American Idol 8: Top 4 Results

They sang their hearts out during the performance round. Now, the Top 4 contenders on would find out which of them was to be sent home.  Sixty-four million votes, the highest non-finale tally in Idol history, were cast to bring us the results of the evening.

The Ford video featured 2D cinematography, the song “Move Along” and extremely bad action sequences where Idols ran toward a red car. The group number, “School’s Out,” gave us Slash on the guitar and four very helter skelter Idols who gyrated around the stage. Allison and Adam managed to steal the show again during this group run, though Slash did a fair bit of scene-stealing of his own thanks to a particularly riveting guitar solo.

During the pre-results chat, Danny Gokey called Wednesdays the “most tiring” days of the week. Kris Allen is surprised he’s made it this far in the contest. “We don’t want humble anymore,” told him dryly. Gokey said his last scream from the night before must be his “funniest moment on Idol,” and was so charming and good-natured about the whole thing I’m suddenly back on him again.

Kara DioGuardi Wants to Meet a Former Idol

Kara DioGuardi Though newcomer Kara DioGuardi has a whole lot of new reality TV responsibilities, she’s still a songwriter at heart. The judge recently made a public appeal to one former Idol who obviously caught her ear.

During a Thursday conference, the judge issued a plea to rocker . “Please call me,” she asked, saying she’d like to co-write a song with him. DioGuardi has worked with other ex-Idols in the past, but she’s never had the chance to rock with Grammy-nominated Daughtry.

American Idol to Celebrate Fame

American Idol logo

fans have found themselves in this position before. A final four competition comprised of three men and one woman. One’s a rocker, another is a diva and two more have huge fan support. Will Idol history repeat itself? Is this the last week we’ll see the season’s resident rocker, David Cook?

Not if FOX can help it. Tonight the theme will be songs from the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, a wide umbrella of tunes which will no doubt give Cook the opportunity to shine in his chosen genre. It was in the fourth-place position that rocker and seeming shoe-in for the title was eliminated. But does that mean Cook will follow his footsteps?

Even if he did, that certainly wouldn’t be too bad. Daughtry now enjoys huge success with his famous band and probably isn’t at all displeased with how it all turned out. By this time Thursday, Idol will narrow the field down to only three. Will this year’s rocker have more longevity than others from seasons past?

Idol Gives Back Celebrity Guests Announced

Idol Gives Back will continue it’s self-serving humanitarian efforts with another star-studded event this year. I gotta tell you, I watched every minute of the charitable broadcast last year and the only thing I was impressed with was Jack Black. During the Thursday elimination show, Ryan Seacrest started to rattle off the big names which will be associated with the big event this year.

As the crowd screamed and Seacrest cheekily grinned, he spit out attention-grabbing names like Brad Pitt, , Reese Witherspoon, Mariah Carey, Carrie Underwood and Chris Daughtry. He slipped Snoop Dogg in there, too, and that’s when I started screaming. Love the Dogg. Love him. Now, I have a reason to watch the event. Thanks, Snoop.

Believe me, the list of names will only get longer and longer as the Idol Gives Back date of April 9 draws near. They’ll over-promote it the point that we’ll all get sick, and then they’ll do the show and suck a good two hours of TV time out of it. It sounds tedious, I know…but don’t forget, Snoop will be there. He brings a certain cool cachet Idol couldn’t hope to achieve otherwise. Way to luck out, .

American Idol: Why it’s No Good to Be Too Good

David ArchuletaIt’s an incredibly bold idea. Start a reality show on the premise that somewhere out there, amazing singers are lurking and just waiting for their chance. Then, go out and find these incredible singers and let American decide which one gets to experience fame. But scratch the surface of , and there’s much more involved than just singing.

The best don’t always win. It’s just that simple. I mean - c’mon - Taylor Hicks? Really, was he the best singer? And Chris Daughtry - if he can’t win the show, you might as well throw the radio out the window. got booted, then went on to sing her heart out in an Oscar-winning Dreamgirls performance. Last year’s winner Jordin Sparks had dismal first week record sales (the lowest in Idol history), though she beat out twenty-three other fantastic singers just to seal the deal. Listen, Clay Aiken didn’t even win his season - remember? The best don’t always win.

This Week on TV (12/17-12/23)

Gossip Girl

MONDAY (12/17)

  • (ABC, 8pm):  The first of six-airings this week.  In this game show, the contestants ‘challenge each other’s intellect and skill, but a single wrong answer disqualifies them from trying for the $1.5 million prize.’  Seriously - if a show is going to be named ‘Duel’, it should involve body blows.
  • (NBC, 8pm):  This four-part series brings us Michael Bolton, Patti LaBelle, Nick Lachey and Kelly Rowland.  Surprisingly, this combo is not part of some program.
  • (ABC, 9pm):  “Eric must organize a baby party without ruining friendships.”  His pals are all hoping they don’t have to come.
  • (NBC, 10pm):  “Dan is sent to rescue a mother and son in an RV hanging from a cliff.”  Just for clarification—do his travels always predate the existence of 911?

The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards

MTV Moon MenBefore this evening’s festivities begin, the producers of the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards should really thank the scandal-plagued artists who’ve unintentionally thrown publicity their way.  Tonight, we’ll be thinking about those performers who’ve canceled because they need to be in rehab (Amy Winehouse) and closely watching those who should probably go back ().

We’d been warning you for weeks that this would be a one-time only telecast, but in case you forgot—we hope this helps.  And for those who live on the West Coast (like me), you can play along and read our coverage as if it were in real-time:

American Idol Announces Big Name Guests

American Idol logo As if American Idol needs any more fuel for the already astronomical ratings, the producers have announced some very special guest stars. If you tuned in last night for the first eliminations, you saw former American Idol Fantasia Barrino perform. But wait—there’s more! Ryan Seacrest also announced last night that there would be many big name stars showing up as special guests this season. Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, Jon Bon Jovi, Martina McBride, Diana Ross, Barry Gibb and Lulu and Peter Noone. It’s unclear what the theme will be for each show these performers contribute to, but the star wattage is impressive. Other fun tidbits from Thursday’s program include the announcement that Fantasia will star in The Color Purple on Broadway (with a quick glimpse of producer Quincy Jones), as well as the use of Chris Daughtry’s (another former Idol) song “Home” for the send-off of the eliminated contestants. Another former finalist will show up next Thursday—Kellie Pickler will be on hand to perform her single “I Wonder.”

Daughtry, who has seen much success since his departure from Idol, will perform at the Greensboro Coliseum to kick off the NCAA women’s basketball tournament on March 24 and 26. Organizers of the event expect between 6,000 and 7,000 people to attend the concert, which could give the city a boost in their efforts to host the 2012 women’s Final Four. Daughtry made it to fourth place before getting the boot on Idol, but his exit from the show didn’t dampen his career any.
