Dancing With The Stars: Week 1 (The Men)
Tonight was Day 2 of the special three-day Dancing With The Stars premiere. Monday was ladies only; this time it was all about the men. Sabrina Bryan set the bar high yesterday with her score of 26. Did any man rise to the challenge tonight?
CAMERON MATHISON (partner Edyta Sliwinska)
(Dance: Foxtrot/ Song: “Moondance”)
The All My Children star knows he has a loyal built-in fan base—but would he do enough to actually earn their votes?
Cameron was a bit stiff his first time out, though it could have been due to the degenerative bone condition he suffered as a child (cue violins now). But when he wasn’t just standing there looking like Edyta’s prop, he looked like he was dragging her across the floor. Len compared the performance to a ‘faucet’ that sometimes flowed, sometimes splattered. Bruno was impressed with Cameron’s long arm lines but said the dance went soft somewhere in the middle. Carrie said they started off a bit weak, but agreed with Bruno on Cameron’s lines. Score: 7/7/7 (21)

FLOYD MAYWEATHER (partner Karina Smirnoff)
(Dance: Cha Cha Cha/ Song: “I Like The Way You Move”)
The WBC Super Welterweight Boxing Champion has been juggling his dance rehearsals while training for an upcoming fight. Would he be able to give Karina the proper attention she demands?
Floyd started with a ton of energy, but brought way too much funk and soul into this ballroom dance. (Didn’t the judges criticize Sabrina Bryan for doing too much hip hop?) Regardless, he proved he was a cool cat with a lot of rhythm. Bruno said Floyd needed to channel his overflowing energy into his technique. Len thought it was a great first round for someone with a lot of potential. Carrie said he needed to bring more finesse and tenderness into his dancing. He needed to remember that Karina was not fighting against him. Score: 6/6/6 (18)
HELIO CASTRONEVES (partner Julianne Hough)
(Dance: Foxtrot/ Song: “Bewitched”)
Helio is the 2nd athlete in a row for last season’s winner, Julianne. Would the two-time Indy champ make lightning strike twice?
Wow. Helio just delivered the total package. He was a smooth charmer with an incredible smile and graceful glide. And he managed to pull tux and tails off. He and Julianne simply make a beautiful couple. Carrie said Helio was ‘debonair’ and praised his natural talent. Bruno thought he was the ‘King of Charm’. Len said Helio danced like he was on cruise control (that’s a good thing). Score: 8/9/8 (25)
ALBERT REED (partner Anna Trebunskaya)
(Dance: Cha Cha Cha/ Song: “A Little Less Conversation)
At age 22, the surfer/model is the youngest person ever in the competition. Would his youthfulness (a.k.a immaturity) hold Anna back?
Albert may have been the least-known person going into the competition, but I have a feeling his (awkwardly) gyrating hips will help get his name out there. His footwork left a lot to be desired, but I’m sure most women were staring at his Ken Doll-esque chest anyway. Len said watching his performance was like watching a stripper (it was pulsating and fun). Bruno said something about Albert’s crotch action—and I then I lost him after that. Carrie was a bit flustered and confused, but she agreed that it was at least fun to watch. Score: 7/7/7 (21)
MARK CUBAN (partner Kym Johnson)
(Dance: Foxtrot/ Song: “King of the Road”)
The entrepreneur is best known for securing deals and making money. Would his business savvy translate to the dance floor?
Despite having had a hip replacement just weeks before, Cuban was remarkably light on his feet. His lip-synching was a bit annoying, but he clearly had a good time. Carrie thought his footwork was a bit off, but was surprised by his showmanship. Len said the performance was neither here nor there. Bruno said his technique needed work but applauded Mark for embracing the dance. Score: 7/7/7 (21)
WAYNE NEWTON (partner Cheryl Burke)
(Dance: Cha Cha Cha/ Song: “You’re The First, The Last, My Everything”)
Mr. Las Vegas has been a performer since he was 4-years-old. How comfortable would he be on this much smaller stage?
Wayne was clearly the stiffest performer of the bunch. If I didn’t know any better, I would have guessed that he was the one with the hip replacement. But regardless of skill, he was a joy to watch. What a classy guy. Carrie thought he was a charming performer and simply suggested he opened up his hips a little more. Len said the dance was fun to watch and included a lot of great basic movies. Bruno agreed with Carrie’s hip action remark and added a slight criticism of the footwork. Score: 6/7/6 (19)
Question of the Day: Who do you think would have a harder time losing—Cheryl Burke or Karina Smirnoff? Karina has obviously been so bitter since she narrowly missed the title with Mario Lopez (I thought she was going to kill Billy Ray Cyrus last year). As for Cheryl, this is the first time she’s had no chance at the title. Just a thought…
