Whoopi Goldberg Makes Elizabeth Hasselbeck Cry
Regardless of whether you agree with the topic at hand, it’s always a great day on The View when a co-host ends up crying. It’s even better day when Elizabeth Hasselbeck is the one doing it.
On today’s show, things became quite tense between Elizabeth and Whoopi Goldberg during a discussion about the “N” word:

I watched the View today. I was shocked. I have never seen Whoopi get so upset. I do not support Elizabeth’s political views but I do agree with her about the N word. I will never understand why blacks would use this term in their own homes as an endearment, as Shirley said. I think Whoopi kept using it because she knew it would upset Elizabeth and she did it because Elizabeth would not accept her statement that they still live in different worlds. Just my take on it. Why do black people call each other the N word. But if we use it, it is offensive. Anybody?

Why do Niggers think they can use the word and whites cannot? The answer is simple. Whites have let them have special privledges for the last 60 years and they are used to it. Can you imagine that a nigger can say nigger but a white person can be fired or arrested for the same sound coming out of their mouth?
Please Nigger get over it. The pendulum will swing back!

OMG - Would somebody stuff a sock in Elizabeth Hasselbeck’s mouth! I quit watching the show because of her. Her “everybody picks on me, boo hoo” is too much for me to handle. I really wish the producers would dump her.....

Perhaps if people thought about this in the terms of family. When you are upset with your family, you may call them every name under the sun. But, if someone outside of your family did the same thing, your gut reaction is going to be to defend them. The way that I was able to come to terms with the use of this word, is I compared it to the word Bitch. I use Bitch all the time. I refer to myself as bitch constantly. I don’t call my friends bitch though… Wait, I take that back. I call a close male friend Bitch aaaall the time. lmao. But, honestly. Bitch is not a word that originated as a term of endearment. It means female dog for goodness sake! But it’s not uncommon at all to hear female friends call each Bitch… But, let a man call them a bitch and see what happens… I will say that I have notice that some guys refer to their girl as Bitch… affectionately. Which, uh, I don’t get. To me it would be like having a non black boyfriend calling me Nigger. I wouldn’t like that. lmao.

Whoopi-You don’t “own” any words. If it’s okay for you to use the “n” word then guess it’s okay for everyone else to! You should be fired! If any other talk show host had used the disgusting language you used, they would have been kicked to the curb just like Imus! Elizabeth has more class in her little finger than you have in your whole fugly self! Shame on you! Go back under that rock you crawled out of and take that nappy hair with you! Nappy, nappy, nappy! You don’t own that “n"word either!
Everyone is sick of the double standards, political correctness, whining, media butt kissing regarding blacks in this country! WE DON’T OWE YOU ANYTHING! We have given you this country on a silver platter and it’s not my fault you still can’t crawl out of the hood! Be accountable.
Obama will never win because too many Americans feel the same way I do and will never vote for him because of people like Whoopi and Jesse!

The truth is that most Blacks blame white people for the ills that befall them. As soon as Obama becomes President you will hear the “R” word. Reparations. Blacks will expect him to advance that issue. It is time for everyone to stop looking back and begin to look forward. Only when blacks become Americans and not African-Americans unless they were born in Africa will we put this racial mess behind us. I don’t refer to myself as French-American even though my Grandfather was from France. Stop the hatred and blame now.

I agree with most people on here. No one “owns” a word. It is racist to have one color of people able to use a word and one color of people cannot. Either everyone should be able to use it, or no one should be able to. The stigma is not nearly as potent when black people call white people honkey or cracker. White guilt is not helping this country at all! The civil rights movement was for equality between races and the word nigger is still causing segregation. White AND black people are responsible for that.

