American Idol Superstar: Carly Smithson

Carly Smithson

has whittled the competition down to only five, but sixth-place Carly Smithson isn’t at all bummed to have made it so far. The upbeat Irish lass had a positive outlook for all her interviewers, and no hard feelings toward anyone on the show.

“I don’t want to dwell on negative things. I’m looking forward to going out and making a record now. I’m just stoked,” told reporters.

Today, the usual analytical minds are at work trying to make sense of this recent shocker. Some suggest it stems from song choice - eliminations often do - because the tune Smithson sang on Tuesday (“Jesus Christ Superstar”) is considered controversial among Christians.

American Idol: One Step Closer to a Winner

Top 6 with Andrew Lloyd Webber

Tuesday’s performances inspired 38 million votes from fans, but great singing was obviously not one of the reasons the voters took to their phones.

The results show opened this week with the Top 6 Idols crooning “All I Ask of You,” as Lord accompanied them on piano. It’s a good song, and the performance was nice (even if there were times when Irish diva Carly Smithson overpowered the other two ladies in the competition). It was all smiling faces an fun as the Idols danced around on stage, but soon enough they were shuffled to the back to await the news we all wanted to hear.

Show Tunes Night on American Idol

Top 6 Idols with Andrew Lloyd Webber

The presence of Andrew Lloyd Webber on means one thing: show tunes. To create the right effect for this momentous night, the band section was extended to accommodate an orchestra and the contestants were forced to sing outside the usual Idol box. Who was able to pull it off…and who couldn’t get off the stage fast enough?

After the Top 6 Idols were introduced, the show paid homage to the composer who has meant so much to both screen and stage. For their master class with Lord Webber, the contestants were treated to a visit to the Phantom of the Opera theater. took a different approach to mentorship than last week’s Mariah Carey. He focused on the meaning behind the song and the emotional connections each singer need to make. Were they all able to follow the advice?

American Idol’s Final Six: Simon Cowell Sounds Off

Simon Cowell The stage is set for another exciting finale, with only six remaining contenders in the hunt for the title. We’ve suffered shocking results, shockingly bad (and good) performances and more scandals than you can shake a mouse at. But what does ever-surly judge Simon Cowell have to say about this season’s fresh crop of competitors?

This year’s Idol offers it all. You’ve got the foreign-born diva (Carly Smithson), the troubled-home-life rocker (David Cook), the oh-so-adorable kid (David Archuleta), the mellow maiden (Brooke White), the laid-back ladies’ man (Jason Castro) and the powerful pipes (Syesha Mercado). But what do this year’s Idols lack?

“Personality,” declared in a recent Variety interview. “They are giving very safe answers to questions, making safe song selections,” he expanded. “We are not getting a sense of who they are. We have to try to pull it out of them more.” Cowell even said the elimination of Michael John’s shouldn’t have been such a shocker. “You cannot deliver an uninspired performance at the top of the show,” he lectured, “And you can’t be up there imitating another singer.”

American Idol Narrows it Down to Six

Kristy Lee Cook

As elimination night began on , host Ryan Seacrest reminded us that “anything can happen on this show.” After a season-high vote tally of a whopping 36 million, what did happen was probably a long time coming - and hardly shocking for most viewers.

Seacrest quickly introduced the judges ( looked spectacular for a change - loved the upswept ‘do) before the Idols took the stage, singing “One Sweet Day.” Idol then reminded all that there’s only one week left to vote in the songwriting competition. Remember, the winning song will be crooned at the finale by the winning contestant. But soon enough, it was time to get down to the real reason for watching: elimination.

American Idol Top 7: A Vision, or a Watered-Down Version?

Top 7 Idols and Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey night on began on a rather solemn note, as host Ryan Seacrest remarked that all were “still feeling the shock waves here after last week’s surprising departure by Michael Johns.” As a chorus of boos filled the theater, he reminded us that “every single vote is vital.”

But really, all that’s old news. Tomorrow someone else will be kicked to the curb and it will time to interview them. Who will it be?

Superstar mentored this week, and at the outset I was afraid for the Idols. Carey is a diva unlike any other - a harder theme night could hardly be imagined. She looked fabulous for her mentor sessions, and seemed completely at ease with the cameras and contestants. Were the Top 7 just as comfortable with her songs?

The Idols Attempt Mariah Carey

Mariah CareyAny person with a shred of common sense knows—you shouldn’t go on aiming to sing anything by Whitney Houston, Celine Dion or Christina Aguilera.  Not only will the decision set you up for comparison, it’s likely you’ll end up in a world of embarrassment.

So why then would the producers schedule a whole night dedicated to ?  Isn’t that the last thing Randy, Paula and Simon would want the contestants to do?

During a recent exit interview, Michael Johns revealed he would have attempted a version of “Vision of Love” during next week’s show.  (Of course, his early exit means we are now being spared that potentially questionable rendition.)  But what does this mean for the rest of them?  Which records could David Cook, Jason Castro, Brooke White or Carly Smithson possibly sing?

I’m predicting Archuleta will take on “One Sweet Day”.  Make your guesses for the rest of them now!

American Idol: Shock and Awe

American Idol Top 8

The pushed-back Thursday elimination night on began with a promise from Ryan Seacrest, who touted “guest stars and surprises” at the top of the hour. There certainly were some surprises, but most of them weren’t at all good.

The evening kicked off with clips of , which has so far raised more than $60 million for various charitable organizations. Next, the Top 8 Idols sang “Shout to the Lord” while a huge choir sang in the background. It was, all told, way too schmaltzy for an elimination night. But more of the same would continue throughout the evening.
