Nip/Tuck in LA: Did You Like The Move?

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Drama, Prime Time, Cable, FX, Nip/Tuck, Editorial

Nip/TuckWhen Sean and Christian made the move to LA at the end of last season, I was a bit worried.  After several successful years in Miami, would this be the time when officially jumped the shark?  But after watching the Season 5 premiere, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the reinvigorated series.  A change in location was exactly what the show - and the viewers - needed.

For those who didn’t get to watch last night’s episode (or completely disagree with me altogether), let me tell you what I loved about the debut.

  • Sean and Christian, big names in Miami, now feel like a fish out of water in their new surroundings.  They will have to adjust their business and stale tactics accordingly.
  • Of course the residents of Miami were always obsessed with beauty, but now the doctors are able to exploit patients who must attain perfection in order to survive.  Moving gives them a whole new set of personalities and neuroses to play with.
  • But having said all that—there isn’t a person in town who hasn’t already had something worked on.  Not only will they have to compete with other established surgeons, they’ve got to find people who still need ‘help’.
  • It looks like LA’s obsession with perfection may have gotten to Christian—will he be able to keep up with everyone else?
  • With their new television consulting gig, the show is smartly tapping into the industry’s love of plastic surgeons/surgery shows (hence the existence of Nip/Tuck).  The actors now also get to be in on the joke.  Watching instruct on how to stage a realistic surgery scene was absolutely hilarious.  I kept wondering where Walsh’s consultant was standing.
  • Speaking of Bradley Cooper ()—wasn’t it great to see him as such a shallow jerk?  It reminded me of his delicious stint in Wedding Crashers.
  • And last but not least—it’s always awesome to see in any capacity.

So now that you’ve heard my reasons, let me know what you thought!