Per usual, white people don’t get it. Won’t get it. Don’t want to get it. And it’s all to hell with any opinion other than theirs. Just think about how ridiculous it is that you are up in arms over a word. One word out of the over 100 thousand words in the English language. Nigger is not the only one you will find that is offensive. You are free to use any word that you want to. However, if you decide to use a word that is widely offensive to a certain group of people, expect the backlash that is associated with it.
Not to mention I am curious as to why white people want to even use the word? Are you going to around calling each other Nigger then? Or is it that you want to refer to black people as niggers and the fact that you can’t do it in public, upsets you? There is no reason for you to even WANT to say the word.
link to this comment
And also, the people who are adding Obama to this… Comments like this is why many black people think that most white people are racists, as a whole. To think that even a minute percentage of blacks are sitting back waiting for reparations is pure ignorance.
What’s even more hilarious about this thought process is that if black people say that the white ran government favors white people, black people are told we are paranoid. That it is all in our heads. Yet, the moment a black person is a viable candidate for president, suddenly white people think that blacks are sitting here with our hands out looking for a handout? You can’t possibly be serious. Get over yourselves.
It’s this alone that drops the spotlight on the white privilege you undoubtedly have heard people speak on in the past. Just being white, makes you right in your mind and this is the primary reason that we will NEVER get past our race issues in this country. Because you do not care to acknowledge reality. Maybe it’s about time you’ve accept it.
I apologize for any typo’s.

c’mon. folks - who cares about the word “nigger” anyway? if people feel some negative emotions towards blacks and opt to use that word, fine by me. blacks have hostile words they use towards whites in the media *all the time* and no one says anything. asians have been in no. america for far less time than africans, yet they own businesses, do not fill our prisons, and get good grades. so, “white privilege” and racism/oppression cannot be blamed for the challenges facing the black community. they themselves are to blame, and this whining about being opporessed is just pure BS.

The whole point missed, in my opinion, is that a word, the N word is a symptom of an attitude on the part of the black culture. Their identity as victims of the white culture is something that the black culture clings to. They don’t know who they are as Americans if they are not African-Americans set apart by attitude, color and verbage. And a hyphen. It’s not even a separate but equal attitude. It is just separate. Something that I thought was abolished Constitutionally.
This nation is a melting pot. The black culture doesn’t seem to want to melt into the American culture. They seem puzzled that the white culture has accepted their homogeneousness by and large. Are we Americans, or are we hyphenated Americans? I think that was the point that Elizabeth Hasselbeck was trying to make.

Whoopie Goldberg should be fired from the view for using that word over and over. She is dispicable. The advertisers should insist on it as why would they want their brand reflecting such hate and racist arrogance as Whoopie displayed. She said that word with such contempt and in your face manner. It was like she was saying look here I can say anything I want because I am black and can club you white people over the head with this word and pc and there isn’t a damn thing you can do about it. Elisabeth Hasselbeck is more of a lady in her big toe than that sleezebag could ever hope to be.

Will somebody please explain to my 6 year old grandson why it is wrong for him to the N word when his black classmates are calling each other the N word and now Whoopi says its ok for black to use it. This happened at his school and he got into trouble and said he did not think it was bad because the other kids were using the N word to describe their friends. They are also his friends. From the mouths of innocents. No one has the right to use the N word to as a description whit or black, just as they should not use the B word.

I have to say that I agree with Elizabeth. I can’t stand her on so many levels but shes right.
The fact is that as long as this word is still used by anyone, then this word is going to be heard by everyone. You can’t choose who can say words and who can’t. You can’t choose who can hear words and who can’t.
If your white 12 year old hears this “n” word while listening to a black comic.. he is going to use it because it was funny when the other guy said it. So then he gets in trouble. So what do you tell him “well son 100s of years ago white people who are long and dead used black people as slaves. After that people who were taught the wrong things and who were just wrong in their way of thinking made it really hard on black people and used to call them this word. Even though you were raised right adn you respect black people as just another human being.. you can’t say that word. They like to say it but you cant ever say it. They get to have this word and say it all they want so that they feel they have something on you. “
I mean isn’t that what it comes down too. We can say it because your granddaddy shitted on my granddaddy. You cant ever say it or you are a racist and a bad person.
I mean just stop using the word or let everyone use it and you take away the importance and its just another word!!!

