Prison Break’s Last Days on TV

To be perfectly honest, I never suspected Prison Break would last beyond the first season. Like, who wants to watch some guys endlessly fail to break out of a jail? I always wondered where the show could possibly go, but FOX managed to surprise even me. Prison Break won awards, generated tons of buzz and enjoyed a four season run. But now, it’s all over.
“Prison Break had a hell of a run, but the run has ended,” stated Kevin Reilly, FOX president, at a recent press event. “This will be the last year of the show.”
The official excuse is that the show has naturally “played out,” but the ratings for the drama have been decidedly down this year. So…how much longer will fans have to enjoy the show? “We’ve got our remaining batch of four episodes, and there are a couple more they’re contemplating,” said Reilly. Could these “couple more” episodes be the series finale or a movie-type ending?
Reilly says that a “really cool ending” is planned, and that “it’s a hell of an idea.”

Slumdog Breathes New Life Into Millionaire Game Show

Next month’s Oscars broadcast may benefit ABC in more ways than one. A potential win for Slumdog Millionaire in February could bring heightened interest to the network’s summer schedule. That’s when Who Wants to Be a Millionaire may briefly return.
According to TV Week, ABC had already been considering a 10th anniversary-run for the game show. (The program debuted back on August 16, 1999.) Now the movie about a contestant on an Indian version of Millionaire would make the decision even more timely. The current economic climate could also help as well. Viewers - like those in the Golden Globe winner - may root for someone on hard times.
Although he is not confirmed for the gig at this point, it’s expected Regis Philbin would be part of any Millionaire return.

Sunday Ratings: Golden Globes Not So Bright

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Award Shows, Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, Reality, Specials, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The CW, 24, Desperate Housewives, Ratings
Despite the glitz and glamour of the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards, the telecast wasn’t a big draw. This year’s ceremony actually had its lowest numbers of its 13-year NBC history. This allowed CBS, boosted by an earlier Steelers/Charges game, to take the night in the viewers and demos.
8pm
- Approximately 14.6 million saw Slumdog Millionaire take top prize at the 2009 Golden Globe Awards (4.8/11 in 18-49).
- 60 Minutes (4.0/9) reported to 13.7 million.
- 24‘s adult demo numbers (12.5 million, 4.2/9) were the smallest ever for a series premiere.
- Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (10.3 million, 3.4/8) was off by 700,000.
- CW‘s airing of Carrie (0.5/1) scared up 1.4 million.

Bad, Bad Boyfriend: VH1’s Tool Academy to Reform Relationships?
Share

At first glance, Tool Academy looks like another high-drama, all shock-value reality show from VH1, a network which has prided itself on highly trashy unscripted shows in the past. Seriously, one more bad dating show and VH1 could for ever be relegated to the realm of “too high on the dial.” But the trailer for Tool Academy seems to promise more than just tacky TV…it actually looks like it wants to delve a bit deeper. So what’s the verdict, based on last night’s brand-new series premiere?
Here’s the premise: nine girlfriends are fed up with their boyfriends’ philandering, unromantic and uncaring ways. And they’re looking for a change. So they’ve decided to put their men in an intense, 30-day boyfriend boot camp where they will meet with specialists and be set on the road to reform. Those who fail the test are kicked out of the Academy, branded irrepressible tools and sent back to their girlfriends to be dumped or accepted for who they are.
But can a frog be turned into a prince, even through the magic of group therapy, one-on-one counseling, stressful challenges and reality TV? The Tool Academy hopes to prove that it can happen…for one lucky couple, at least.

Golden Globes: Who Wins the Best Dressed Award?
Share

Not everyone was able to walk away a winner at last night’s Golden Globes, but some stand out whether or not they received a statue. Some of the Hollywood elite looked like winners…while others, I wish I didn’t have to look at through the night at all.
All the results are in and the victories are tallied - but one. When it comes to last night’s Golden Globes, who wins the best dressed award?

Barely Legal: Worst NBC Title Ever?
Share
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, NBC, Editorial, News
I thought Kate Winslet’s double-win at the Golden Globes last night was a stunner, but this one takes the cake.
NBC, the network that chose to eliminate its entire 10:00 time slot next year for Jay Leno, is currently developing a project with the most laughable name around: Barely Legal.
Do we really have to explain why the show’s title would probably overshadow its content? (At least the kind of content an NBC series would have?) Did anyone on the creative team realize what would happen if fans tried Googling the program by that name? Am I the only one weirded out that the comedy stars Hilary Duff, someone who’s barely 21?
And while I understand where the title comes from (the concept is based on the true story of a California lawyer who passed the bar at age 18), that doesn’t make it feel less icky for me. Fortunately, since the show is still in development, it’s possible the network could change the title at a later date. But then again, maybe NBC is banking on the extra web traffic?

2009 Golden Globe Awards

One year after a strike-induced absence, the drinking resumed. Although the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards drew its usual set of followers tonight, this year’s program carried even more significance than usual. The reason? Heath Ledger.
With or without the Dark Knight nomination, the ceremony would have been interesting. Was this going to be the year a film about an Indian game show (Slumdog Millionaire) won top prize? Would either Meryl Streep (Mamma Mia, Doubt) or Kate Winslet (Revolutionary Road, The Reader) walk away with two awards? Could Mickey Rourke‘s comeback performance in The Wrestler earn him a surprise win over Sean Penn (Milk)?
To find out the answer to these questions (and many more), you can read our detailed coverage after the jump!
