Simon Cowell: American Idol’s Disrespectful Judge?

American Idol: Simon Cowell and Paula AbdulThere are very few viewers who feel ambivalent on the subject of Simon Cowell. The fans either absolutely love him and accept his word as gospel, or they utterly despise him and everything he says. It’s a love/hate thing, and some days Cowell makes us loathe him…other days, we just have to adore him. But there are some who think the famously plainspoken judge takes his penchant for criticism a bit too far, and in fact the acid-tongued critic has come under the gun with the press more than once.

Now, MSNBC is calling   out for his “disrespectful” behavior, saying the judge is “utterly indifferent and bored.” His behavior? It’s “increasingly appalling.”

Or, if you’re on the opposite side of the issue, one of the rare bright spots during performance and elimination nights.

Last week, as has happened on many such weeks, and Simon Cowell dissolved into a fit of squabbling at the judges’ table. Cowell has always delighted in discomfiting Ms. Abdul, who is obviously easily driven off-course. But after Scott MacIntyre’s performance, Paula was wide awake and for once quite ready for Cowell’s criticism. She whipped out props and delivered a funny line that even broke Simon up in hysterics.

American Idol 8: Hollywood Week Continues

American Idol Judges in Hollywood

Seventy-two hopefuls crowded the Kodak Theater for their solo performances in front of the judges. For this all-important audition, the very last they’ll have on Idol, the singers were allowed to sing with the band, their own back-up singers and instruments of their own choosing. The show began with the judge deliberation, showing them scattering photos around their table. The day’s events were re-told, flashback style, for our amusement.

The solo singing started with , who has already completely impressed me with his amazing voice. Lambert put so much power into “Believe,” a song choice which should have been terribly strange and awkward, I was absolutely stunned. I thought this guy was a David Cook rip-off in the beginning, but now I’m not so sure he isn’t a complete original.

Matt Giraud lovingly played piano as he sang “Georgia” by Ray Charles. He put a ton of soul into the performance, winning a standing ovation from the watching crowd.

Kara DioGuardi

The premiere of ’s Season 8 is now only days away, and everyone’s trying to get the scoop before the show airs. So what does the reality show’s newest judge have to say about her first season with the show?

, along with the other judges in the panel, has been doing the promotional blitz in the weeks leading up to the show. But DioGuardi is one of the biggest stories of the year - she’s the one who’s new. “I hope people find I bring something to the show that’s different, and I can help these contestants learn something, whether they win or not,” she recently told reporters.

Many are honing in on the fact that DioGuardi will now share a unique position with longtime Idol judge . The latter is no longer the sole female on the panel, but does that mean we can expect catfights? “I’ve never been of the thinking that women should drag each other down,” DioGuardi said. “There’s definitely times Paula and I voice our opinion and it’s of the same ilk,” she admitted. “But it’s all fun. Nobody’s going back to their room crying.”

Ah, but will anyone run off the stage crying? That’s what we’re all waiting to see.
