Drew Carey to Pay $1M for New Twitter Account

Share

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Gossip, Internet

Drew CareyOnly in Burbank. host Drew Carey took to Twitter after a Seattle Sounders win on October 3 (I know, I know, who? Evidently, they’re a soccer team…and evidently, Carey’s part owner) to share his joy, whereupon he discovered that the Twitter name @Drew was being auctioned off.

It was being auctioned off by Drew Olanoff, a blogger who has battled cancer. He got the idea to auction off his username, with proceeds to be sent to the LiveStrong Foundation. “I thought it was so much fun that I bid $25,000,” Carey explained to CNN. “I was in such a good mood that I raised it to $100,000.”

Hear that, soccer fans? If you want something from Drew Carey, catch him about ten minutes after the Sounders win.

During an interview, Carey upped his bid from $100,000 to $1 million - a move most would consider to be very bad business (in fact, I’m not even sure eBay will let you up your own bid like that), but I guess it’s all for charity. However, he’ll only give the money to the LiveStrong foundation if he gets one million followers on his new Twitter account by the end of the year.

See, there’s always a catch. Carey’s current @DrewFromTV Twitter account has a paltry 76,000 followers.

I like the family fued and the price is right. I think though that the price is right was better when bob barker was doing it. I watch some of the other to I just cant think of them all right now. I use to watch that game show channel that had alot of the older game shows on it.

I only liked who wants to be a Millionaire & that’s by far the only game show i saw. There are some quite good others too. smile

I use to watch a lot of game shows when I had a preview of the Game Show Network for a month for free, haha. I loved watching Pyramid! I don’t know why, but it was just so entertaining and well, a great game show. I do like the game shows that are on every night too, such as Wheel of Fortune, Family Feud, Price is Right and Jeopardy. I love watching the “Kids” or “Teen” Jeopardy though, it makes me feel smart when I know the answers, haha. How many times have I watched Jeopardy and I would be asking my sister, “How in the world do they know that?” Jeopardy is a truly smart game show and well, I’m surprised at how much all the contestants know! The Weakest Link was great, haha, I don’t remember the hosts name, but I do remember her voice and her glasses.

The title of this post if very misleading since he is obviously only paying $1 million if he gets enough followers. However, you’ve also misrepresented what he said with your “there’s a catch” line. There is no catch. He said even if he doesn’t get a million followers he will still give a dollar for every follower he has by December 31, 2009. If he has 500,000 followers he’ll pay $500,000.

And you’re wrong that it’s a bad deal for him. First of all the donation is a huge tax write-off. Second, he’s getting huge PR from this right now and will continue to do so once he actually makes the donation. Then, on top of that, if you calculate the benefits he can get from having a million Twitter followers, it’s a huge win for him and Livestrong and cancer research.

He’s over 100,000 right now and I’m quite sure he’ll hit a million by the end of the year. Ashton Kutcher added nearly 3 million in a few months and no one followed him because it was for a good cause.
