Sunday Ratings: ABC Wins, Oscars Tank

The are like the - it’s really pointless to mention other events when those telecasts are on.  But one major thing separates this year’s Academy Awards from the recent championship game: viewers.

Jon Stewart, OscarsLet’s break down the numbers:

  • Super Bowl XLII hit a record high this year; the 80th Annual Academy Awards hit a record low.
  • Having said that, Sunday’s broadcast drew the largest audience of the evening.
  • This year’s celebration of movies drew approximately 32 million viewers.  That’s a 20% drop from 2007 when won for Best Picture.
  • This ceremony received the lowest numbers for any Oscars telecast measured by Nielsen.  That’s going back to 1974.
  • Up until yesterday, the lowest-rated broadcast was in 2003 (when Chicago won).  At that time, our country had just recently gone into war with Iraq.

America's Next Top Model

MONDAY (2/18)

  • Prison Break (FOX, 8pm):  Tonight may be the end of the show as we currently know it.  Maybe Michael can finally let go of that steely gaze now.
  • Dance War (ABC, 8pm):  The next contenders will be announced during the spinoff’s season finale.  Finally, a reason for me to watch.
  • Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious (CW, 9pm):  Robin Antin is searching for a gal to complete an entirely different musical act.  With Danity Kane already taken, she had to settle for the 2nd crappiest group name available.

Jon Stewart Repeats as ‘Oscar’ Host

Jon StewartAfter cranking out a bloated and boring Oscars ceremony last February (Sorry, Ellen!)—the producers have gone back to square one.  ‘s , who helmed an extremely witty telecast two years ago, has been asked to host The 80th Annual Academy Awards.  This will be Stewart’s second time at bat.

Anyone who read our coverage of his stint knows how giddy I was about Jon Stewart’s performance.  All this time has passed, yet I can still remember him telling the audience ‘Good Night and Good Luck’ was how ended most of his dates.  (Okay—I actually read that in the previous post…but I swear it was etched in my brain).

It’s obviously too soon to say which movies will be nominated at this point—but I’m already imagining the movies Stewart could parody in his opener.  Maybe he could be deserted with Captain Jack Sparrow?  Or he could party with the boys of ?  Better yet—maybe he could do a musical number from ?

The ballots will be read Sunday, Feb. 24th on ABC.
