Neil Patrick Harris Approached for ‘Late Show’

Neil Patrick HarrisNeil Patrick Harris was asked to present The Late Show.

The How I Met Your Mother actor - who raises twins Harper and Gideon, three, with partner David Burtka - was asked to replace David Letterman on the nightly talk show and even got as far as meeting with CBS executives to discuss the opportunity.

"They called me in and sat me down and asked if that would be something that I would be interested in doing," he said. However, despite the lucrative offer, the 40-year-old actor turned down the job as he worried about getting "bored" and wanted more flexible working.

"In that instance I felt like I knew what my skill sets were. I was surprised that he pitched me that idea, and I sort of sat for a minute with it and told him the things that concerned me about the longevity of that kind of gig. I would get bored of the repetition fast, and the structure is so set that I don't have any interest in doing monologue, commercial, sketch, guest, guest, musical act, good night," he said on The Howard Stern Show.

Neil Patrick Harris to Host Emmy Awards

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Award Shows, CBS, Announcements, News,

Neil Patrick HarrisNeil Patrick Harris will present the 2013 Emmy Awards. The How I Met Your Mother actor - who previously hosted the awards in 2009 - will take over for the ceremony on September 26 this year, just a few months after he presents the Tony Awards in June.

"I couldn't be more honored and excited to be hosting this year's Emmy Awards. And what perfect timing - I'll just do the exact same script I'm about to use for the Tonys. 'And the Emmy for Best Revival of a Musical goes to Breaking Bad!' See, told you it works," he said.

CBS Entertainment chief Nina Tassler added, "Neil is the quintessential host - engaging, entertaining and a true showman - with a passion for celebrating the medium we all love. We're thrilled for him to return for CBS's broadcast of the Emmy Awards."

Neil has hosted the Tonys twice, with one stint in 2009 earning him and the production team an Emmy Award.

Neil Patrick Harris Wants HIMYM to End

Neil Patrick Harris in 'How I Met Your Mother'Neil Patrick Harris wants How I Met Your Mother to end after the current season.

The comedy returns this month for its eighth season and Neil - who plays Barney Stinson - says he and the rest of the cast are ready for the show to reach its conclusion.

"Our contracts end at [Season] eight, so it's one of those, you know, if they wanna do nine, they're welcome to, but we have a lot of other things [going on]. Cobie has got The Avengers that just made a billion dollars, Jason makes a ton of movies, I'm anxious to move East and Josh is directing and acting in movies as well. So, we all are anxious to move forward," said Neil, who stars alongside Cobie Smulders, Jason Segel, Josh Radnor and Alyson Hannigan.

Neil also admits the only reason any of the cast will sign up for another series is if it will be incredibly lucrative for them to do so: "I think the only way I think a season nine or any longer would happen would be [if it were] financially right - that's the reality of it. We love the show, we love doing it - eight years is a long time and we're as happy a family as we've ever been."
