The winners might not have changed, but the numbers did. One year after seeing its lowest scores on record, the Emmys actually showed (some) improvement.
CBS’ airing Primetime Emmy Awards averaged 13.3 million (4.2/11 in 18-49) over the three-hour telecast. That’s an increase of 8% in the viewers and 11% in the key demos. While it’s hard to pinpoint a reason for the uptick, many have attributed the rising numbers to host Neil Patrick Harris.
Meanwhile, an entirely different competition was taking place over at NBC. The close battle between the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys sacked approximately 22.4 million viewers (16.5/27). That now stands as NBC’s best overnight score ever from the Sunday Night Football series.

Could the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards be another year for firsts?
Around this same time last September, the execs of basic cable were thrilled to see one of their own finally win the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series (Mad Men). Meanwhile, producers of reality fare saw an award given to one of their hosts (Jeff Probst). So which other category could be covered during this round? Animation.
For the first time since 1961 (when The Flintstones were still on air), an animated program has been nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series. So will Family Guy finally go where The Simpsons has never gone before? Not if the six other contenders have anything to say about it!
So who won? Who lost? Which funnyman took home the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor since Jeremy Piven wasn’t even nominated? Read our West Coast play-by-play account of this evening’s telecast and find out!

Neil Patrick Harris Nominated to Host Emmys
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Award Shows, Prime Time, Specials, CBS, Gossip,
“Tonys, Emmys, and then there’s only one thing left - the Telemundo Awards,” Neil Patrick Harris joked around with reporters after he got the Emmy nod - not a nomination, but the hosting gig.
Oh wait - he got the Emmy nod, too. Harris is up for the Best Supporting Actor award at the event, which airs on Sunday night. He’s got nowhere to go with the gig but up; last year’s Emmys got the worst ratings in the history of the event. Only 12.3 million tuned in to watch TV’s biggest stars walk the red carpet in 2008. Popular Neil Patrick Harris could help pull the ceremony out of the fire.

For the second year in a row, Mad Men, with its 16 nominations, topped all drama programs. Meanwhile, 30 Rock broke comedy records with a whopping 22 noms. Overall, HBO was the most-nominated network with 99 mentions while NBC - yes, NBC - came in second.
