Sunday Ratings: AMAs Strike a Chord for ABC

Wins for Michael Jackson, a fall from Jennifer Lopez and a kiss from Adam Lambert combined for one of the best-rated AMAs in some time. The 2009 event had its largest audience in seven years and its highest demo in five.

8pm

• The Sunday Night Football game (15.1 million, 5.6/14 in 18-49) was still the most-watched program of he night.
• The 2009 American Music Awards (5.5/14) got 14.2 million talking around the water cooler.
• The Amazing Race (11.7 million, 3.5/8) was on par with last week.
• The Simpsons (7 million, 3.3/8) lost 2 million; The Cleveland Show (6.5 million, 3.3/8) was off by 500,000.

Sunday Ratings: Three Rivers Goes Upstream

Is Alex O’Loughlin headed for another CBS cancellation, or will the former Moonlight star live to see another season? The answer might not be so clear right now. Last night’s Three Rivers with guest star Mandy Patinkin reached its best demos to date.

8pm

• Approximately 19.1 million watched the Colts beat the Patriots on Sunday Night Football (7.5/18 in 18-49).
• Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (11.6 million, 3.6/9) nailed down 1.2 million more.
• The Amazing Race (11.6 million, 3.2/8) added on 1.1 million.
• The Simpsons (9 million, 4.2/10) did 1.6 million better than last week’s Family Guy; The Cleveland Show (7 million, 3.3/8) hit a demo low.

VIDEO: Family Guy Spoofs Empire Strikes Back

Hollywood’s love of sequels has hit television.

Now that two years have passed, it’s finally time for the Family Guy to debut the next installment in their Star Wars trilogy. Unfortunately, those looking for it will have to their local store—at least for now.

In an effort to maximize profits, FOX has decided to deliver its Empire Strikes Back parody on DVD before airing it on television. They’ve also chosen December 22 as the release date. I’d say it’s beginning to smell a lot like Christmas.

Family Guy’s Not So Live Comedy Show on FOX

Going sans Simpsons for the night, FOX gave their entire Sunday night line-up to Seth MacFarlane, creator and main voice talent of Family Guy. Two brand-new episodes of the series, a fresh installment of the spin-off and a half-hour special featuring the man himself took up every last moment of the prime time bloc.

Could this be the dawn of a new, MacFarlane-driven era on FOX? Will Family Guy programming, and related shows, soon take up all of Sunday night?

Sunday Ratings: NBC Thanking the Cowboys

Now that baseball is finally over, it’s time to get back to the gridiron. Last night’s game between the Dallas Cowboy and the Philadelphia Eagles gave NBC something it hasn’t seen in a while: wins in both the viewers and the demos.

8pm

• Yesterday’s Sunday Night Football game (19.8 million, 7.6/19 in 18-49) hit a season-high rating.
• The Amazing Race (10.5 million, 3.1/8) was off by 600,000.
• Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (10.4 million, 3.0/7) lost 400,000.
• Family Guy (3.7/9) kicked off the evening with 7.4 million; Family Guy Presents: Seth & Alex’s Almost Live Comedy Show (3.4/8) attracted 6.6 million.

• Two and a Half Men (CBS, 9pm):  “Charlie and Alan wake up together…with a woman they don’t recognize.” Strange, but significantly less awkward than two and a half men.
• CSI: Miami (CBS, 10pm):  “Ray Langston of the Las Vegas crime lab arrives in Miami to investigate after a severed leg found in the Everglades is discovered to belong to a girl who disappeared in Las Vegas a week earlier.” Horatio + Morpheus = sunglasses showdown.
• Little People, Big World (TLC, 10pm):  “Jake gets his own cell phone for his 12th birthday, and before long he racks up an outrageous bill, making Matt and Amy question whether he s ready for the responsibility.” The Learning Channel is not known for highlighting responsibility—in pre-teens or fathers of eight.

Microsoft Pulls Out of Family Guy Special

Apparently there are things Microsoft won’t do to promote Windows 7.

The software corporation recently announced that it has severed ties from a FOX event it was set to exclusively sponsor. Family Guy Presents: Seth & Alex’s Almost Live Comedy Show, a special airing next month, would have incorporated bits about the company’s new product in lieu of traditional commercials. Unfortunately, the execs had a change of heart after watching a taping earlier this month.

Although animated portions of the variety special reportedly cover controversial subjects like incest, feminine hygiene and the Holocaust, those segments were supposedly in line with a typical Family Guy episode. It’s the live segments Seth MacFarlane and Alex Borstein (Lois Griffin) taped before an audience that may have been considered questionable.

Family Guy Spin-off Gets Second Season

After only a handful of episodes, FOX is pleased enough with The Cleveland Show to order a complete second season. (Only 13 episodes beyond this year had been previously ordered.)

Honestly, I’ve no idea why. The spin-off lacks a lot of the hilarity Family Guy brings to the table weekly, and I just cannot get over that German bear. Ridiculous is one thing. Outlandish is quite another.

Family Guy Subject of Corn Maze

Family Guy may not have won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, but it has been given a different type of honor.

For a short period of time, those in the Massachusetts area can navigate a corn maze dedicated to the show. The seven-acre creation, which was approved by the network, is located on Connors Farm in Danvers.
