Gone but Not Forgotten: Eliminated American Idol Speaks Out
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol
David Hernandez, who impressed judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson early in the season, has been talked about more for his somewhat shady past than his singing - but that’s generally how it goes with American Idol scandal. The stripper-turned-reality contestant was the first to leave the Top 12, but many attribute this more to bad press than bad singing.

In the Mold: What Does it Take to Win American Idol?

Kelly Clarkson. Fantasia Barrino. Taylor Hicks. Carrie Underwood. Ruben Studdard. Jordin Sparks. Put them together and it’s hard to find one common element - other than the fact that they can all sing. But here’s the thing - many of the contestants on American Idol can carry a tune. Winning the show takes a whole lot more than sensational singing. What does it take to win American Idol?
The hot button issue for this year’s crew of competitors is sexual orientation. The Internet community is alive with comments, videos, and hooplah regarding the sexual preference (real or imagined) of Season Seven’s best and brightest singing talents. As far as fans know, a homosexual has never won American Idol. Some say that one will never win on the show.

American Idol: First of the Top 12 Sent Packing
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Editorial

Elimination night on American Idol began with more cross-promotion. This time, it was Jim Carrey (star of an upcoming 20th Century FOX movie) in a weird elephant suit. During his banter with host Ryan Seacrest, the movie star cried out, “I love the show, I love the contestants.” Me, too…up to a point.
This promotional effort (which is probably totally unnecessary - the movie will bank big bucks whether Carrey parades around in a silly suit or not) was quickly followed by an announcement. “We’re changing the theme!” Ryan Seacrest announced, claiming that an avalanche of telephone calls and e-mails led the show to feature tunes from the Beatles next week as well. I’d like to venture a guess that the tenor of those comments was mostly in the I-didn’t-hear-what-I-wanted-to-hear vein and that next week, we’ll hear much more of the White Album. Just a guess, though.
Next came a quick early Beatles medley of songs, a mishmash of “All My Lovin’,” “I Feel Fine,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” and “Help!” as performed by the Top 12. But as soon as the music faded, it was time to get to the real business of the evening: getting rid of one of them.

American Idol: Twelve Top Performances?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Editorial
It’s been hyped for weeks, anticipated since last year’s Idol was crowned, and advertised until TV watchers can hardly stand the promos. Tuesday night it finally arrived - the performances from American Idol‘s Top 12. Was it worth two hours of programming?
The night kicked off with the big debut of a big new stage, where in an odd setup the band is suspended and the judges are shoved behind some of the crowd. Host Ryan Seacrest showed off the new lights and interiors as fans screamed, then dropped the bomb that this performance night would be melodic with songs from the famed Lennon-McCartney songbook. My breath caught, and immediately I was excited. Surely one of the Idols would be bold, brave, brash…surely, one of them would sing something from the darker, more politically-minded years of the Beatles. Surely, we would hear some hot 70s-era vocals.

American Idol: Top 12 Revealed
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Editorial

American Idol’s Top 12 is a big milestone for the show. It marks the beginning of Ford commercials, brings contestants one step closer to the summer-long Idol tour, and usually symbolizes the cutting away of dead wood. But I’ll go ahead and say it - I’m not pleased with the way it all went down. Let’s re-cap.
The night kicked off with a fantastic performance from Season 6 runner-up Blake Lewis, who saucily performed “How Many Words.” He shared a few comments with host Ryan Seacrest before he quickly departed, so that everyone could turn their attentions to twelve empty chairs lined up on the stage.

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Editorial
I have been looking forward to 80s week on American Idol with the utmost excitement. Madonna, Cindy Lauper, The Sex Pistols, The Police - the list of great performers from the 80s goes on and on. Instead, the Idol men gave us Wham, Genesis, Celine Dion, Lionel Richie, and a whole host of other tunes that added up for another strange song selection night.

Why American Idol Let David Hernandez Stay
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Editorial, Gossip, News
Yesterday, we told you about the latest controversy surrounding American Idol‘s David Hernandez. (To summarize quickly: he was a male stripper/dancer who performed fully nude for mostly male clients.)
Given Idol‘s decision to boot frontrunner Frenchie Davis off the show back in 2003 (after news of her racy lingeries photos leaked out), it was reasonable for people to worry about Hernandez’s fate. But in an interview with TV Guide, executive producer Ken Warwick made it (surprisingly) clear that the issue was a non-issue.
Here are some choice quotes from that Q&A:
When asked if David Hernandez’s fate would be affected by the revelation:
“No, it won’t make any difference. The truth is, we’re never judgmental about what people do to earn a living. They’ve got to put food in people’s mouths.”
When asked if he knew about David’s past:
“No, I wasn’t. But the truth of the matter is, it wouldn’t have made any difference. “

Digging Up the Dirt on More American Idols
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Gossip, Video
We all knew someone from American Idol would eventually have their trash uncovered….but four different contestants?
Last week, Amanda Overmyer’s brush with the law was revealed. This week, we have a foul-mouthed boy, a former male stripper and a girl who likes to take semi-racy photos with her friends.
First up - Danny Noriega. I’ve hated the pouty mouth singer from Day One. (His attitude overrides any shred of talent he might have.) Now there’s this video that has surfaced on MySpace. It may have been intended as a joke, but I fail to see the humor in it. (I do like making fun of him though.)

American Idol: Top 10 Guys Perform
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Editorial, Features
It’s all about the 70’s this week on American Idol, and upon hearing this wonderful news I was instantly interested. There are many, many fabulous songs from this decade. Last week it was 60’s, now it’s 70’s…okay, I’m sensing a theme. This can only mean the 80’s are to follow, and if this is the case I must make a general plea: please, please, someone do a punk rock song. The 80’s! You can’t deny punk rock. That being said, we’ll get back to the Tuesday night performances. (Though I will say, here and now, that I’m thoroughly disappointed no one picked Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” Tuesday).
