Fringe Gets Full Season Order

FringeAfter four weeks of impressive numbers, FOX has gone ahead and made it official: is now being given a full season.

Since premiering last month, the J.J. Abrams series has shown improvement from week to week. Not including the large spike on the night of House‘s debut, the show has grown steadily from 9 million to 9.9 million viewers.

The network’s “back nine” order makes Fringe the second fall show to be extended. Last week, CW requested a full season of 90210.

Do Not Disturb Becomes First Fall Cancellation

Do Not Disturb

Well, at least this will give Jerry O’Connell time to focus on becoming a new father.

After only three episodes. FOX’s Do Not Disturb has become the first casualty of the fall season. The show - which was only watched by only 3.5 million this Wednesday - has already been pulled off the schedule. As of October 1, the network will air a one hour block of ’Til Death (1 original, 1 repeat) for the time being.

While it’s doubtful the show would have succeeded in any circumstance (the producers already acknowledged that the first episode was simply “bad television"), the series never stood a chance during its assigned time slot. Seriously - did FOX honestly think a freshman program could survive against Criminal Minds, Private Practice and Project Runway?

Kiefer Sutherland on 24We should have known the show was troubled when they decided to bring Kim back

Even though the writers of were given extra time to craft a new season, production on the show will be halted for nearly three weeks starting September 15. (Filming will resume October 9.) The program’s executive producer told Entertainment Weekly this creative pause was needed to perfect the ending.

“We had a couple of scripts that we weren’t happy with. We just couldn’t get this direction to work, and we found another one that we liked better, so we wound up retooling it,” Howard Gordon stated.

While this news may be upsetting to impatient 24 fans - the show was already pushed back a year thanks to the writers’ strike - the delay will supposedly not affect the drama’s start date. Since eight episodes were already in the can before the last work stoppage, production was already ahead of schedule.

Day 7 of 24 will premiere sometime in January. Until then, a two-hour prequel will air on November 23.

Is American Idol Nearing Its End?

Nigel LythgoeAlthough much was made of ’s ratings dip last season, it’s hard to criticize a show that produces numbers any program would kill for. On it’s worst day, Idol could still easily beat anything currently offered. But does that mean the series is still water cooler television?

Well, based on the recent turnout in Puerto Rico - maybe it isn’t. On August 2nd, the producers took the auditions over to the U.S. territory for the first time in eight seasons. Where best to find the next Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez or Ricky Martin? And while it’s still possible the next winner was discovered on that island, the judges only had a total of 300 to choose from. Yes, only 300 showed up to the San Juan auditions. (I doubt the crowd even filled one section of Coliseo de Puerto Rico.) If can somehow skirt around the pathetic sight during Season 8, he’ll have totally earned his paycheck for the year.
