Syesha Mercado’s Bright Future

Syesha Mercado Third-place season seven finisher Syesha Mercado is planning a big, post-Idol career - but it probably won’t begin on the Broadway stage.

recently told interviewers that fans often ask her if she’s going to appear on Broadway any time soon. TV Guide reports that this is also a popular question from Syesha fans. “I’m capable of doing so many things outside of Broadway,” Mercado answered. And she’d like to explore them. Mercado explained that Broadway might not be the best career choice for her, at least not right now.

“I love all types of music,” Syesha admitted, but said if she had to put a label on her sound it might be called “R&B/Pop.”

Of her time on Idol, Mercado felt that “Yesterday” was a turning point for herself and her fans, saying it allowed people to “see” her more.

As to the future, Syesha named Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce as women in the industry she admires. She also wants to have a “healthy and happy” life. Doesn’t sound like a bad plan.

Top 6 Idols with Andrew Lloyd Webber

The presence of Andrew Lloyd Webber on means one thing: show tunes. After the Top 6 Idols were introduced, the show paid homage to the composer who has meant so much to both screen and stage. “Grease” Reality Competition to Feature Newton-John

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, NBC

Olivia Newton-JohnOkay, so Grease: You’re the One that I Want doesn’t immediately sound like a hit. But what if they raised the stakes with the promise that Olivia Newton-John, who starred as Sandy in the film Grease, would be on hand to dole out the complements and criticisms. Hmmm, the show now sounds slightly more interesting to me. And she ought to know what flies and doesn’t in this talent competition—the film was the most successful movie musical of all time, with the soundtrack being the most successful musical soundtrack.

Newton-John, who went on to earn multiple Grammy awards and star in other films, will guest star on the first two episodes of the talent show. Like American Idol, Grease: You’re the One that I Want will be looking to America to choose the most talented “Sandy” and “Danny” for the Broadway revival of Grease. The show will begin airing on Sunday, January 7th at 8:00 p.m.

Constantine MaroulisConstantine Maroulis, finalist from season 4 of American Idol, will be joining the cast of The Wedding Singer on Broadway. According to Playbill.com, negotiations are under way for Maroulis to join the musical, although the character has not yet been announced. Maroulis was last seen squinting and pouting on Idol, but seemed to do little after that, except for showing up in the Idol audience (still squinting and pouting). Prior to taking on the Idol competition, Maroulis graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music, appeared in indie films and off-Broadway shows. His highest profile gig was touring with Rent. While competing on American Idol, it was revealed that he was the lead singer for a hard rock band, but left the band to try his hand at Idol stardom. He will join The Wedding Singer on September 8th.

Scrubs: The Musical?

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Music, Prime Time, NBC, Scrubs

Scrubs  Here’s some good news for fans of both Scrubs and musicals—the series’ sixth episode this season will be a musical. For non-musical fans, this may not be such a great thing, but I’m curious to see how they pull it off. TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello had the opportunity to interview Scubs creator Bill Lawrence about the episode. Apparently, Lawrence called on the talent behind the Broadway musical Avenue Q to help out with the logisitics, which he calls “a big pain in the ass”—with additional rehearsals and recordings necessary to pull the whole thing off. Scrubs diehards are likely to think this is a genius move, since the series already incorporates its fair share of music and dancing (anyone catch Turk’s air guitar number?). The cast is for the most part excited about the prospect, with only some grumblings from Sarah Chalke—according to Lawrence, she’s not allowed to sing (I guess she’s not as good as the other cast members), but he needs to find a way to incorporate her character into the whole musical madness. The plot of the episode centers around a woman who has an aneurism and sees everything as a musical. According to Lawrence, this is based on an actual medical case where a woman who suffered an aneurism thought every time someone spoke to her, they were singing. Now the question—when will the episode air? With the series not set to start until mid-season, we will need to wait until early 2007 to check this out.
