruno said Mario was charismatic, energetic and fantastic.  Len thought the footwork was good most of the time and felt he moved around the floor well.  He did critique the singer for “weird” holds though and advised him to work on the finesses of ballroom.  Carrie Ann said he had a good vibe.  She thought he was charming and moved well.  Score: 9/8/9 (26) GRAND TOTAL: 50

Hi Carolina -
If you need to know the singer on that actual recording, I don’t think I can help you there.  The show has a group of singers who specifically do covers essentially of all the songs danced to on the show.

If you are wondering which version you could buy that most resembles the version they did on the show, there is a version by Nino Gomez on iTunes that might work for you.  😊

The Perez Prado version is on there as well…but it’s titled ‘Lupita’ instead of ‘La Lupita’.
