Balloon Boy Story was Full of Hot Air, Charges Coming

What may have started years ago in a Hollywood has come crashing to the ground in Colorado.

In a press conference earlier today, Sheriff Jim Alderden of Larimer County has confirmed that the balloon event from Thursday was indeed a hoax. “We have evidence at this point to indicate that it was a publicity stunt, done with the hopes of marketing themselves - or better marketing themselves - for a reality television show at some point in the future.”

This statement comes just two days after the police (intentionally) led the media into believing that they had bought the Heene family’s story. In fact, the former Wife Swap subjects had been under increased scrutiny by the media - and the authorities - after Falcon’s blunder during an interview with Wolf Blitzer.

I’m sure if CNN’s Wolf Blitzer had heard the response clearly, he wouldn’t have let the moment go.

When asked why he didn’t come out of hiding when his name was called, Falcon Heene (a.k.a. Balloon Boy) told his dad: “You guys said that we did this for the show.”

Cue the video to the :23 mark and listen for yourself. Then watch Mayumi and Richard Heene’s reactions. Is there more to this story? Did the event fall as flat as the media feared?

The Heene Family on Wife Swap

UPDATE: In an interview with CNN, Falcon Heene apparently claims to have pulled the stunt for a show.
UPDATE: Falcon Heene has been found safe. He had been hiding in an attic at his family’s home.

The missing child at the center of today’s wild balloon drama was no stranger to reality television.

Over the past year, 6-year-old Falcon Heene and his family have been the subject of two episodes of . The Colorado-based storm chasers first appeared on the show on October 3, 2008 and were then chosen as fan favorites for the program’s 100th episode on March 13, 2009. The Heene boys were also featured in a number of YouTube videos. (You can view one of those after the jump.)
