Kathy Griffin’s Comedy: Out of Control?
!Warning! The following clip contains offensive and explicit language:
What was a routine New Year’s Eve segment turned into much more when hecklers, a live mic and Kathy Griffin were thrown into the mix. Since the camera had cut away to go to commercial during Griffin’s comments, it’s highly likely the comedienne thought she was off the air.
Does that make her comments okay? Either way, Griffin lashed out at a bystander in the crowd. While her comments were likely meant to be amusing, it’s doubtful the CNN audience thought anything she said was funny. “Screw you!” The redhead screamed at an onlooker, not shown by the cameras, before she proceeded to make her vulgar comment (heard in entirety in the clip above).
Read More Perhaps not surprisingly, this was not the only edgy comment Griffin offered during the evening. She joked with the evening’s co-host Anderson Cooper that ex-CNN host Glenn Beck is a “heroin addict Mormon.” In the past, Griffin has felt the glare of the spotlight for other inappropriate comments and her sometimes over-the-edge comedy routines. She drew harsh criticism after the 2007 Emmys for taking a dig at those who thank Jesus in their acceptance speeches. Her own speech was edited by E! to tone down the offensive nature of these comments, which went as follows: “A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus.” Griffin held up her Emmy, saying “this away is my God now!” The comedienne was criticized by religion fans are being “blasphemous” and delivering a “hate speech.” Just another joke Griffin took a little too far. There have been no comments from the Griffin camp regarding the CNN Eve flub, which will no doubt live in YouTube infamy for the next year or so.

Comments:
I watched the show from right before the ball dropped until they went off the air. My family and I heard the comment and although we were shocked to hear it on live TV, we thought it was dunny. Let’s be realistic, why else would CNN ask Kathy Griffin to host. Is anyone really shocked by that comment? LOVE YOU KATHY!!!!
“While her comments were likely meant to be amusing, it’s doubtful the CNN audience thought anything she said was funny.”
Actually it was funny.
I’m going to take a wild guess and say that K.C. Morgan doesn’t mind hearing commercials that talk about erections lasting more than 8 hours. The only thing Griffin doesn’t seem to do right is to buy advertising time on Morgan’s favorite programs.
