How Does the White House Do Iron Chef?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Food & Home, Prime Time, Reality, Cable, Gossip

One of the Food Network’s most intense cooking competitions will soon move to Washington, D.C. Address: 1600 Pennsylvania. First Lady Michelle Obama has invited Iron Chef America to compete in the House’s kitchens, featuring ingredients from the property’s own vegetable garden.
In the episode, Mrs. Obama will take over the Chairman’s responsibility of unveiling the secret ingredient. The chefs to be featured on the episode include Bobby Flay, Mario Batali and Emeril Lagasse. White House chef Cristeta Comerford will also compete. The biggest disappointment of this - and really, it’s a great idea - is the fact that Morimoto won’t be featured. Bummer.

Food Network’s Next Big Reality Twist
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Food & Home, Prime Time, Reality, Cable, Gossip, Video
Imagine how delighted seven seasons’ worth of contestants would be if Simon Cowell stepped onto the Idol stage to sing - and, subsequently, be judged. On Season 2 of Food Network’s The Next Iron Chef, a hard-to-please judge will most certainly be on the set…but not to offer her critique.
Starting Sunday, Chopped‘s Amanda Freitag will be stepping out from behind the big table to stand under the harsh glare of criticism herself. Freitag is bucking to be The Next Iron Chef, the second the series has picked through reality TV competition. Michael Symon was the first to win the honor; he has gone on to enjoy a 7-2-1 winning record in Kitchen Stadium.

Food Network’s Chef Jeff Project Comes to a Close
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Reality, Cable, Editorial

After six episodes and five weeks, Food Network’s ambitious Chef Jeff Project ended Sunday night. The season finale offered up everything viewers wanted to see, a delectable combination of food, drama and happy endings. If this delicious reality dish has any flaws, it’s that the season was too short and no reunion show is being presented next week.
The project all began with chef Jeff Henderson, who served hard time for selling drugs. During his incarceration, Henderson began to learn the culinary arts. Food led him to success, and today Henderson is a well-known and award-winning cook - not to mention budding reality star. His happy experiences with food led to the Chef Jeff Project, an inspiring plan to pull six young adults out of the ghetto and into an upper-class catering business.

Food Network Star in the Making: Chef Jeff Project
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Reality, Cable, Editorial
I’ll admit it - I gave a little eye-roll when I saw the first promo. Chef in the kitchen mentors six young ‘uns, talking about a “life-changing experience.” Sounds like the usual reality show hype, right? But after the fourth promo, my appetite was whet. So I set the DVR. And I watched the Chef Jeff Project. It’s about to become the biggest thing on the entire Food Network - it’s a good idea to start paying attention now.
Jeff Henderson, one-time guest on Good Morning America and author of “Chef Jeff Cooks,” is the driving force behind the Project. He’s definitely got the kitchen cred - he’s served as executive chef to both the Café Bellagio and Caesar’s Palace, and now owns the up-and-coming Posh Urban Cuisine. But Chef Jeff isn’t your average culinary connoisseur, because he’s also got the street cred.
Jeff Henderson spent almost ten years behind bars for pushing cocaine in and around his hometown, South Central L.A. For his inspiring Project, Henderson installed six inner-city kids into his upscale catering business, hiring them on as employees.

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Drama, Food & Home, Games, Prime Time, Reality, Sci-Fi/Horror, Specials, ABC, Bravo, Cable, FOX, MTV, NBC, The CW, Lost, So You Think You Can Dance

(You can view TV Envy’s Summer Television Programming Schedule here.)
MONDAY (5/26)
- American Gladiators (NBC, 8pm): “A tree climber tries to rise above a SWAT officer.” If tree boy gets a chance at the wall, his opponent will have no choice but to gas him.
- Flavor of Love 3 (VH1, 9pm): “The cast of Season 3 reunites.” I often wonder what a sober Brigitte Nielsen thinks about this.
- Denise Richards: It’s Complicated (E!, 10pm): “Denise goes on a blind date with a so-called regular guy.” When you’re getting alimony and child support from your celebrity ex, you can afford to go out with “regular guys”.
- Living Lohan (E!, 10:30): The title of the tonight’s premiere is “Mommy Will Fix It.” I hope she’s referring to Ali’s hair.

