Project Runway: Season 4 fanatics will have to wait a few more weeks to find out which designer won the big prize. But people who saw the remaining contestants’ final runway shows on the last day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City say it should be well worth the wait.

The only spoiler provided in the Bryant Park tents Friday was who will serve as the season finale guest judge: Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham.

The 1000 or so fashionistas in the crowd are none the wiser on who the finalists actually are.  Since there are still two more episodes before the two-part season finale, all five remaining designers sent their collections down the runway. Two served as decoys to throw off the crowd. When the finale airs you’ll only see the three finalists’ collections.

Guest judge Victoria Beckham, a style icon known for making bold choices and setting major trends (i.e. the asymmetrical bob), said she saw a clear winner in the pack. Of the designer Beckham considers the best she says, “everything I saw I would wear myself”.

So what were the collections like? Insiders say the designers expanded on what they were already known for during Project Runway: Season 4.

Early favorite Rami Kashou apparently draped, draped then draped some more but in a somewhat unexpected way. His collection included what are described as softly layered skirts, draped blouses and “flawlessly” draped evening gowns.  The judges, particularly American designer Michael Kors and fashion director for Elle magazine Nina Garcia complained in past episodes that his draping, while beautifully executed, is not showing them anything new. Others contend his are the most commercial designs in the bunch.

The designer who stirred up the strongest feelings in fellow contestants and fans this season, Christian Siriano’s collection, was reportedly a solid mix of the haute couture and the highly wearable. Critics say the brash 21-year olds’ collection tracked similar themes at this year’s New York Fashion Week of understated luxury through the measured use of ruffles and feathers.

Ralph Lauren illustrator and resident perfectionist Jillian Lewis’ collection is described as a mix of immaculately tailored miniskirts, forward looking coats and unique cocktail dresses. Look for one surprising aspect to her collection: equestrian headdresses.

Fan Favorite Chris March presented a collection described as heavy on velvet, beading and brocade. One critic describes the collection as heavy and dated.  I think March’s many fans are just pleased the magnetic costume designer from San Francisco rode his second chance in the contest all the way to the final 5. March was eliminated then brought back after fellow contestant Jack Mackenroth had to drop out due to a health scare.

Finally, another fan favorite, Sweet “P” Vaughn’s collection reportedly picks up on two other Fashion Week trends: the mustard yellow and purple color palette and exposed zippers.

The winner of Project Runway: Season 4 gets $100,000, a car, a feature spread in Elle magazine and the opportunity to sell their collection on Bluefly.com.
