Barack Obama Makes His Statement

In a highly presidential fashion, democratic White House contender Barack Obama bought up thirty minutes of network TV time (on several stations, no less) to directly address the American public he hopes to win over. It was all very State of the Union - and incredibly politically savvy. But did his message strike a chord with viewers?
Replete with clips of Obama’s more moving speeches and statements from fellow Democrats along with high-ranking CEOs and others, the half-hour infomercial put Barack right into the living rooms of U.S. voters. There was no stage, there were no other candidates jockeying for position or good sound bites; there was no Sarah Palin or John McCain. It was, all in all, one of the best aspects of the entire campaign season thus far.

New HBO Series Offering a Grim Future?

U.S. homeowners are facing crisis. The American economy is failing. The time-honored tradition of the Presidential debates has become little more than a clever PR tactic, and we’re in the middle of one of the most intense election years the States have ever known. If you’re among those who think the world is going to hell in a hand basket, or even if you’re not, HBO’s new futuristic series may just appeal to you. It could also offer a not-so far-fetched look at our potential future.
In Americatown, the world has advanced 25 to 40 years into the future (the exact year remains unclear), and the great country of America has weathered at least one too many massive catastrophes. In the series, the decline of the country has sparked massive immigration that gives rise to Americatowns all over the world. Think Chinatown, with buffalo wings and beer.
“By presenting Americans as immigrants in the near future, as both underdog and hero in the drama of global dislocation, we substitute a mirror for the rancor that informs much of the partisan debates on immigration,” said series writer Bradford Winters.

Real Wonder Woman Sounds off on Sarah Palin

For years (four, to be precise), Lynda Carter wowed fans in her skimpy flag-inspired costume and deadly accessories. She personified truth, justice and beauty with her raven locks and rock-hard abs. She was Wonder Woman, and for many men who remember her heyday she still is a heroine.
But when asked her feelings about Sarah Palin, whom the media refers to as a wonder woman, the “real” Wonder Woman didn’t even try to act demure. What did Lynda Carter have to say about the self-styled hockey mom, bulldog-in-lipstick who is John McCain’s running mate?
Be advised, her show may have been child-friendly, but that doesn’t mean Lynda Carter’s political comments are.

The Election’s Not Over

After months of hard-core coverage, tons of big banner headlines and more primary elections than you can shake a stick at, suddenly the election news is quiet. Now that all the little battles are over (McCain vs. the world, Obama vs. Clinton, etc.), there is only one last war to wage.
And yet…no one seems to care.
The news has slowed almost to a trickle and the television coverage is slim at best. But there’s a whole lot more to do before the country takes to the polls on November 4, 2008. Namely, aren’t there supposed to be some Presidential debates coming up?

The Day American History Changed

The first televised presidential debates took place between a man named John Kennedy, and another by the name of Richard Nixon. The latter had a darker complexion, a five o’clock shadow and let’s face it - he wasn’t as young and attractive as JFK. Many historians believe that if these debates had not been televised, for the very first time giving Americans an up close and personal look at their candidates, the election might have gone a different way. That’s the power of television.
Now, all debates are televised. Hours and hours of news coverage are devoted to those debates, to interviewing the candidates, to talking about political ideas and promises. For months, those same television newscasters have been talking about this year’s presidential election, and in their way they have helped to write one of the most important pages of history. That’s right: it’s official. Barack Obama has secured the democratic presidential nomination. CNN, via television, broke the story first.

Don’t Count Out Recount

From the first trailer, I was intrigued. In the next moment, I was checking the upcoming TV schedule to be 100% sure my DVR would capture the movie at the first possible opportunity. And I’ve got to tell you, I just can’t wait to watch HBO’s Recount.
I had the dubious pleasure of living through the 2000 presidential election - and all the many, many television hours this momentous and highly historical race entailed. Every four years in November, we as a nation go forth to various polling locations to exercise our Constitution-given Democratic freedoms. But on the evening of November 7, 2000 most people went to sleep without knowing just who the hell the President of the United States would be. But eventually, the decision was made…and so was history. The eight years that followed were rife with events which could keep Hollywood script writers busy for the whole of the century. It was a defining moment, it was the catalyst which undoubtedly led to two earth-shattering wars, and it is still something which (at least, for me) remains shrouded in mystery.
No longer will this remain the case…perhaps. The HBO film Recount will take us back to the past, but what sort of picture will this flick paint?

Are You Ready for a Presidential Rumble?

All eyes are turning toward Pennsylvania, where a highly important primary war will soon be waged. Pundits expect the race to determine the outcome of the Democratic nomination…but the pundits have said that about many, many primaries during the current race to the White House. Before you Pennsylvanians cast your votes, let’s see how the Presidential hopefuls handle themselves in a wrestling ring.
The three contenders will appear tonight on the USA network for Monday Night Raw, each with taped messages for wrestling fans at large - and Pennsylvania voters in particular. “Tonight, in honor of the WWE, you can call me Hillrod,” Senator Hillary Clinton will say in her message. “This election is starting to feel a lot like ‘King of the Ring.’ The only difference? The last man standing may just be a woman.”

Not-So-Super Debate for Super Tuesday

The only two Democratic Presidential contenders remaining sat down Thursday night to address the issues in the last Democratic debate before the colossal event dubbed Super Tuesday by the media. For those of you who didn’t see it, the event was marked by two hours of hemming, hawing, and several pointless questions. In other words, it wasn’t a huge departure from the other debates we’ve been treated to thus far.
Senator Barack Obama began with his opening statement, first thanking former competitor John Edwards in a very classy beginning parry. He made the prediction, to stirring applause from a group of voters which included famous directors Steven Spielberg and Rob Reiner, that either he or Hillary Clinton will be the next President of the United States. But let’s not count the Republicans out yet.
Obama also referred to the fierce battle he and his fellow Senator are currently waging for the Democratic nomination, calling their race “competitive.” Nice euphemism. Nobody’s buying it, though. He also said it’s time to take the country in a “new direction” and said this (the election) will be a “defining moment” in history.
Clinton, who was carefully neutral in a brown pantsuit which she erringly paired with some simply terrible turquoise jewelry, looked on with an ingratiating smile before beginning her own opening remarks. Sure to get her digs in, Clinton called Bush’s “a failed administration” and predicted there will be a “heap” of problems to solve when either she or Obama makes it to the White House next January.

In the past weeks, campaigners on both sides of the aisle have changed their strategy and speechery to secure a bid in the upcoming Presidential election. Though many started out on this quest (twenty-plus politicians and actors threw their hats into the primary ring), only a handful now remain. In a continuing effort to keep themselves “viable,” they’re changing their stances and showing new facets of their personalities. (Hey, whatever it takes to get votes, right?) But perhaps none have attacked the idea of showing the public a new face more than Senator Hillary Clinton. And she’s playing this one to the hilt, as her upcoming appearance on the Tyra Banks Show will prove.