Right on, Dee Dee!
What people fail to realize is that there is no other word that you can call Black people from Florida to France or Spain to Soweto that will anger them like the “n word”.
Non-Black people don’t understand because there is NO universal insult for them. It’s that simple.
Call a Black Frenchman a “n - word” and see how fast he goes off on you.....
And please don’t talk about something dead white people did over 400 years ago because while slavery is over the “n-word” still remains…
And I don’t hear white folks running around saying “What’s up, my polack!!!” or “Somebody called me the W word today!!!”

I don’t know how true those tears of Elisabeth’s were, because she quickly dried them up. Don’t be had by her little sob, because it wasn’t real.

DeeDee- The way you are referring to “white people” by saying you all shows that maybe you are racist. Everyone is different and has a different opinion regardless of their color. Don’t say that all white people are racist, some are, but some aren’t. Just like some black people hate white people, and some don’t.
Whoopie was the one getting all upset over “one word.” Elizabeth was just saying basically if you don’t want people to use the word, don’t use it yourself. What’s the BIG deal???

Whoopi says they can use the N work anyway they want to but gets upset if we use it anyway we want to. As usual there’s a double standard. Go back into your hole and take Barbara Walters with you. What makes you two think anything you say is worth listening to. I don’t watch your show and never will. I saw it on AOL news.

the word whore means the same if a black person says it or a white person says it and the sames goes for the n word .Blacks need to get over slavery issue because they get mor e perks than white.their men don’t marry clhildrens mom just so uncle sam pays for college.

Whites cannot use the n-word, but its okay that blacks can, what????
I am sooo confused.....
Is an asian person allowed to use this word? How about native americans? I mean give me a break!!! Elisabeth is right, it should be about the children PERIOD!!! Telling 6 yr old caucasian Suzy Q that the N-word is a bad word, never use it, but turning around and telling 7 yr old black Shaniqua that she can use it??? Doesn’t make sense to me....I am confused.

It’s obvious that certain blacks and whites like to still use the “N” word. it’s wrong, its nasty and hurtful, and simply wrong… Some blacks like having the power of using that word. It makes them feel good to use a word that whites are forbidden to use. Well I got news for you whoopi and Shirley and Jessie. you sound disgusting, and nasty when you do that. When I heard it from you, I looked at you three with a whole new view of disgust. It is sickening that you three popular people keep this nasty word alive and give it so much power. You’re really just hypocrites. You don’t stand for anything except division.
And moreover, you use it as a battle tool against whites. You’re saying “I can, but you can’t” and you know what whoopi, Shirley and Jessie? If you can use it, so can I…There ain’t no law against it, so if you can, I can… I probably won’t, not because of any fear of you and certainly not because of any R.E.S.P.E.CT. FOR YOU, cause I lost all respect for you this morning watching you and Shirley and Jessie this past week, but because calling names is disgusting. and you showed you’re disgust on national TV….And you Ms. Walters, grow you some balls and fire Whoopi and Shirley…They are no better than Imus. .When she said to you, “ I don’t want to hear it come out of your mouth” you should have reminded her that you didn’t want to hear it come out of her mouth either and that it is still your show.

Whoopi makes me sick...I’m sick of people playing the race card, it is such a double standard. I am so far from racist, and never use the word any way, but the way she spoke was like she as an african-american- has entitlement, and that’s just the problem. You all have a sense of entitelment. You are not better than us, we are not better than you. we are all human. If you have a problem with the way you are treated, stop speaking ebonics, pull up your pants, stop the violence, get a job, use birth control, change the statistics! Make your ancestors proud, not ashamed. They fought so hard for equality and this is how you pay them back. Using that word towards each other is beyond disrespectful to those who fought for you. If you’re so proud of being AFRICAN american, and not JUST american, go back to africa, i’ve been there plenty of times, it isn’t pretty and you wouldn’t last a minute. Whoopi- Shut up, you are just proving your ignorence and taking your race back a few steps. Jesse- get over yourself, you are demoting something we should all be proud of, that we as a country have reached a point of equality that we have had a female, and AFRICAN american presidential candidates.

