More Reasons Why Regis Philbin Should Retire

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Daytime, Talk Shows, ABC, Syndication, Editorial, Video

A few months ago, I listed 8 reasons why I thought Regis Philbin should start making his retirement plans. Now I would like to add a #9 and #10.

#9. Back in May, the talk show host was talking about the recent American Idol finale when he said, “What happened to the past winners? Where are they today?”  When told by co-host that they come on their show “all the time,” Regis responded, “Really? I haven’t noticed.”

#10. Philbin, who actually went to the premiere of yesterday evening, sadly referenced Heath Ledger as ‘Keith Ledger’. (You can see that clip from today’s show below.)

I think the way he refers to himself in the third person is the only reason you really need.

The Keith Ledger mistake isn’t that bad, but I do think Regis should go, as should the show.

I think that Regis Philbin doesn’t like some of the current tastes in pop culture. He’s very much into Rat Pack era artists like Dean Martin.  That’s why sometimes he will say things like Keith Ledger and not Heath Ledger. About the comment about where are the former American Idol winners, he’s just wondering why aren’t they as active or competitive as the well known artists like Beyonce.  Maybe he wasn’t on the show when some of those singers performed—might have been a week when Anderson Cooper or Jeff Probst hosted in place of him.  And Regis seems to be overshadowed by his young Internet-savvy counterparts in Kelly RIpa and Michael Gelman. Those two are very much into Twitter and Facebook and Regis doesn’t want any part of it.  Regis is from an era where you talked to people face-to-face and he likes to talk about it a lot, especially his get-togethers with Jack Nicholson and Donald Trump. Something that the most accessible social networking sites sorely lack. He’s one of the few that will dress up in a suit for live daytime Tv. Perhaps the guests( especially the male guests) who come on in jeans and tennis shoes should take a cue from Reege and show some CLASS!