The End of Emeril Lagasse?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Food & Home, Reality, Cable, News
The Food Network was hardly more than a blip on cable when it began in 1993, with chefs like Bobby Flay, Mario Batali and Emeril Lagasse rounding out the programming. Batali and the network have since parted ways, and now Emeril Live is coming to the end of its reign.
Live, which began 10 years ago, quickly brought attention to the little-known network and turned the host into a household name. Although the show stops production on December 11, 2007, Lagasse will still be part of the Food Network family. The Essence of Emeril will continue to air and while the chef himself - who’s still working on new ideas - will remain on hand to take part in food-related specials and shows.

New ‘Iron Chef’ Joins Cooking Ranks
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Food & Home, Prime Time, Reality, Cable, Gossip
It all started with an article in the New York Post. First, they reported that Iron Chef and Food Network darling Mario Batali (of Molto Mario fame) was being kicked off the network, stripped of his Iron Chef rank and forced to watch as none of his shows were renewed for another season. Next, they reported that Batali would still be seen on the network from time to time, perhaps. Now, Batali has teamed with none other than Gwyneth Paltrow (how did that happen?) to host a new cooking show for American Public TV.
Batali’s departure left a hole in Food Network’s Iron Chef America, sparking an eight-episode search for the Next Iron Chef. Sunday night, under the watchful eye of the remaining Iron Chefs (Bobby Flay, Cat Cora and Masaharu Morimoto – my favorite) and the chairman, chefs John Besh and Michael Symon competed under the klieg lights of Kitchen Stadium. The mission? Make five course in 60 minutes. The secret ingredient? Swordfish.

Rachael Ray’s Search for a Top Chef
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Daytime, Food & Home, Prime Time, Talk Shows, Cable, Syndication
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again—Rachael Ray has “accessible” all sewn up. Really, can you think of any other television personality that is as all-around accepted as Rachael Ray? Even if you’re not a big fan of hers, there is no denying that she is on the fast track to fame. And it’s all because she just has that nice girl, easy-going vibe that so many people connect with. Heck, even my kids look forward to watching her cooking show on Food Network. I could do without her many abbreviations and terms (“EVOO” and “Yummo” come to mind), but I watch her shows and have one of her cookbooks. I’m not a big fan of her talk show because she just seems like she’s whacked out on caffeine or something. It’s too hyper for me. Anyway, she’s looking for the next great chef, er… well, cook in her search called “So You Think You Can Cook?” on her talk show. According to Ray, “We just want to give a person — a real person, not a chef or somebody specially trained to do this for a living — a shot at showing everybody their personality and how much fun you can have with food.” Seems that’s a recipe that Ray can relate to, as she’s never had any formal training and has built her empire largely on her personality. She and show producers will whittle the cooks down to five, then they go through the rigors of two weeks of competition before the winner is crowned in November. And, what does the winner take away from this? The lucky cook gets to co-host Rachael Ray’s show (just for a day) and will receive training at a U.S. culinary institute. Also, one of their recipes will be in her magazine, Every Day With Rachael Ray.

Childhood Obesity Documentary From Al Roker
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Cable, Cable/Satellite
Al Roker knows a thing or two about being a heavy kid, having to shop in the husky section for clothing. We’re all more than familiar with grown up and overweight Roker and his 2002 gastric bypass surgery to drop weight. He’s now hoping to draw more attention to the childhood obesity problem with a new documentary on the Food Network. Childhood Obesity: Danger Zone will air on Saturday at 9:00 p.m. According to Roker, “If you run the numbers out, this would be the first generation that has a shorter life span than their parents. That’s scary.” The rate of childhood obesity is staggering, with more than 12 million kids with weight problems that pose serious health risks. The documentary will look at some kids who were able to gain control of their weight. There are a number of factors for kids’ expanding waist lines, including fast food, sedentary kids, junk food, and a lack of physical education in some schools.
