Will Richard Hatch Survive in the Supreme Court?

The first reality TV-made millionaire, Survivor Richard Hatch, is prepared to take his tax evasion case all the way to the Supreme Court…but that doesn’t mean the highest body of lawmakers in the land will have anything to do with him.

Richard Hatch was convicted in 2006 of the same crime which took down mob kingpin Al Capone - income tax evasion. Hatch was sentenced to serve four years in prison for failure to pay a portion of the $1 million prize he received from winning Survivor. But Hatch isn’t going to go quietly.

The quasi-TV star and his attorney have appealed the ruling with the Supreme Court because they claim Hatch was not given the opportunity to fully testify in his own defense, and also that a witness for the prosecution (an accountant) was not thoroughly cross-examined by the defense. Hatch claims that he spoke with the producers of the show during taping and was told that his taxes would be paid, so long as he didn’t blow the whistle on cheating which was occurring. CBS denies these claims.

The United States Supreme Court takes a small fraction of the appeals it routinely receives. In the midst of all this legal trouble, Richard Hatch is also penning a book about the American legal system and his experiences therein.
