UPDATE: You can read Betty White’s statement on her friend’s death here.
Rue McClanahan, the Emmy-award winning actress from The Golden Girls, passed away early this morning after suffering a massive stroke. She was 76.
This was the second stroke this year for McClanahan. She also suffered a minor one back in January while recovering from a November bypass surgery. According to Rue’s manager, her family was with her when she died. Barbara Lawrence added: “She went in peace.”
Although McClanahan will be best known for playing the sex-crazed Blanche Devereaux, she also made television audiences laugh playing characters like Vivian Cavender Harmon on Maude and Aunt Fran Crowley Mama’s Family. She was nominated for four Emmys overall and won her only statue in 1987.

UPDATE: You can read statements from Betty White and Rue McClanahan here.
Bea Arthur, an award-winning actress of stage and television, died today in her Los Angeles home. She was 86.
Arthur, who was best known for her work on Maude and The Golden Girls, had been secretly diagnosed with cancer. Her death comes nine months after her former costar, Estelle Getty, passed away.
During her years on the small screen, the TV Academy Hall of Fame inductee collected two Emmys for her roles as Dorothy Zbornak and Maude Findlay. Her portrayal of Vera Charles in the 1966 production of Mame also earned Beatrice a Tony.
According to the star’s rep, Arthur was accompanied by family members at the time of her passing. The actress is survived by her sons and two grandchildren.

Golden Girl Estelle Getty Passes Away

UPDATE: Lifetime will be airing Sophia-centric episodes of The Golden Girls this Friday from 12-5pm.
Estelle Getty, the Emmy-award winning star from The Golden Girls, died early Tuesday at her Hollywood home. She would have turned 85 this Friday.
The actress, who also had film roles in 1985’s Mask and 1992’s Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, will probably be best remembered for her role as Sophia Petrillo on the hit NBC comedy. The show, which also produced a spinoff (The Golden Palace), ran for seven seasons.
Although Rue McClanahan, Betty White and Bea Arthur have all been seen together at various Golden Girls functions, Estelle, who had been diagnosed with advanced dementia, had been absent from the spotlight in recent years.
In a statement to Entertainment Tonight, Arthur expressed her feelings about her former co-star. “Our mother-daughter relationship was one of the greatest comic duos ever, and I will miss her.”

Golden Girls: 20 Years Later
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Cable
Omigod—it’s already been 20 years since Golden Girls first started?? That would make me… uhh.. uhh.. a Bronze girl?
To celebrate this notable milestone, Lifetime Television will be dedicating a full day to Blanche, Sophia, Dorothy and Rose. A marathon of the 20 greatest episodes will take over the channel on Friday, November 11th. The night will then be capped off with an encore presentation of the The Golden Girls Reunion. This day should be a huge ratings boon for Lifetime. The original airing of the reunion show brought the network it’s highest ratings ever for a special. If someone had told me 20 years ago that there would still be fans of St. Olaf stories in 2005, I would have thrown my chocolate milk at them.
DIE HARD FAN ALERT: You can have the opportunity to meet Rue McClanahan, Betty White and Bea Arthur in person on November 22. Visit Lifetime’s website for more information.