Y’know, I can’t stand her, but they treated her like #### yesterday. Even Barbara Walter’s contempt for her rose to the top.

I’m so sick of all of this. Change can not be brought into action if the black community is unwilling to change. Either the word is acceptable to everyone, or its acceptable to no one. It seems to me that some of the values being practiced by african americans are only working toward segregation, not equality. Freedom of speech is a luxury that they get, however caucasions are not extended that same luxury??? What kind of world is this? There are television channels devoted to the black community. BET, Black Stars. In my college there were special clubs and societies devoted to woman of the black race. It seems to me that they want seclusion and exclusivity. They seem to want special rights and standards that are not extended to the white community. I’ve been in a situation several time in which a black person was verbally bashing white people right in front of me. But I am not allowed to defend myself as they would if the situation is reversed. They can call me “white girl” and “cracker” and a number of other inappropriate terms, but I’m not allowed to use a word that they themselves let freely slide from their mouths. Equality can only be possible if they allow it to be. Special rules and rights for black americans will not help to make things right in this country. There is only one word for what this is. Oppression. There is some warped power trip going on here. They are silencing white people because they are being taught that they can. But its wrong and it needs to stop. I am not a recist person. I am very accepting of any person with a good heart and honest intentions. But these double standards have gone on long enough.

As a black person in America, I want to believe attitudes are changing. But after reading the comments posted on here, I can’t believe those of you claiming that black people are full of BS, and that we’re lazy, waiting for hand outs, and playing the race card, and that we’re the ones with perks.
I know these are not the opinions of all white people, and hopefully this only expresses the minority of white people’s thoughts. However, most of you who posted on this website, are stupid, ignorant fools.

Little children are the voice of reason and honesty in this country. What will I tell my daughter when she goes to school and asks what that word means and why she can’t use it? Or worse, what if she hears it, so automatically assumes its acceptable, says it, and gets in trouble? This is how I know how serious this problem has become. Its coming down to what we are teaching our children. The fact that I will have to have this conversation with her someday makes me sick. The fact that I have to tell her to stifle her words because her and her black peers do not share the same rights and standards is disgusting to me. Our kids will watch and see the black history months, the negro collge funds, the black t.v. channels and discover that somewhere along the line in the search for equality, power and righteousnous got displaced. We are raising our children to beleive that they ARE different, not the same. They will see that its not just enough for us all to be Americans. And that somehow the rules that apply to one child, do not apply to another of a different race. This is just the tip of the iceburg, and it will get worse very fast.

I have NEVER been so disappointed in human beings!!! I have yet to watch the video clip, but just reading the closed minded comments on the topic sadden me. People need to stop being so defensive...relax and stop taking everything so personally. I am white and am SO proud to be white, but am very active in the black community. To say that black people want this and want that, and continue to ask/expect special priviliges is absurd. Why would any white person WANT to use the N word? Why is it offensive to you to be asked NOT to use it? Same thing with the F word with homosexuals.....why??? If you, as a human being, know something is offensive to someone WHY do you NEED to use that word? I would LOVE to know if ANY of the people who made these narrow minded comments have ever walked into a housing authority project building, an inner city school with no books, broken windows and no school yard-I have. Have you ever seen a 1st grader getting their hair pulled by a COP for not crossing the street fast enough-I have. Racism exists in this country, and words do hurt....why continue the resentment and hate? Be a positive person and say/think positive things to everyone no matter what color they are. Where are we headed as a country if we continue fighting with each other??

