No Spinoff for Gossip Girl

Yesterday, reports were spreading around the internet about a possible new drama for the . According to the buzz, Josh Schwartz’s show was already prepping itself for a spinoff. If you believed the word on the street, Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen) was the golden girl bound to her own gig.

Those who follow the GG books know Humphrey eventually winds up in a whole new series called The It Girl. Her character at some point elects to go to a new boarding school after a string of socially embarrassing moments.

But given Gossip Girl‘s own struggle to find an audience, I personally thought this decision to branch off seemed a bit hasty…and it turns out I wasn’t the only one.

Later in the day, the show’s own executive producer felt compelled to squelch the rumors. Josh Schwartz told E!, “Not sure how this got out there, but no plans for spinoff at this moment. The books do have a spinoff, but we have nothing in the works right now other than making sure season two gets off to a great start.”

Operative words, of course, being “At this moment.”  I’m guessing the CW is simply waiting to see how the whole experiment goes first before they officially devote all of its programming to teens.
