The 61st Primetime Emmy Awards
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Animation, Award Shows, Comedy, Drama, Late Night, Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Cable, CBS, FX, FOX, HBO, NBC, Showtime, 30 Rock, 24, Amazing Race, The, American Idol, ER, Family Guy, Lost, Saturday Night Live, Survivor, Features

Could the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards be another year for firsts?
Around this same time last September, the execs of basic cable were thrilled to see one of their own finally win the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series (Mad Men). Meanwhile, producers of reality fare saw an award given to one of their hosts (Jeff Probst). So which other category could be covered during this round? Animation.
For the first time since 1961 (when The Flintstones were still on air), an animated program has been nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series. So will Family Guy finally go where The Simpsons has never gone before? Not if the six other contenders have anything to say about it!
So who won? Who lost? Which funnyman took home the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor since Jeremy Piven wasn’t even nominated? Read our West Coast play-by-play account of this evening’s telecast and find out!

You gotta hand it to Jennifer Love Hewitt. Personal troubles won’t keep that girl down. Ghost Whisperer‘s numbers helped give CBS a double-win on Friday night.

The 60th Primetime Emmy Awards
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Award Shows, Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, ABC, Cable, FX, HBO, Entourage, Editorial, Features

Even though the previous television season was marred by the annoying writers’ strike, I find myself really excited for the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards. Not only will this ceremony give us a chance to start anew, it’ll be the academy’s chance to celebrate what’s new.
Tonight, two basic cable shows (Damages, Mad Men) will get a chance to win for Outstanding Drama Series. (That would be an Emmy first.) Meanwhile, nominees in several categories will have an opportunity to compete in a Sopranos-less environment. An added bonus? A new category. This year, reality show hosts will finally be acknowledged for their programming contributions as well.
So who won? Who lost? Who ran up and grabbed the award even though they didn’t win? Read our West Coast play-by-play account of this evening’s telecast and find out!

This Week on TV (4/21-4/27)

(You can view TV Envy’s Post-Strike Television Schedule here.)
MONDAY (4/21)
- Gossip Girl (CW, 8pm): New episode. “A dethroned Blair musters up the strength to head back to school, and Jenny tries to keep up with the financial demands of the in-crowd.” Mondays are always better when other people are miserable.
- Deal or No Deal (NBC, 8pm): George Bush provides support to a war vet going for the million. After three tours in Iraq, the President figured it was the least he could do.
- How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 8:30): If you can’t handle the thought of humming a tune about sandcastles over and over again, this might not be the episode for you.
- The Bachelor: London (ABC, 10pm): “Matt accompanies Amanda, Chelsea, Noelle and Shayne to their hometowns.” Being allowed to live in the U.S. takes more than just a sham marriage. It means faking it with her family too.

Celine Dion: That’s Just The Woman In Me
Posted by Jacci Lewis Categories: Music, Prime Time, Specials, CBS, Editorial
When it comes to singer Celine Dion, most people fall into one of two categories: the ‘It’s the soundtrack of my life’ group or the ‘Please God, make it stop…MAKE IT STOP’ group. There is a third, smaller category of people though who don’t care one way or another about her music but just enjoy how delightfully, over-the-top cheesy she is. (There is a reason certain celebrities are satirized on Saturday Night Live.)
Friday night CBS aired Dion’s one-hour primetime special, Celine Dion: That’s Just The Woman In Me. The show was taped in front of a live audience at Los Angeles’ Wiltern Theatre back on January 12. It was the 5-time Grammy winner’s first concert since wrapping up her 5-year run in Las Vegas.
The title of Celine Dion’s new album, Taking Chances, describes the show fairly well. It was a one hour mix of glitzy dance numbers, power ballads, celebrity duets and cameos, a somewhat staged Q&A session and heck, even an appearance by one of the stars of High School Musical!
The opening act featured Dion in a sparkly, gold mini-dress in a very Vegas-esque song and dance routine. Her dancing features a lot of little kicks and chest pounding motions. One might describe it as spastic. One might even question why such an accomplished singer needs to be part of such an over-choreographed dance routine. But something about Celine Dion’s sincerity makes the whole scary scene a bit more forgivable.