This blog is a prime example of the stereotypes that exist in AMERICA, as well as the world! This saddens me to see that such generalizations about different groups of people are thought as being true and justified and that those have no shame in doing so. The issue is that the word is a defensive and harsh word and it should not be used by anyone to describe someone, but just because others use that word does not justify the use by others. There are various words that are used that parts of that group find it defensive, i.e. white trash, nigger, or wet back. Some of these words used various ethnic groups to describe themselves is seen as defensive if said towards them by others. I think that is the issue, that these words that are being used to describe people/groups is as a means of slander or insult that group. There is power in words and people should be aware of the words that they use and the meaning that they are trying to convey.

I love reading and hearing - from Blacks and uninformed Whites and Jews - about how Whites have never ,ever had it as hard and bad ,as any other races - specifically,Blacks, since that’s always THE race that’s used for comparison - that we’ve never been oppressed by a colonial power, and ,especially never been enslaved and endured the same horrors.
It is long overdue to inform Black racists and Guilt-Ridden Whites about
1) The North African MUSLIM Moors that ivaded, and ruled,Spain for 800 years, during which hundreds of thousands, possibly millions of Whites, were shipped to North Africa to be slaves and concubines. And most of those who were able to escape, didn’t make it back alive. And
2) The Ottoman Empire.
3) Ghengis Khan and The Mongols
4) Attila/ the Huns
In short, Whitey has NOTHING to apologize for.

The word ancestors is being used like this was hundreds and hundreds of years ago. Whoopi’s mother wasn’t able to vote. My black friend’s father ran home from his friend’s house so he didn’t get beat up, living in the south. Water fountains and HOSPITALS were segregated. You tell me how you’d feel if your own mother was denied the right to vote or your dad, big, strong and proud, had to run home because he knew he’d be easily out numbered and nearly beaten to death for walking home. This all makes it a bit more personal. Racism as severe as it was in the 60s is not as rampant as it was but the pain is still there and it cannot be ignored. We cannot tell our friends to just look the other way or ‘get over it because slavery didn’t happen in our world today’. It is very much a part of our world today. This happened to their parents for crying out loud –people that we interact with on a daily basis. The people who did the lynching are still around too. What would I do if I knew or suspected who attacked my father? Ignore his wrongdoings and treat him as an equal? I think not. This is something that we all have to deal with and be respectful of. We, as a nation, are still healing. Hurtful words will be said by comedians all the time - it is up to you if you want to repeat them.
and who ever that was who said Obama was thinking about reparations. Seriously. if you are voting based on things the candidates haven’t said or have even eluded to - then you might want to think twice about voting for the other candidates! I could come up with some pretty seemingly ridiculous platforms for them too!

I’m reading through the comments myself and I’m glad everyone can give opposite sides of views over their rights. But, you need to sit back and listen to yourselves. WE are WE. Why divide over a word? I can shed some light on the subject, if you’d like. It all started with the word being ‘banned’ by .....guess who? Everyone agreed. I say EVERYONE! All of a sudden, someone came along with the brilliant statement that it was now ‘OK’ to use, because it was being used by the person that protested it, in the first place!! If everyone would’ve left it alone, it wouldn’t NOW be a problem. So, how does anyone figure that ONE side ownes it, never mind say it at all??? I remember years ago, when the word re-entered the population, and the excuses for using it and NO ONE argued, because of fear of causing problems. If it was stopped at that point, this would not be an issue right now!!!

I am a 58 year old white male and I don’t understand why the black race can use the “N” word and the white race can’t. I don’t particularly want to use the word but I don;t like to be told I can’t.
White people have been and are called many names by the black race, examples; “Cracker, Whitey, Honkey, and that is just a sample. If I can be called those words then why can’t I use the N word to describe a black person?
Black people have been give a program by the government called “affimative action” which helps them go to the front of the line in the job market and I see that as racist against whites. Black people can get a job through affirmative action simply because of their race and not because of their qualifications for the job. I see that as reverse racism against whites.
I have never owned a slave. My ancestors may have; but why should I be held accountable for what my acestors did?
The black race have things available to them or named after them that the white race doesnt’ and here are examples, United Negro College Fund, a black TV network BET, and the NAACP just to name a few and I am sure there are more.
I think that the entire black race would be up in arms tomorrow if the white race suddenly decided that they wanted to start a United White People College Fund, a TV network known as the White Entertainment Network or (WET), or the NAAWP (National Asscociation for the Advancement of White People).
There has become a double standard in this country that favors the black race.

