Awkward TV: Kate Gosselin and Regis Philbin

I’m not sure what’s more painful to watch—Jon Gosselin going through a midlife crisis or making uneducated statements (again).

During a pre-taped interview with , Philbin openly admitted that he was not a follower of Jon & Kate Plus Eight. Although that reveal should have immediately disqualified him from the conversation, the Live with Regis and Kelly host then proceeded to add his two cents to the divorce matter.

An Open Letter to Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa

Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa

Dear Regis and Kelly,

I have something I really need to get off my chest. Even though I continue to watch on a fairly regular basis (usually out of habit), I find myself increasingly more annoyed as the days go by.

You can call me bitter and jealous all you want, but this is something I’ve been bothered by long before the economy started to tank. The current climate has only made it worse.

Earlier this week, I flipped on your program while Regis was talking about the AIG bonuses. Kelly followed that up with a story about a group of teachers who opted to take a 5% pay cut to help save their coworkers. That discussion then led to an unnecessary confession from Regis: He recently took a pay cut as well. (Uhh - did he want us to pat him on the back?) When the topic was redirected back to Kelly, she then joked, “Some of us don’t need a pay cut!”

The Lohan vs. Cooper Battle Continues

Anderson CooperEarlier this week on Live with Regis and Kelly, guest host Anderson Cooper offered his unedited opinions about the “train wreck” also known as Living Lohan. (You can view that hilarious segment here.)

In addition to calling the Lohan clan “horrific people,” he said that Ali Lohan was “allegedly a 14-year-old girl” who “looks to be about 60.” (For the record, I completely agree with that remark.)

And as Cooper had predicted, it didn’t take long before Dina Lohan offered her response to the journalist’s comments. (After all, that’s how she makes her money. She picks up the phone and makes sure statements are retracted.) Later that day, the mama bear told OK! that the “cruel” anchor would get it in the end. “This is bad karma for him.”

More Reasons Why Regis Philbin Should Retire

A few months ago, I listed 8 reasons why I thought Regis Philbin should start making his retirement plans. Now I would like to add a #9 and #10.

#9. Back in May, the talk show host was talking about the recent American Idol finale when he said, “What happened to the past winners? Where are they today?”  When told by co-host that they come on their show “all the time,” Regis responded, “Really? I haven’t noticed.”

#10. Philbin, who actually went to the premiere of yesterday evening, sadly referenced Heath Ledger as ‘Keith Ledger’. (You can see that clip from today’s show below.)

David Cook Going Off the Singles’ Market?

David CookSeventh season winner David Cook won hearts with his edgy look and sound, gaining notice early for his self confidence and unique stylings. But this single guy may not stay that way for much longer.

Last week, enjoyed a dinner date with second Idol season competitor Kimberly Caldwell (eliminated in seventh place). Don’t remember the name? You might also recognize Kim as the bubbly blonde who hosts on the TV Guide channel, notably the show Idol Tonight (a series dedicated to breaking down Idol performances and interviewing contestants). Cook recently told Regis and Kelly that “we’ll probably hang out again.” (You can see video of the two of them together after the jump.)

Don’t worry ladies, one date does not a committed guy make. You might still have a chance.

Signs It Might Be Time for Regis Philbin to Retire

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Daytime, Talk Shows, ABC, Editorial

Regis Philbin, Kelly Ripa and David Letterman

After endless hours of daytime television viewing, I have come to an unfortunate conclusion: needs to start planning his retirement. (At least from non-scripted fare.)

Although I do still regularly watch , Philbin’s frequent errors simply make me cringe. While he has the charm to pull some of them off, I sometimes wonder if he has any idea what he’s talking about at all.  If it wasn’t for Ripa’s amazing ability to overlook senior moments, her co-host would often come off looking quite sad.

Letterman to Appear on Regis & Kelly

David Letterman In one of those rare talk show appearances, Letterman will grace the stage of Live with Regis & Kelly for Reege’s triumphant return following heart surgery. Letterman’s guest appearance shows his continuing friendship with Regis, who filled in when Letterman was out with shingles in 2003. Regis was also the first guest booked on Late Night after Letterman returned from a quintuple-bypass surgery. Regis returns to his gabfest on Thursday, just six weeks after a triple-bypass heart surgery. Their ticker problems are not all the hosts have in common—they also share a doctor, since Dr. O. Wayne Isom performed both of their surgeries. Philbin’s return seems speedy, but it’s likely that fans have been missing him after the multitude of fill-in hosts. Regis returns just in time for May sweeps… after all, the show must go on!
