The Amazing Race: Season 12: “We’ve Really Burned Bridges, for Sure”

The Amazing Race

Last week’s winners, Azaria and Hendekea, were the first to depart at 6:45 AM the next morning.  Nathan and Jennifer – the couple that narrowly came in second - started their way to the airport one minute later.  After a lengthy stay in Burkina Faso, the racers were finally set to visit a new destination: Lithuania.  Unfortunately, getting tickets to the country 3000 miles away proved to be confusing for the competitors – and bloggers (like me) at home trying to get it all straight.

Discovering that the airport offices were not yet open, the teams had to resort to internet research for the next few hours; they were only allowed to purchase tickets from official airline ticketing offices for this leg of the race.  Aside from Nicolas/Donald, most of the racers ended up converging at the same small internet stop.  (The grandfather/grandson duo found a different internet café to work out of.)  After learning they would all end up on the same 10:45 PM flight into Paris, Ronald chose to leave the other teams behind while he and Christina searched for an open Air France location.  The impatient father hated standing around by computers; he wanted to deal with a live person.  Although they had some difficulties working with their French-speaking agent, Ronald/Christina eventually secured tickets from Paris to Prague to Vilnius (Lithuania).  Their expected arrival time was 2:10 PM.

The Amazing Race: Season 12: “Let’s Name Our Chicken Phil”

The Amazing Race

Instead of venturing to a new destination, the remaining eight teams stayed in Burkina Faso for their latest round of adventures.  In other words – the episode was surprisingly airport-free.

Having reached the last pit stop in first place, Azaria and Hendekea had the honor of kicking off the next leg of .  Their first mission was to follow a marked path to a nearby village.  There, the teams would find a tribal chief waiting with a clue….and a live chicken.  The birds – a customary gift of generosity – was something the teams had to take with them during their travels.  (They would not be allowed to ‘check-in’ without their ‘chicken’.)  Shana and Jennifer opted to name their new pet ‘Phil’; something about its spiky hairdo reminded them of the ‘cute’ host.

The Amazing Race: Season 12: “Please, Lord, Give Me Milk”

The Amazing Race

While eight teams were taking advantage of their mandatory rest period in Amsterdam, one team was seeking medical attention.  As a result of the last grueling bike ride, Ronald suffered a painful hernia.  (It was unclear whether he blamed his heavy daughter at any point for the predicament.)  Fortunately, a doctor was able at least offer a temporary solution for the cranky father.

The next morning, Lorena and Jason kicked off the departures to the airport.  Next stop: Ouagadougou.  While it took a little bit of work to figure out exactly which country they were actually heading to (answer: Burkina Faso), all of the teams managed to pinpoint their destination.  Unfortunately, flights to the West African country were few and far between, so it was important to secure seats asap.  Despite a very close call for Christina and the hernia patient, eight of the nine teams were able to snag an 8am departure.