Black people and white people are not on equal footing. Blacks don’t have the privileges whites do. The majority of blacks come from poorer families, less educated upbringings, neighborhoods with higher crime rates, etc. They live in different worlds and I think that was the point Whoopi was making. Yes, we’re all human and we’re Americans, but we aren’t all treated the same in society and we don’t all get the same benefits or the same luxuries. That’s just the hard truth.
Why is that? Because blacks are the minority, whites are the majority. The institutions that we all rely on, schools, health care, government, were all built by and run by white leadership. It’s embedded in the fabric of society that the white person will get more and better than the black person. Do you think blacks have ever had an equal share in society or equal representation when it’s taken this long to get a viable black candidate for president?
And because of that, is it so hard to understand why we have a Black History Month and not a White History Month, or a BET instead of a WET? Because it’s taken this long for society to realize blacks are worthy of recognition, worthy of things that celebrate who they are.
If blacks want to use the “N” word, that’s fine by me. If anything, it turns a vulgarity around and throws it in the face of the people who’ve used that word in a hateful way.
And Elisabeth Hasselback only started crying once she started stumbling over her words, meaning she ran out of excuses to back her claims and resorted to tears instead.

What’s funny to me is a white person telling blacks to “get over it”. Well, that’s just what we did. Got over it. A term that was the ultimate insult has been turned into a term of endearment amongst some blacks and even other minority races.... that did not include whites if you’ll carefully read. So yes, if you’re white and you say nigger, you run the risk of getting a foot dead in yourass. Sorry we took racist white folk’s favorite word and turned it into something good, but that’s what blacks have been doing forever. Taking junk from white racists and “getting over it”. Now YOU GET OVER IT.

Furthermore, I’m so glad this happened because Hasselbeck represents the white person that has the nerve to think that everything is equal and the only way to wake a person like that up is hitting them upside their f-ing head with reality, just like Whoopi did. Hasselbeck is a joke and represents the joke mindset that just because it’s 2008 racism doesn’t exist. I almost feel sorry for her… almost.

In addition, just to give an example from the recent news:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/07/16/civilrights.killing/index.html
We’re still not done prosecuting white people for civil rights killings in the ‘60s. More than 40 years later and not a single person charged?
“Last year, the Justice Department made investigating about 100 civil rights era killings ... a priority after urging from the Urban League, the NAACP, the Southern Poverty Law Center and other groups. “
Sure, we’re all equal.

Elizabeth is right.
This argument is so tiresome. Why don’t folks get it?! At what point did “nigga” become a term of endearment. Slavery has really had long lasting effects, but none more damaging than psychologically. What is so difficult to understand?! White slave owner demeans black slave by calling them nigger. He does everything inhumanly possible to that nigger to show that he’s a nigger. Anyone heard of Stockholm Syndrome? That’s when a hostage begins to show signs of loyalty to the hostage taker. Let’s call this the Nigger Syndrome.
Some slaves began to picture themselves as niggers and other slaves as well…Massa’ was right…you juss a dum nigga! Fast forward through the years and we have the same thing. Let’s be real. Everything else is so fake in this world, at least we can be real with ourselves. Nigga isn’t a term of endearment. Nigga is when your tongue is too lazy to say Nigger. As in…the word is door…you say doe…floor..flo’…and any other English word that becomes “ebonics”.
Take it out the hands of the oppressor and do what Whoopee…oppress each other? Terms of endearment…nigga please, bitch nigga, that nigga (baby’s father) ain’t ####, nigga break yo self, etc. Anyone ever notice that nigga is primarily used in reference to black males. Females, well y’all just black bitches.
Be honest people, we have become mentally strapped to being inferior and not trusting each other. Don’t believe me…how about light skin vs dark skin…talking white vs talking black…kinky hair vs straight hair. Fact is, the majority of the time you hear nigga…it ain’t good. Folks are so messed up in the head, they don’t know the difference. I grew up saying nigga all the time because that is what my environment taught me to appreciate my history. Folks really think they doing something calling folks nigga out of love. Please, stop using that tired excuse to use the word because you don’t want to stop using the word.

