Reality TV Awards Poll
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, Cable, FOX, Amazing Race, The, American Idol, Dancing With The Stars

AOL recently polled over 1.3 million readers to find out what they love and hate most about reality television.
While most of the responses were entirely predictable (Best Villain: Simon Cowell), I must say there were a few winners I didn’t see coming. (Is host Samantha Harris really worse than Julie Chen?)
Here are just some of the top vote-getters in this year’s poll:
- Best Reality Show: American Idol (33%)
- Worst Reality Show: Flavor of Love 3 (34%)
- Best Villain: Simon Cowell (39%)
- Biggest Train Wreck: The Hogans (31%)

VH1’s Surprising New Show
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Reality, Cable, Gossip
Taking a page out of A&E’s book, VH1 has reunited former pop/R&B legends Salt ‘N’ Pepa. The trio (which once included Spinderella) enjoyed mega success with hits like “What a Man,” “Push It,” and “Let’s Talk About Sex.” Then, suddenly, Salt ‘N’ Pepa vanished. In case anyone was wondering what happened to them, now you’ve got the chance.
VH1 is the esteemed power behind such shows as America’s Most Smartest Model, and don’t forget this is the cable network that brought us Flavor Flav. But don’t let that turn you off Salt ‘N’ Pepa, because you probably couldn’t avoid them even if you tried.
In a rare and surprising twist for VH1, actual musical performers (and get this-–music) are being featured on the new reality show. Some of the scenes between these former best friends are surprisingly touching and heartfelt, and viewers get a real sense of how very different these two spicy performers are. Salt is a mother and attends church, regularly performing gospel versions of her former hit songs. Pepa is also a mother but still loves being sexy, throwing herself into each performance with the energy fans once loved.
Haven’t seen the debut episode? Never fear-–VH1 is running it repeatedly, a pleasant change from shows like I Love New York and Rock of Love.

Flavor Flav Next Celeb to Receive Comedy Central Roast
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, Reality, Specials, Cable, Ratings
Really?! I mean, really… Flavor Flav is the next worthy recipient of a Comedy Central roast? Have they run out of celebs or is Flav just a great source of comedic material? According to senior vice president of specials and talent for Comedy Central, Elizabeth Porter, “We only roast the ones we love –- and the world is clearly crazy about this guy. This event will be full of surprises as Flavor Flav is going to experience a whole new kind of love in this Roast.” Um, yeah, right. Well, at any rate, I suppose they can expect excellent viewer numbers based on the uber success of his VH1 reality show, Flavor of Love. It’s certain to be an interesting event, although no specifics on who will be poking fun yet, but you can bet there will be a lot to rib Flav about. His rap and reality show experiences, including his relationship with Brigitte Nielson, as well as his massive reproduction capabilities—Flav has seven children. The Comedy Central Roast of Flavor Flav will air August 12 at 10 p.m.

I Can’t Figure Out Charm School
It’s rare that I regularly watch a show I don’t fully understand. Now, I’m not talking about “Lost,” here; I get “Lost.” Or at the very least, I get the purpose behind the show, the type of show it is, the rules of the world of the show, etc. “Lost” is a serialized drama that has sci-fi elements to it. I get “Lost.” I’m utterly befuddled by “Flavor of Love Girls Charm School.”
I’ve seen the first three episodes (and the little preview special) for “Charm School,” and … I have no idea what the show is about. They’ve taken some of the contestants from the two seasons of “Flavor of Love” and … I’m going to let VH1’s website explain it for us:
“Thirteen of your favorite breakout stars from “Flavor of Love” seasons one and two are back for some heated competition. Living as a group, learning as a group and out for themselves, these former Flavorettes will be rigorously trained in proper etiquette and manners before competing in challenges to determine their poise and grace under pressure.”

