A Thursday night football game - coupled with John McCain’s RNC speech - gave NBC an easy win in both categories last night.

John McCain and Barack Obama

Both sides have met, looked over their schedules, and finally come to a conclusion. That’s right, America’s two greatest political parties have at long last worked together to reach a decision: after weeks and weeks, they’ve finally agreed to a schedule for the Presidential and Vice Presidential debates.

The interrogation begins in September. The 26th of the month, to be precise, the first Presidential debate will take place in Oxford, Mississippi at the University of Mississippi. You can view the arguments on PBS, as the event will be moderated by Jim Lehrer (The NewsHour). The time is scheduled for talk on foreign policy and national security, i.e. the war in Iraq.

October 2 will see the Vice Presidential debates, which I fully expect will score record this year. This takes place in St. Louis, Missouri at Washington University and can also be viewed on PBS. The moderator is Gwen Ifill, also of The NewsHour.

Unfortunately for CW, good luck did not come in threes.  Despite impressive debuts for Gossip Girl and 90210, the 11th cycle of America’s Next Top Model failed to impress. (In the show’s defense, it was pitted against stiff competition.) ANTM‘s performance gave FOX the chance to take over in the viewers and the demos.

So far early premiere dates have helped out the CW. The network followed up Monday’s Gossip Girl numbers with a record turnout for 90210. In the end, CW was the winner with the demos while NBC was on top with the viewers.

  • * (8 million, 1.6/4) improved by 700,000.
  • A * block (2.4/6) pulled in 6.4 million.
  • * (5.9 million, 2.1/6) had a 600,000 slump.
  • ’s premiere (4.9 million, 2.6/7) had the best demos for any scripted CW show ever.

Fans tired of summer repeats eagerly welcomed Monday night’s premieres. CW had an impressive comeback while FOX was last night’s winner in the demos. This left NBC and its million dollar suitcases as the victor with the viewers.

Chances are if you air anything semi-original on Sundays, you’ll come out on top. Last night, Big Brother helped CBS with the viewers while a Nicolas Cage film boosted NBC in the demos.

Although it was a close race, FOX managed to pass CBS with the viewers on Friday. The Eye network, though, did tie FOX and CW in the demos.

Raising the Bar

(You can view TV Envy’s Fall Television Programming Schedule here.)

MONDAY (9/1)
Labor Day Marathons: The Closer (TNT), Beverly Hills, 90210 (SOAPnet), Scrubs (TV Land), Dirty Jobs (Discovery), My Wife and Kids (ABC Family), Star Trek: The Next Generation (Sci Fi), House of Payne (TBS), CSI (Spike TV), Anthony Bourdain (Travel), That ‘70s Show (FX)

  • Gossip Girl (CW, 8pm):  Season 2 premiere. “Summer in the Hamptons winds down as Serena and Nate carry on a cover-up scheme to make others think they’re dating.” A few choice pics sent to Gossip Girl should do the trick.
  • Prison Break (FOX, 8pm):  Season 4 premiere. “Michael is in LA looking to even the score with Gretchen for Sara’s death.” I think Gretchen should really apologize for all of last season.
  • One Tree Hill (CW, 9pm):  Season 6 premiere. “Lucas’ chosen lady meets him at the airport, while Dan’s accident proves life-threatening.” Sorry. So not caring who picks these days.
  • Raising the Bar (TNT, 10pm):  Series premiere. “Idealistic public defender Jerry Kellerman (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) fights for a man he’s sure is innocent, but holding a court is a judge who loathes Kellerman.” Gosselaar’s new hair has been generating some passionate opinions.

Last night, Big Brother showed surprising strength given its age. (Then again, the fall season really hasn’t kicked in.) The reality show coupled with the always reliable CSI gave CBS a win with the viewers. Meanwhile, a new episode of The Moment of Truth helped FOX with the demos.