Whoopie Goldberg showed what a low class racist pig that she really is. To take a word and use it over and over with such glee, such arrogance, pride and with the “in the face manner” that she did to Elizabeth Hasselbeck , she should be fired, just like Imus was. Whoopie and Jesse Jackson are both such hypocrites, they are to be shunned and nobody should listen to anything that comes out of either of their filthy dispicible mouths.

I dont agree with Elizabeth when she compared being called a “pollok” to calling black people the “n” word. The word pollok does not trace back to many many years ago as being a way to degrade a certain race. There is so much history behind the “n” word. Elizabeth just needs stay in her little world where she is nieve and believes all races are treated equal. Of course she believes that as white woman who probably has never been discriminated against. You will never hear a minority whether its black, spanish, or other groups of color, say that we are living in the same world. I personally don think it should be used by anyone but we live in a society where racism still exist and isn going anywhere. Until then, the “n” word will still exist. Hopefully if Obama becomes president, we as a society will realize that racism is very unnecessary in todays world when we can be focusing onl impartant things such as bringing home the troops.

Carrie, I never said that all white people are racists. I said this is why SOME black people feel as if white people as a whole are racists I never said that I was one of those black people.
The reality of that word is that it i a slur in the mouths of white people because there is no reason to have to use it. There was never a point in American history where white people referred to black people a Niggers as a term of endearment. Black people calling each other Nigga’s as the remnants of slavery. It’s fucked up and I personally don’t call anyone I know Nigga. The only time you will even hear me say it is if I am having a discussion about the word in and of itself.
If a white person decides to say Nigger when they are DISCUSSING the word in a debate-like atmosphere, I PERSONALLY don’t have a problem with it. At the same time, many black people do. When someone black calls another black person a Nigga, they know that they aren’t using it in a demeaning way. However, a white person calling a black person a Nigger is demeaning, and it is meant to dehumanize.
In the end, this is not really a big issue. The bigger issues is the inequality that is shown to blacks and other minorities across this country, in terms of government. THAT’S the real issue, but we will never get to it because (some) white people are too busy trying to tell black people what words they can and can’t use as a term of endearment.

We the people of these United States have made a few mistakes, there are still substantial scars that serve as reminders of these. I firmly believe that Martin Luther King’s Dream was for all of us.
I remember when my son had moved to a new school and he had to fill out a form to determine his race. After looking at the choices, he check other and wrote in; “Human”.

Just when I was leaning toward Obama, up pops Whoopie saying that Obama and I live in different worlds. Well I want to vote for someone from my world. By the way, anybody have a current list of the sponsors of The View? I need to change my shopping habits.

Here we go again. Whites just refuse to aknowledge anything that means anything especially when it comes to racism in the good old USA. Why can’t whites use this word???? Because this is a word that was passed down from white generation to white generation to use against blacks to always remind them that nothing has changed in america since the slaves arived in this contry in the 1700’s. And that is a sad thing to come to terms with especialy since I am African America.
I use this word occasionaly and I have heard other blacks use it and I can tell you it has an entirerly differnt meaning than when used by whites.
I wish I could say that that blockhead Jesse Jackson caused me harm when he said the word unknowingly on FOX news, but he didn’t. As a matter of fact I could care less about anything he has to say because when he or another black says this word it will never mean what whites intended for it to mean when they created it to be used as a hate term to refer to blacks so many centeries ago.
I live in a very rasist town in the midwest and have heard whites use this term, and my mother comutes to work to a town smaller than ours and has to go through 8 hrs. 5 days a week of being called a Nigger, Black Nigger, or Black bitch by the racist whites in the plant all the time.
So I could really care less about a black person saying Nigga because the more inportant issue is THE WHITES THAT CALL BLCAK PEOPLE NIGGER TO THEIR FACE.
But I bet no one whould dare address that issue black or white.
And for the record we do live in two different worlds because I HAVE NEVER come in contact with a white person that had had to endure what me and my mom has to endure everyday.

