American Idol 8: Louisville Auditions

Louisville auditions

held their Louisville auditions at the famous Churchill Downs racetrack, known for the Kentucky Derby, great hats and mint juleps. The track officially opened in 1875, and it’s been a Louisville mainstay ever since.

Louisville, by the way, is pronounced by most Kentucky natives thusly: Loo-uh-vull. This city is not pronounced, as seems to think, as Looey-ville. Nor it is called Loo-iss-ville. The s is silent and there’s no long e sound - unless you are a Yankee. Outsiders like to say the state is somehow divided over the pronunciation issue. This is not the case - we’re just good-natured enough to poke a bit of fun at those who are. Say it with me, now - Loo-uh-vull.

But I digress. The show opened not with a Louisville native but a Cincinnati girl named Tiffany Shedd. This bleach blonde wore too much make-up and sang abominably. Her very long exit scene was punctuated with rage. We can’t all be singers.

A Town Without TV

It all started Sunday morning. I woke up hearing these terrible noises outside - banging, howling, whistling and scraping. “What’s that!” I cried in alarm.

“Just the wind,” I was answered by the person who lives with me.

Well then, no big deal. Or so I thought.

The power went out while I was taking my wake-up shower. The lights had already flicked several times, so surely this was only a temporary inconvenience.

As my home started to grow hotter and hotter (no power means no air conditioning also), we had to find ways to entertain ourselves. The battery in my laptop lasted only two hours, and we found ourselves still in the heat with no entertainment relief.

The VCR (yes, I still have one) would not work. No video games could be played. It didn’t matter that we have one thousand channels, for none of them could be accessed. We played cards instead, then moved on to the board games.

Follow The ‘Ghost Hunters’ This Halloween

Ghost Hunters Jason and GrantEver wonder how real life conduct their paranormal investigations? At-home viewers can tag along with Jason, Grant and the team from TAPS this Halloween as they investigate Waverly Manor in Louisville, Kentucky. It’s called one of the most haunted places on Earth, and it’s my hometown.

The original series Ghost Hunters debuted in October 2004, taking a cynical approach to a business that’s usually filled with mediums and psychics. Jason and Grant, founders of TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) do not claim to have special talents or an affinity for the dead. They are simply plumbers for Roto Rooter, men who set out to debunk and disprove claims of paranormal activity. Using technical equipment and sharp eyes, the Ghost Hunters do their best to prove that places are not haunted.