Yet Another Flavor of Love Spinoff
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite
For those of you hanging in there on VH1’s Flavor of Love spinoff, I Love New York—you’re stronger than I am. I stumble across this show from time to time, but can’t commit. And, as if one spinoff of Flav’s show isn’t enough, there’s yet another on the horizon. This time around, Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School will have 13 of Flav’s cast-offs attending (you guessed it) charm school. Mo’Nique is on board for hosting duties, putting the girls through their paces to learn proper etiquette to become well-mannered, respectable women. What’s to keep the girls in the competition, besides being on television? The grand prize is $50,000. Check in out on April 15th at 10 p.m. No doubt it will be a ratings winner like Flavor of Love and I Love New York.

“I Love New York” is a Ratings Winner for VH1
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Cable, Ratings
Move over Flavor Flav. There’s new VH1 ratings royalty in town. None other than your castoff—not once, but twice—Tiffany “New York” Pollard. That’s right, crazy as it may seem, the debut of I Love New York, the spin off of Flavor of Love, garnered the highest ratings for the network. The series premiere on Monday, January 8th had the most viewers of any other premiere on VH1. “New York” displayed so much personality on both seasons of Flavor of Love that VH1 called her in for her own series. The premise is a spin on Flavor of Love, with New York choosing from a herd of eligible bachelors. The new show has paid off for VH1, drawing 4.4 million viewers and overall earning the prize for the highest-rated cable program on Monday. The debut saw New York cutting the first five bachelors.

VH1 Big In ‘06 Awards—Big Waste?
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Award Shows, Music, Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite
I tried to watch the VH1 Big in ‘06 Awards, I really did. But I just couldn’t help thinking this was a colossal waste of time. I love awards shows as much as the next gal, but this one is completely unnecessary. But maybe that’s the point. The event kicked off with host D.L. Hughley telling a bunch of unfunny jokes at rapid fire pace, followed by the first presenters of the night—the cheerleader from Heroes and Tommy Lee. Ugh. They presented the award for Big Music Artist to Justin Timberlake, and even he seemed unexcited to be there. Next up? Backstage interviews to come courtesy of VH1’s darling, Flavor Flav. Double Ugh. That’s where they lost me. Appearances included Eva Longoria, Lance Bass, Kiefer Sutherland, Stephen Colbert, Joey Lawrence, Katharine McPhee, Masi Oka, lonelygirl15 (Jessica Rose,) and more, with a special performance by Dennis DeYoung. That’s a big “huh?” from me, but maybe Dennis DeYoung is making a comeback or something? Anyway, winners included David Hasselhoff (Big Comeback), Britney Spears (Big Mama), Stephen Colbert (Big Breakthrough), Janelle Pierzina (Big Reality Star, Big Brother All-Stars), Katharine McPhee (Big IT Girl), Kiefer Sutherland (Big TV Star).

Flavor of Love 2 Big Ratings Winner for VH1
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Cable, Ratings
I actually had to read the article twice about Flavor of Love 2—as in, did I just read that Flavor Flav’s finale show has earned the biggest audience ever for VH1? It’s true. Unbelievably true. I’m not sure if anyone reading this has ever seen this show, but to me, it’s just terrible. Maybe the ratings come from that “can’t take my eyes off of this trainwreck” feeling. I can only imagine that’s what it is. I can tolerate a lot of reality shows, but this one is unbearable to me. I’ve flipped past it a couple of times and lingered for about two minutes, including last night’s finale where he made his ultimate choice. Wow. I don’t want to offend anyone, but I can actually feel IQ points dropping when I watch it. So I watched about five minutes of it last night and those are five minutes of my life that I can never get back. But enough about me.
Flavor of Love 2 had 7.5 million viewers. I know… it’s not a typo. That makes it the most watched program ever on VH1 and the number one cable show for the evening. Among the 18-49 set, Flavor of Love was the top-rated non-sports show on cable for 2006. Seems Flav has found his niche—after appearing on The Surreal Life, Strange Love (with Brigitte Nielsen) and two runs of Flavor of Love—he is the darling of VH1. Go figure.
Oh, and by the way, he picked “Deelishis” in the final episode.