Wow, whoppi was right. How do we get to reparations and nobody owes us anything to N word and that blacks are lucky whites are nice to them. Guess what, we all owe each other as citizens, respect. Not love or like, but plain respect to live our lives without predjudice or prejudement. There are not just two different worlds, there are many. Dont be Naive, we are all american but our cultural experiences make us different, for good worse or indifferent and and that is just how it is. A white irish catholic lives differently than an israeli born jew, and black africans do not necessarily understand the world of black african americans. So stop generalizing that every black persons opinion belongs to every other black person. All u are doing is validating separation Granny. Does David Duke or Imus speak for you? Its like black people thinking that all whites are racist. Even though some here clearly are. Too much anger here. There are lots of words that have that double edged sword effect. Bitch being one of them. Redneck. Rednecks love calling themselves that, but Id bet theyd punch a yuppie in the face on a street corner for calling them that. Common sense people. Some things just arent done and guess what.Jesse was wrong too! No matter who he was talking to since he gave a press conference to stop using the word. It was Just plain hypocritical!!!! Ask a hard working muslim in America who has never comitted a crime in their life and have the same dreams for their kids if we are living in the same world when they turn on the news or go to the airport to get on a plane? A little more tolerance could go a long way. WE dont have to understand every little thing about each other. IF you have 3 kids and one comes out blonde, the other brunette and the last a redhead, would you love one less? Can we just accept that we are different and realize its OK? The differences make the world an interesting place.

Janice,
There are more white people on public assistance than blacks, also why do black people still get sentenced to heftier punishments in court that their white counterparts? Why did we find in the latest mortgage scandal that although many black people who had excellent credit and were eligible for prime loans, were still being steered towards sub-prime rates?
The n-word is not about entitlement. If you call me a nigger behind my back it will never hurt me.Call me one to my face and there will likely be a fight. THink of it as porn it should be done at home with the door closed, when the kids arent around. Its sort of a like a curse word. I dont think any kids should be running around saying it.
RACISM exists...stereotyping=racist.
Definition of Racial discrimination:
Racial discrimination differentiates between individuals on the basis of real and perceived racial differences. Can we stop? Why do so many people in here think that every black person is on welfare? and prefer handouts to getting it for ourselves?

My thoughts are this; Elizebeth needs to shut her mouth !!
She is so busy trying to BE white and correct but, can’t see a tree threw a forest. If I want to use the “N” word or any other word. I will and can! She can’t because she “IS” one of the main reasons Black people HATE Whites. She thinks she is better than everyone. Whoopi like Rosie HAS an opinion. Whoopi UNlike Rosie knows how to be a “PERSON in the public eye” And lives her public life the same as her private life!
I used this to explain the “rant” like this to a (white) mother friend of mine. You (the mom friend) has called her own daughter, a whore, slut, coke head, etc. And the daughter is all of those, w/o question! Once I was making referance to the daughter and said, “Your whore/slut daughter ....blah blah blah” And my friend got mad at me for useing the same words to describe her daughter. While I understand Blacks can use it ( “N” word) but, others can’t. It’s because WE earned the right to do so !!
I’ll add; I could just see in my mind, Elizebth sitting there “thinking” Whoopi you “nigger” why are you pushing my buttons to pressure me on “our” show !
Just my thoughts!

I think Whoopi was correct. By taking back the word, you take it back and use it the way you want to use it. We are currently doing the same thing with our comedy in NYC, the “feminazi” (the n-word for women). By taking back this derogatory term used against women, we render it powerless.
