In my estimation, has always been something of a ride-it-till-the-wheels-fall-off kind of network. Habitually in fourth place behind all the other major networks, the channel is always striving for a first-place hit. For a brief moment in the winter of the writers’ strike, NBC found television gold in the form of a re-make.

More than twelve million tuned in for the January premiere of the first season of the re-vamped and NBC suddenly had a hit on its hands. Instead of playing it cool or playing it safe, the network went full steam ahead into a second season. Way back in April, before season two’s May premiere, NBC announced tentative plans to bring the show back in the summer of 2009 for yet a third season.

But now the second season of the show has arrived, has been aired and has ended. Will NBC still bring this brutal physical reality competition back for another turn in the TV spotlight?

American Idol Reject Makes Good

Josiah LemingThink way, way back to the beginning of the seventh season of . During Hollywood Week, two singers struck such a strong chord in me that I was passionately rooting for them both to make it to the Top 24. The first was Kyle Ensley, the one I called the governor of Oklahoma and who Simon Cowell wanted to keep but who was kicked in favor of Colton Berry (who was one of the first of the Top 24 to be sent packing, proving that I was right in wanting to keep Kyle instead). The second standout I cheered valiantly for was young Josiah Leming. You may remember him as the sweet-faced kid who was tragically sleeping in his car.

Leming made the monumentally brave choice to sing without the band for his last audition, a decision which ultimately led to his demise on the show. After Hollywood, Josiah Leming returned to his parents’ home in Tennessee. But he did not stay there for very long.

David Cook Going Off the Singles’ Market?

David CookSeventh season winner David Cook won hearts with his edgy look and sound, gaining notice early for his self confidence and unique stylings. But this single guy may not stay that way for much longer.

Last week, enjoyed a dinner date with second Idol season competitor Kimberly Caldwell (eliminated in seventh place). Don’t remember the name? You might also recognize Kim as the bubbly blonde who hosts on the TV Guide channel, notably the show Idol Tonight (a series dedicated to breaking down Idol performances and interviewing contestants). Cook recently told Regis and Kelly that “we’ll probably hang out again.” (You can see video of the two of them together after the jump.)

Don’t worry ladies, one date does not a committed guy make. You might still have a chance.

American Idol’s Heavyweight Battle

David vs. David

For the epic battle of the Davids, began the week with a boxing, King of the Ring-type theme. Famous ring announcer Michael Buffer kicked off the night not with his famous catchphrase, but with Ryan Seacrest’s (”this is American Idol”). He called this final showdown between the two the “fight of the century, scheduled for three rounds of competition.”

The competitors were announced as David “Sugarfoot” Cook and David “Babyface” Archuleta. Both were replete with silk robes and boxing gloves, while the season’s other Idols looked on from the audience. finally appeared to hype up the crowd, encouraging the audience to sound off for their favorite David.

David Archuleta looked a little swamped by the Nokia theater, shyly admitting that it was, for him, a “dream come true” just to be there. Randy Jackson urged both the competitors to “leave everything on the floor,” calling the night’s contest a “duel for the King of the Nokia.” He advised each to “drop it hard tonight.”

Remember American Idol’s Luke Menard?

Luke MenardHe had the right look and a generally good singing voice, but song choice hurt Luke Menard early in the competition. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, maybe a jarring recollection will: Menard is the one who sang “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” the 80s Wham hit. If he had sung anything different, it’s possible we would all know Luke Menard a whole lot better.

, 29, has been frequently in the audience during the seventh season of Idol, rooting his fellow contestants on from the sidelines. Recently, the former carpet-layer was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer. This sad news is somewhat lightened by one positive: this disease has a very high success rate of treatment. Menard, who is currently in L.A., has plans to return home to Indiana in the near future.

Betting on the Davids: American Idol Odds

David ArchuletaDavid Cook

The finale spectacular is a mere days away, but already the eyes of the world are turning to the two remaining contestants: David Archuleta and David Cook. This epic battle between rocker and balladeer has been the hoped-for season ending….but will it all shake out the way you think? Can’t decide which David has a better chance? Maybe the odds makers can help.

BodogSports shows that is the current betting favorite (he has 250 odds, which basically means that if you were to -only theoretically, mind you, as I’m not advocating gambling on this nor any other event- bet $250 on David you’d only win $100 back). Archuleta, meanwhile is the underdog with +170 odds (if you bet $100, you’d get back $170).

Bet365, another site, also shows that is no longer the odds-on Idol favorite. This British-based site does not take bets from American citizens, showing that the David-David conundrum has captivated the entire world.

Remember, these odds are by no means accurate portrayal of the voting wave which is sure to come after Tuesday’s performance episode. For all we know, David Cook could trip over the microphone stand and David Archuleta could forget every word to one of his songs. In other words, vote the way you want - blast the betting odds.
