The 59th Annual Primetime Emmys: In Review

It was an evening of firsts at the 59th annual primetime Emmys. The first time the awards show was on FOX. The first time Ryan Seacrest (resident FOX golden boy) hosted. The first time green concerns were proudly touted. And the first time I didn’t laugh at the Emmy host – not even once. FOX unabashedly promoted their own stars and shows all night long, though there were precious few wins for the network. Brian and Stewie from Family Guy provided some animated laughs, Lewis Black ranted and raved and performed a bit in the middle of the whole thing, and I found myself largely confused throughout the three hour-plus broadcast. Toward the end, Seacrest actually walked out on stage in a Henry VIII costume and told a gay joke – I couldn’t make this up if I tried, this actually happened. TV’s elite looked on in a mixture of horror and worry. Seacrest, unsurprisingly, acted and spoke exactly as he does while on American Idol. The strange, round stage provoked a lot of funny comments, and for a rare awards show change it was the acceptance speeches that became the saving grace of the FOX broadcast.

Lindsay Lohan, who has a new movie coming out this summer, was arrested several hours ago in Santa Monica. The 21-year-old actress was recently released from rehab, but she was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and possible possession of cocaine, though this is unconfirmed. Allegedly, Lindsay was involved in a car chase with the mother of an assistant and refused a sobriety test at the scene of her arrest, on Main Street. Lohan has been booked on two counts of misdemeanor and two felonies (transportation and possession). Lohan was released early this morning after posting a twenty-five thousand dollar bond. There were no passengers in Lohan’s vehicle. This arrest comes on the heels of a DUI charge in Beverly Hills, where Lindsay reportedly turned herself in for Memorial Day events involving a hit-and-run.

Jennifer Hudson struggled to gain notice and popularity for the first several episodes of American Idol 3. Today, she is the new hot actress in Hollywood. How did she make this incredible transformation? The young star landed the role of Effie White in 2005 (beating out former Idol Fantasia Barrino) in the movie Dreamgirls, an adaptation of the Broadway play. Hudson’s big voice and on-screen energy helped her finally gain fan approval (for which she battled on AI) and nationwide recognition in the form of the Academy Awards. It’s an honor just to be nominated – but to win is a huge deal. Though Hudson barely gained her seventh-place American Idol finish (she was brought in on a wildcard round), she won first place in the Oscar race. Hudson finally found the singing style that suits her best – and it shows.
