AFI’s Top Programs of 2008

Even though we’re accustomed to perusing the American Film Institute‘s lists of ranked movies, the organization also acknowledges excellence in television.

For their 2008 AFI Awards, a 13-member panel chose ten programs for their annual honors. Of the names selected, only Mad Men makes a return from the 2007 list. (Those not included in this round include Ugly Betty, 30 Rock, Dexter and Everybody Hates Chris.) Meanwhile, the only comedy represented this year is NBC’s The Office.

Tuesday Ratings: America’s Got Talent Does Well for NBC

Despite the disappointments delivered by reality fare this summer (and the presence of basketball game last night), NBC managed to have a great evening with the debut of America’s Got Talent. The show helped the Peacock Network nab a win in the viewers while ABC had a hold on the demos.

8pm

• Deal or No Deal (2.1/7 in 18-49) kicked off NBC’s night with 8.7 million.
• Jimmy Kimmel (2.6/9) warmed up 7.6 million basketball fans; the NBA pre-game show (3.3/10) drew in 8.5 million.
• The Moment of Truth (5.8 million, 2.4/8) was down 200,000.
• AFI’s 10 Top 10 (1.3/4) had 5.5 million movie lovers reminiscing.
• Beauty and the Geek* (0.5/2) trailed behind with 1.2 million.

This Week on TV (6/16-6/22)

MONDAY (6/16)

• The Bachelorette: DeAnna Tells All (ABC, 8pm):  “With six bachelors remaining, DeAnna Pappas assesses the competition to win her heart so far, as do her six beaus.” Apparently revealing their boxers just hasn’t told her enough.
• Weeds (Showtime, 10pm):  Season premiere. “Nancy, Andy and the boys, on the run after she set fire to their house, head to the beach and a ‘heartwarming family reunion’ with Judah’s grandmother.” Had I known this show was only 30-minutes long, I could have caught up a long time ago!
• The Mole (ABC, 10pm):  “The contestants, clad in nothing but their underwear, hit the streets of Santiago, Chile and solicit clothing.” At this point, the show could probably use a little skin to ramp interest up a bit.
• Secret Diary of a Call Girl (Showtime, 10:30pm):  Series premiere. “A high-priced London escort entertains a middle-aged client who enjoys role-playing and has a penchant for being down on the farm.” I think that summary says it all.

AFI’s Top Series of 2007

The American Film Institute - probably better known for ranking anything related to movies - has just listed their top television shows for 2007.
