Secret Life Premieres Season 2
After a brief recap of season one, The Secret Life of the American Teenager showed Amy Juergens (Shailene Woodley) struggling to care for her newborn son while doing chores around the house and attending school. The teen mother is now living with just her mother Anne (played by Molly Ringwald), who will definitely be pregnant in this season. The actress was expecting twins before filming began, so there was no way to continue her story without including a new baby.
It was just serendipity that the second season of the show opened with the same theme as the first - pregnancy. But this time, it’s the mother and not the daughter who is expecting.
Younger sister Ashley (India Eisley) and dad George Juergens (Mark Derwin) are living in the house next door. Boyfriend Ben Boykewich (Kenny Baumann) has fallen into the familiar pattern of pacing his room and discussing Amy with his two best friends.
Ben’s father, the Sausage King Leo Boykewich (Steve Schirripa) is now dating Betty, the prostitute once hired by Grace’s mentally challenged brother Tom (Luke Zimmerman). Don’t worry, the plot begins to get more twisted from there.
Adrian’s mother and newly-separated father are rekindling an old spark. Ben’s jealousy of Ricky Underwood (Daren Kagasoff) is still affecting his relationship with Amy, resulting in argument between the two. Ricky and Adrian Lee (Francia Raisa) are still casually sleeping together, a fact which created a confrontation between her father Ruben (Phillip-Anthony Rodriguez) and the former.
Comedy moments - Leo borrowing condoms from son Ben, David confronting Anne (“Are you pregnant?” “Are you drunk?”) - made the premiere a success, but the usual plot twists and converging elements continued all the old familiar stories. The second season has picked up right where the first left off without missing a beat or changing a thing, and it’s got all the makings of success.
The end of the episode was marked by an exceptionally dramatic moment - not the loss of Grace Bowman’s virginity, but the death of her father (played in season one by John Schneider). It’s only going to get more intense from here.
