Colbert Officially Gets His Name in Space

Okay - so it didn’t go exactly like he had hoped. But Stephen Colbert’s efforts weren’t entirely in vain.

On last night’s episode of , astronaut Sunita Williams crushed Stephen’s dreams when she announced the official name of NASA’s new space module. Instead of calling the node “Colbert,” the administration instead opted for “Tranquility.”

But to appease the disappointed host and all his voters, the administration made sure to name something after him. Now astronauts at the space station will “jump on” a “C.O.L.B.E.R.T.” every day. To find out exactly what that is, cue the video to the 3:41 mark.

NASA to Announce Module Name on Colbert Report

Stephen ColbertAfter weeks of waiting, the time has finally come. On tonight’s episode of , NASA will officially reveal what the new international space station module will be named.

This announcement is of particular interest to fans of the Comedy Central program because they played a role in the final decision. After comparing the adminstration’s previous four suggestions - Serenity, Legacy, Earthrise and Venture - to organic teas, host Stephen Colbert encouraged his viewers to submit write-in votes. When the naming contest ended, ‘Colbert’ had bested the 2nd place finisher by 40,000 votes.

Unfortunately, Stephen’s personal victory won’t guarantee him bragging rights in outer space. Although opinions were solicited, NASA reserved the right to pick the final name. So how does Colbert feel about the matter? “I certainly hope NASA does the right thing. Just kidding. I hope they name it after me,” he said in a statement.

Astronaut Sunita Williams will be the guest on this evening’s show.

Stephen Colbert Shines as Webby Winner

Stephen ColbertComedy Central host won’t be winning a bid in the U.S. Presidential election, but he has managed to walk away with one prestigious award on the year.

Colbert was recently named “Person of the Year” and given a Webby award to mark his feat. Webby awards, a vehicle dreamed up by the Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, are given out for Internet excellence, and those people who do their part to maintain this ideal. The award ceremony takes place June 9 and 10 in New York, but the winners are (as part of Webby tradition) only allowed to make a five-word acceptance speech.

“Person of the Year” is the highest Webby honor. Colbert won for “the innovative way he has used the Internet to interact with fans of .” Also known as the Colbert Nation, these fans have oft been prompted by Colbert to participate in online activities, such as changing the status of the American buffalo on Wikipedia.

Comedy Central Hosts Return

Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart TV (and ) got a boost Monday night with the return of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert of . Absent from TV since November 1, 2007, both hosts winged it on-air without their writers, and neither was afraid to comment on the current scriptless situation. But even with these valiant efforts, viewers didn’t see the same shows they’re used to.

It’s been pondered for weeks now, and finally the question has been answered. How will Comedy Central’s two late night shows fare without writers? For these first episodes back, both hosts talked about the at length, each interviewing experts on labor relations and unions. , who has a background in stand-up comedy, seemed as relaxed and at home as ever on stage, though he referred to the present as “uncomfortable circumstances.” Stewart also announced a name change for the show, to be in effect for the duration of the strike: ‘A Daily Show’.

One Colbert Nation Under All?

Stephen ColbertDaily Show fans got a surprise treat this week when Stephen Colbert rode in on a wagon pulled by Uncle Sam. This, on an episode already promising prestigious actress Meryl Streep. Colbert pulled out a bale of hay and kicked back to enjoy a brew he produced from within, accepting a huge round of applause from studio fans. It was ’s show that launched Colbert’s success, eventually leading to a spinoff and the birth of the Colbert Nation (the nickname given to Colbert fans).  Colbert gave Stewart a note card containing questions he wanted asked, then surprised fans with his official announcement to officially consider whether – or not – he was going to run for the office of the President of the United States of America. Colbert added that he hoped to make the announcement of his decision on a more prestigious show. Fifteen minutes later, on , he did.

Stephen Colbert Accused of Joke Theft

Stephen Colbert  During an episode of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, host made a joke that the Republican presidential candidates sounded like Klingons (you know, from Star Trek) while talking about honor. Now, Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks, an Air America morning show, says the joke was actually his – told on his Sept. 7 radio program. Uygur has already made a stink on YouTube, the Web site that is slowly taking over every single media story in the U.S. A Colbert spokeswoman offered no immediate comment, but said the issue is likely to be addressed on the show. As might say, “eggggggcellent.”

Colbert said the book serves as a Constitution for the Colbert Nation, which is the appellation he has coined for his many, many fans. Big Names Booked at Comedy Central

Jon StewartComedy Central’s , best known for tongue-in-cheek humor on the satirical , is getting attention from everywhere recently. Not only has Stewart’s show been nominated for an Emmy, but the host also recently turned down a network gig with NBC. Upcoming guests for The Daily Show include four Presidential candidates: Senator Joseph Biden (D – Del.), who has already appeared on the show once; John McCain (R), who will make his tenth appearance on the show August 16; Tommy Thompson (R – for. Gov. Wisc.) will appear on August 20; and Barack Obama (one of the heavyweight Democratic contenders) will make his second appearance on August 22.  The month promises to be full of candidates, coverage on the primary debates, and the jokes that make even this political mess fun.
