Cavemen Not Extinct Yet

Highly talked about through the summer, ABC’s Cavemen got off to a pretty good start on Tuesday, a night of the week that’s already filled with stiff competition. The premiere scored 9 million viewers, a far cry from the huge numbers of FOX’s House, but enough to keep the show going for a few more episodes. Cavemen earned enough viewers to become the second most-watched show in its time slot, highly impressive for a show that was spawned through a series of popular TV commercials. Critics bashed the pilot episode, which was not shown for the Tuesday premiere, and advertisers weren’t eager to get involved. ABC ended up selling thirty-second spots for a mere $100,000. Nine million viewers say the Geico-inspired Cavemen are entertaining enough for them, giving ABC the right to drum up prices and thumb network noses in the face of criticism and competition.

Geico Cavemen Get a New Sitcom
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, ABC
The ink is barely dry on the contract that Bill Martin and Mike Schiff (Grounded for Life creators) signed with ABC Television Studios, but work is already going full steam ahead on a new sitcom starring Geico’s cavemen. That’s right, the commercial concept has become so popular in mainstream culture it’s comedic value can no longer be ignored by network TV, a group determined to cash in on Geico’s advertising success. The two-year deal signed with ABC gives Martin and Schiff seven-figures and a third season option. The new sitcom will focus on a group of three Neanderthal Men living in today’s Atlanta, trying to adjust to a Cro-Magnon world. Martin and Schiff are no strangers to such a sitcom setup – they served as executive producers and showrunners for NBC’s 3rd Rock From the Sun in the past.

Cavemen Get Their Own Series
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, ABC, Rumors
If you watch those Geico cavemen commercials and get a huge chuckle out of them, then this one’s for you. ABC will actually be making a comedy series out of the cavemen characters, written by the guy behind the caveman ads. Joe Lawson is an advertising copywriter who created the cavemen situations for the Geico ads, as well as the gecko that is synonymous with Geico. With the momentum of the cavemen ads, it seems like this little comedy may actually have legs. I mean, we’ve all seen the ads, and most people enjoy them. How will it translate to a half hour of comedy though? That’s the real question. Gotta love those guys in 30 or 60 second installments, but a half hour? The series will look at three cave-dudes who live in modern-day Atlanta. The guys who star in the commercials, Jeff Daniel Phillips and Ben Weber, have not been confirmed to play the roles in the comedy.
