2009 Golden Globe Awards

Golden Globe

One year after a strike-induced absence, the drinking resumed. Although the drew its usual set of followers tonight, this year’s program carried even more significance than usual. The reason? Heath Ledger.

With or without the Dark Knight nomination, the ceremony would have been interesting. Was this going to be the year a film about an Indian game show (Slumdog Millionaire) won top prize? Would either Meryl Streep (Mamma Mia, Doubt) or Kate Winslet (Revolutionary Road, The Reader) walk away with two awards? Could ‘s comeback performance in The Wrestler earn him a surprise win over Sean Penn (Milk)?

To find out the answer to these questions (and many more), you can read our detailed coverage after the jump!

2009 Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations (TV)

Mad Men

Even though SAG members are currently debating whether to strike, today’s award nominations gave them all a brief distraction. If the upcoming Oscars telecast doesn’t go on as planned, next month’s Screen Actors Guild Awards (scheduled for January 25th on TNT and TBS) could be the last time actors have a reason to celebrate.

Here are some of the noteworthy mentions from this year’s list of television nominees:

  • 30 Rock, Boston Legal, The Closer, John Adams and Mad Men all scored three noms each.
  • Dexter is up for its first win in the Outstanding Drama Series Ensemble category.
  • Desperate Housewives - a nominee for Best Ensemble - received no individual honors.
  • Debra Messing (The Starter Wife), Kevin Connolly (Entourage), January Jones (Mad Men), Anna Paquin (True Blood) and Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) all received Golden Globe nominations, but no SAG noms.

Lindsay Lohan Let Go Early from Ugly Betty

Lindsay Lohan and America Ferrera in Ugly BettyJust when I thought she was about to reboot her career…

Although she was previously scheduled to appear in six episodes (one last year, five this season), Lindsay Lohan’s run on Ugly Betty has just been cut short. The Mean Girls actress will now only be seen in only four. Why the change of plans? Well, the answer depends on who you ask.

According to New York Post sources, Lohan’s exit was either related to the star’s behavior or ‘s treatment of her. A supposed friend of Linds claims the show’s lead treated the redhead badly. “America was mean to Lindsay. Producers give her too much power. Lindsay didn’t do the last two episodes because America didn’t like her and got her kicked off.”

Meanwhile, a tipster from the actual production crew said the dismissal was purely based on the short timer’s actions. “It was a mess. Lindsay would show up every day with an entourage of people. She smoked 24/7, and after she left, they had to repaint her dressing room it was such a mess.” That same source claimed Lohan would also refuse to go on set before Ferrera did.

The 60th Primetime Emmy Awards

60th Primetime Emmy Awards logo

Even though the previous television season was marred by the annoying writers’ strike, I find myself really excited for the . Not only will this ceremony give us a chance to start anew, it’ll be the academy’s chance to celebrate what’s new.

Tonight, two basic cable shows (Damages, Mad Men) will get a chance to win for Outstanding Drama Series. (That would be an Emmy first.) Meanwhile, nominees in several categories will have an opportunity to compete in a Sopranos-less environment. An added bonus? A new category. This year, reality show hosts will finally be acknowledged for their programming contributions as well.

So who won? Who lost? Who ran up and grabbed the award even though they didn’t win? Read our West Coast play-by-play account of this evening’s telecast and find out!

America Ferrera Not a Fan of Gossip Girl

Blake Lively and America FerreraQuestion of the day: If you claim to be friends with someone, does that mean you have to like everything they do?

In a recent interview with Seventeen magazine, actress admitted there were a few shows out there she could probably live without. The 24-year-old star of Ugly Betty and Real Woman Have Curves (great movie, BTW) specifically named programs where true female bonds were sometimes lacking.

“Close, genuine female relationships are not what generally gets depicted in movies and TV shows. Like, if you’re watching The Hills or 90210, all the backstabbing shapes the way we act – you go to school, and you think your job is to find a sworn enemy and be jealous of each other.”

Ferrera then went on to include a show featuring one of her Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants co-stars. “I mean, I love Blake [Lively]; she’s a wonderful friend of mine, but shows like kind of condition us to be mean.” Ouch!

Could this disinterest in GG be the reason behind Ferrera’s now famous eye rolling video? (You can see that awkward clip after the jump.) Or was the semi-mean comment really a result of her watching too much GG? Oh, the possibilities.
