Could the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards be another year for firsts?
Around this same time last September, the execs of basic cable were thrilled to see one of their own finally win the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series (Mad Men). Meanwhile, producers of reality fare saw an award given to one of their hosts (Jeff Probst). So which other category could be covered during this round? Animation.
For the first time since 1961 (when The Flintstones were still on air), an animated program has been nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series. So will Family Guy finally go where The Simpsons has never gone before? Not if the six other contenders have anything to say about it!
So who won? Who lost? Which funnyman took home the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor since Jeremy Piven wasn’t even nominated? Read our West Coast play-by-play account of this evening’s telecast and find out!

For the second year in a row, Mad Men, with its 16 nominations, topped all drama programs. Meanwhile, 30 Rock broke comedy records with a whopping 22 noms. Overall, HBO was the most-nominated network with 99 mentions while NBC - yes, NBC - came in second.
This year’s ceremony will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris on Sept. 20 on CBS.

Grey’s Anatomy News: Katherine Heigl, Sandra Oh
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Drama, Prime Time, ABC, Grey’s Anatomy, News, Rumors,
In June, Katherine Heigl made a remark that was bound to anger some of her Grey’s Anatomy co-workers. When asked about the upcoming Emmys, last year’s winner said she didn’t submit an entry because she didn’t feel she was given worthy material.
And while some accused the rising movie star of purposely sparking the controversy (in an attempt to get out of her series contract), one of Katherine’s co-stars has just now spoken in her defense. At an engagement for the Hallmark Channel, Chandra Wilson (Dr. Miranda Bailey) said:
“All actors have to do that exactly same thing every year. The public at large doesn’t understand it’s not about your body of works. It can’t be something in the middle. You can have a great seasonal arc, but if you don’t have that show that’s your show, then it’s not the right thing for the category. It was amazing to me the way it got blown out of proportion. Some years I submit, some years I don’t.”

The 59th Annual Emmy Awards has not even started, yet I’m already sensing sensing a weird vibe about tonight’s telecast. Will the show be a celebration of those young and new (e.g. Heroes)? Will it be a tribute to those bowing out (James Gandolfini and crew)? Or will performer Kanye West somehow manage to cast a controversial shadow over the rest of the ceremony?
What a difference a year makes. Twelve months ago, we were still handing out trophies to stars from Will & Grace and The West Wing (those shows feel so five-years ago now). Today, we welcome a new crop of nominees including Ugly Betty and 30 Rock for Best Comedy. Last year, we were entertained by an always-hilarious Conan O’Brien. This year, we are threatened by a song and dance number from this year’s host, Ryan Seacrest. Last August, 24 snagged the award for Best Drama. This September, it’s not even nominated (yet somehow Boston Legal is).
I think it would be safe to assume the voters would predictably (and respectfully) shower The Sopranos with honors, but I’ll still be crossing my fingers for an upset sometime tonight. We’ll need something to talk about tomorrow…
Here’s the play-by-play of tonight’s events coming to you from the neglected West Coast!
