Primetime Emmy Nominations Nod at Several Shows

EmmyThe 59th annual Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced, giving the biggest honors (17 nominations) to ’s Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. AMC’s Broken Trail just missed the top slot with 16 nominations. After a review of the best comedy, drama, reality, and variety series of the year, a look at the TV movies and mini-series, the die has been cast. Many were nominated, but few will win. Boston Legal, , , , and were nominated for Outstanding Dramatic Series, HBO’s Sopranos coming away with the highest number of nods. For Outstanding Comedy Series, Ugly Betty stood out with the most nominations, trailed by , , 30 Rock, and Two and a Half Men.

For Outstanding Reality Series, , , Project Runway, , and The Amazing Race (quite amazingly) all received nominations. Broken Trail, Prime Suspect: The Final Act (Masterpiece Theatre), and The Starter Wife all took honors for Outstanding Miniseries. Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, Inside the Twin Towers, Longford, The Ron Clark Story, and Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy are all in the running for Outstanding TV-Movie.

Members of the Colbert Nation will be elated to know that The Colbert Report and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart are both in the running for Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Series. Other nominees in the category give the two Comedy Central shows fairly stiff competition; Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Late Show with David Letterman, and Real Time with Bill Mahr round out the rest of the nominations. Personally, I’d like to see Colbert win, but only because I think he’s quite hilarious.

The dramas, comedies, reality shows, mini-series, TV-movies, and anything else we might have watched have all been named, but only a select few will claim the Emmy as their own. Who will win the honors? The answer won’t be revealed until September, giving nominees plenty of time to stew over the thought, and giving viewers plenty of time to tune into the ones who got the nods - and find out, for themselves, if the Emmys made the right choice.
