Presidents and Prime Time: Don’t They Mix?

President George W. BushDespite big banner headlines and lots of flag-waving pictures, the must-touted visit from President to NBC’s Deal or No Deal didn’t help ratings. In fact, the show met it’s lowest ratings ever for a Monday broadcast despite the promise of the Commander-in-Chief.

Bush offered a taped message for an Iraq War veteran (Captain Joseph Kobes, U.S. Army) on the episode, though only 10 million viewers actually saw the footage. The presidential vote of confidence didn’t help Kobes win the million - in the end, the solider was stuck with a lowly $26,000 which was in turn tripled to $78,000 thanks to the Deal Wheel.

“I’m thrilled to be on with you tonight,” President Bush told his audience. “Come to think of it, I’m thrilled to be anywhere with high ratings these days.” Joke’s on you, Mr. President. Next time, try an appearance on Gossip Girl - that show is getting much better press.

FOX Moves Canterbury’s Law

Canterbury's LawEven though I predicted ER would outlast Canterbury’s Law, I didn’t the latter’s demise would come so soon.

To be fair, the FOX show hasn’t yet been cancelled—but it’s really just a matter of time.  After a few disappointing turns in it’s regular time slot, the network has already chosen to make a few adjustments.

Come this Monday, repeats of House will immediately fill the 8pm time slot once filled by .  The Julianna Margulies program will then be relegated to the TV wasteland (otherwise known as Fridays @ 9pm) effective March 28. 

Unfortunately, Canterbury‘s new time slot will only guarantee the show a slow death.  It’s lead-in, , has also proven to be a ratings dud.

Post-Strike Television Schedule

Now that we have come to the end of the , it’s time to once again update our television programming schedules.

Mid-season replacements have had seen their debuts shuffled (e.g. New Amsterdam), some programs are coming back with new episodes (e.g. Scrubs, 30 Rock) while other shows aren’t slated to return until next year (Pushing Daisies).

Here you can find a compilation of the 2008 post-strike schedules for the five major networks.  I would highly recommend printing this out since there are major changes across the board.

Two notes:

  1. This is the updated schedule as of May 6.  Be prepared to see more changes and settling in the weeks to come.
  2. The list consists of premieres and dates for new episodes.
  3. If a particular time slot/network is not mentioned, either nothing has changed or no specific announcement has been made yet.

CNN: In it for the Long Haul

Barack ObamaCable news network will try something never-before-seen for this year’s exciting election coverage: they’re going to squeeze all the fun out of it with consecutive forty-hour live coverage. And you thought they couldn’t possibly make poll results more uninteresting.

February’s “Super Tuesday” is the event. Coverage begins at six in the morning Feb. 5, when polls open in more than twenty states. The coverage ends at 11 pm the following Wednesday. Results of the polls won’t even be available until well into the evening of Feb. 5, but that’s not stopping CNN. Meanwhile, the network will show live coverage of candidates through the weekend, including debates. It’s all the politics you can stand, complete with tired TV anchors and plenty of pretty poll graphs. But don’t let’s get too far ahead of ourselves…the White House isn’t empty yet.

So that no one forgets we still have a President in office, will preempt network programming this coming Monday night for an hour-and-a-half-long State of the Union address. I always have a bad feeling when one of these occurs, fearful as always that the US is about to declare war on yet another country. But who knows? Maybe he’s just going to give us all health care instead of going to war. That’ll be that day.

WWE RAW Reflections (12/3)

Jericho and Orton face offWWE Monday Night RAW opens with “Y2J” Chris Jericho in the ring doing his whole “me want title shot” schtick. Jericho replays the video of WWE Champion Randy Orton accepting Jericho’s challenge for Armageddon. Orton comes out and it’s pretty much more of the same. The two get in each others faces - threat, threat, threat - and it almost comes to blows. Of course, Regal comes out and stops them. Orton and Jericho will pick each other’s opponents for the night. It would make sense for them to make Jericho face Flair. Now, that would be a good match. Instead, Jericho will face Umaga. Orton will face off against Shawn Michaels. Not bad main events!

After the jump, three WWE legends and an “Attitude Era” tag team make surprise “returns”!

  • (TNT, 8pm):  The special two-hour holiday episode brings Brenda’s parents into the investigative fold.  Nothing says Christmas like talking blood with your blood.
  • (NBC, 9pm):  (NOTE:  This is the last new episode left.)  ‘Peter squares off against former friends thanks to Adam’s confusing story about the Shanti virus.’  He shouldn’t fault Adam; the confusing storyline is to blame.
  • (FOX, 9pm):  ‘Boulet and Cobb investigate an insurance adjuster’s murder.’  As if there weren’t enough people in New Orleans with a motive.
  • (NBC, 10pm): (First half of the two-parter; 2nd half airs Wednesday).  ‘Evidence points to Reese’s father in the murders that sent Crews to prison.’  I’m guessing this won’t be resolved anytime soon…otherwise, we wouldn’t have a show.

  • Prison Break (FOX, 8pm):  ‘Lechero reveals a secret buried beneath Sona.’  He’s been linked to the hatch this whole time. (NOTE:  This will be the last new Prison episode until Jan. 14th.)
  • Heroes (NBC, 9pm):  ‘The calendar turns back four months.’  Does this mean the writers still have a chance to redo this whole season?
  • (CBS, 9pm):  ‘Charlie finds success as a children’s singing star.’  He becomes The Wiggles’ new green-shirted guy.
  • (ABC, 10pm):  This is their opportunity to make up for any embarrassing moments they didn’t have a chance to create.

**NBC will devote this whole week to the environment and inject something ‘green’ into all their shows.  To enjoy it, we must turn on our TVs.**

MONDAY (11/5)
**Special times for the ABC lineup tonight; Dancing With The Stars runs until 9:45 (pushing everything else 15 minutes late).**

  • Prison Break (FOX, 8pm):  Two-hour episode.  Michael finally learns that Sara has been murdered tonight.  I’m curious to see how steely his eyes can get.
  • Everybody Hates Chris (CW, 8pm):  ‘When Chris joins the writing staff of the school newspaper, he makes up a story about a serial killer that causes a panic in the community.’  This is what people get when they don’t pay for a real newspaper.
  • How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 8pm):  ‘Marshall learns Lily’s dirty little financial secret when he and she decide to buy an apartment.’  As Suze Orman would say: “If he didn’t realize how many pairs of shoes she had, he’s equally to blame.”
  • The Big Bang Theory (CBS, 8:30pm):  ‘The guys ask Penny to join their ‘Halo’ team.’  The only time boys ask me to play Halo is when they need someone to kill.
