Shannen Doherty and Others to Guest Host on The View
Posted by Abby Rose Dalto Categories: Daytime, Reality, Talk Shows, ABC, Cable, American Idol, Gossip
After the loss of Meredith Viera and the “gain” of losing Star Jones Reynolds, The View will feature a series of guest hosts for the next few weeks.
Some of the upcoming guests will include American Idol finalist Katharine McPhee (July 19), and Carrie Ann Inaba of Dancing with the Stars (July 10). All My Children‘s Susan Lucci appeared yesterday, while singer-actress Brandy (of Moesha and America’s Got Talent) guest hosted today and Wednesday July 5.
Perhaps the most highly anticipated appearance - in my humble opinion only, I’m sure - is that of Shannen Doherty. Doherty, known for her starring roles in (and allegedly bitter departures from) Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed, is sheduled to guest host July 31 and August 1.
The actress, infamous as being “trouble” due to rumors of stormy relationships with cast members and a shortlived marriage to Ashley Hamilton, is unlikely to be considered as a permanent replacement though. Her new reality show Breaking Up With Shannen Doherty, in which she will help people get out of toxic relationships, premieres August 1 on Oxygen.
The View won’t be making a permanent replacement until after Rosie O’Donnell’s debut on September 5. (The show will be on a month-long hiatus before that starting August 4).
Meanwhile, no one is quite sure what Reynolds is up to. She posted details on how to contact Barbara Walters, the president of ABC Daytime, and an executive producer of The View on her website recently. However, as of this Thursday the information was down.
Debbie Matenopoulos, who was fired from The View in 1999, appeared on Fox’s Good Day LA last week and had this message for Reynolds: “It’s called ‘show business.’”

Brandy to Replace Star Jones?
Posted by Stephanie Whiteside Categories: Daytime, Talk Shows, ABC, Gossip, Rumors
It seems like I just talked about this show—oh wait, I did.But there’s more news! Former pop star Brandy may be tapped to replace Star Jones on ABC’s The View. Brandy, the former star of Moesha, is scheduled to replace Star on Wednesday and Friday of next week (Renee Goldsberry is scheduled to guest host the shows airing today and Monday). Some speculate that Brandy may be a permanent replacement.

Rosie O’Donnell has avoided comment on the drama-filled departure of Star Jones from The View. She did coyly reply that her opinion of Star was well-known.
ABC has temporarily replaced Jones with actress Renee Elise Goldsberry, from One Life to Live. O’Donnell joins the morning talk show this fall.
The real question, however, is if Rosie, like Ellen, will suddenly remove all traces of lesbianism from her life once she is on daytime TV.

Star Jones Was Fired from The View
Posted by Christina Furtado Categories: Daytime, Talk Shows, ABC, Talent, Gossip
Earlier reports that Star Jones Reynolds quit The View have now been revealed to be untrue. According to a report on People‘s website, Jones Reynolds claims she was asked not to return to her next day of work on the popular talk show, and ABC confirms this report. Apparently, the final split was the product of a period of hostility between Jones Reynolds and the show. “What you don’t know is that my contract was not renewed for the tenth season,” she states. “I feel like I was fired.” She tells People that she got the news about her contract right after the show announced that Rosie O’Donnell, who openly dislikes Jones Reynolds, would be joining the show. I’m no fan of Star’s, but that’s a pretty shabby way to treat someone whose been with your show from the beginning, even if she is pretty obnoxious. Jones Reynolds made the announcement on the show on Tuesday, which was two days earlier than planned, by breaking into a segment on air conditioning.

According to Access Hollywood reports, Star Jones is leaving her hosting gig on The View. Her last day is set for sometime in July, just two months before Rosie O’Donnell is set to claim the seat at the table recently vacated by Meredith Viera who’s in turn claiming Katie Couric’s Today show mug. Am I the only one getting dizzy? Apparently Star will announce her departure on the show this week. She’s been an original cast member since the show’s debut in August 1997.

Leno and Conan Share Jokes?
Posted by Auburn Scallon Categories: Comedy, Late Night, Talk Shows, Editorial
Okay, so we all accept that late night television hosts comment on the days headlines, but Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien’s opening monologues last night were so similar, I’m starting to wonder if they share a writing staff. And I’m not just referring to content, but down to wording and structure of the jokes.
Punchlines in common:
- Referencing George W. Bush excusing himself from a meeting saying he was going to his room to read. Pause… The FBI decides “we’ve got to come up with a better excuse next time”
- Begin with reports that findings show FEMA reimbursed over a billion dollars spent on drugs, vacations, and pornography….“and the rest of it was wasted!”
- Reports from the new Superman movie claim that it was shot to have gay appeal…(Insert joke claiming Ryan Seacrest is the star here)
These jokes were literally almost delivered word for word on back-to-back shows. Isn’t the point of comedy the element of surprise?
Live With Regis and Kelly: Paris Hilton Interview
Posted by Kristen DeLeon Categories: Daytime, Prime Time, Reality, Talk Shows, FOX, Talent

Just this morning on “Live With Regis and Kelly” Paris Hilton was interviewed as a guest on the show. Paris spoke about her relationship with Nicole Richie and how the new season of “The Simple Life” has been changed from the previous seasons, such as the fact that Nicole and Paris are rarely in any of the same scenes together. She told Regis and Kelly that during the new season of the show she and Nicole would be acting as housewives in several different families and they would have to try and tackle all of the things the real wife does throughout a normal day. In one episode Paris and Nicole actually needed to wear pregnancy suits because the wife they were replacing was pregnant. During the interview, Paris told Regis and Kelly that she was also a singer. She claimed that she has always shown an interest in music and she will be putting out a CD that she has been working on for the past year.
Carlin and Coulter on Wednesday’s Leno
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Late Night, Talk Shows, NBC, Talent
In what has been said to be a complete scheduling coincidence, both Ann Coulter and George Carlin will appear on Wednesday night’s The Tonight Show. Many believe sparks are sure to fly with this combination of conservative versus anti-establishment. Coulter has gained a lot of attention recently, with the release of her book “Godless: The Church of Liberalism” – where she has made unfavorable comments about widows of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In her book, she believes that the widows are “reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis. I’ve never seen people enjoying their husbands’ deaths so much.”
Here’s hoping Carlin has some comedic counterpoint to lighten the late-night mood.
TBS just announced that it will air a half-hour pilot of a talk show called “Late Night Buffet.” Here’s the twist – it will involve Jim Henson puppets interviewing celebrity guests. No old school Muppets – like Kermit, Gonzo, Miss Piggy, etc. – here though. The show will feature a host named Augustus Pfiffle and his sidekick Delbert Kastle, as well as a late-night band of puppets. TBS plans to mainly target female viewers with this new venture…I know I’ll tune in! No word yet on the date of the pilot episode, but it will be taped July 22nd.

Amazon and Maher Team up to Host TV Interview Show
Posted by NoName Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, Talk Shows, ABC, Talent
Here’s the one I’ve been waiting for! Amazon goes TV. The perpetual non-profit has taken on the tube to sell books and other goods, and Bill Maher is its host. Is book selling really all that funny? Perhaps in the “Amazon Fishbowl” anything is possible. The late-night landscape will now include interviewing artists and authors. Since these folks can pretty much express themselves as seen fit, Maher’s new TV venture will finally be “politically correct!”
