Programming Changes for The Weather Channel

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Prime Time, Cable, News, Video

MTV started showing everything but music videos. TLC began giving us household drama (what can we learn from that…avoid family life?). Discovery began airing its own original game show. Now, The Weather Channel is going to start showing movies.

Anything can happen on cable, people.

Of course, the network plans to stick to its main theme by showing flicks which largely feature - what else? - weather phenomenon. Beginning this Friday, TWC will have a movie night. First on deck is the flick A Perfect Storm.

March of the Penguins, Deep Blue Sea and Misery (well, you can only stay on theme up to a certain point) are also on the network’s programming roster.

American Idol 8: Ode to the Movies

Quentin Tarantino

Next week, ’s lucky seven will sing songs from cinema. In other words, buckle up for some show tunes, Idol watchers.

will act as a mentor to the Idols, a role for which he’ll surely draw on his movie-making expertise to help the singers convey the right emotions. I’m imagining a night filled with Hollywood classics from movies like My Fair Lady, West Side Story and The Music Man. It’s much more likely I’ll hear tunes from The Jonas Brothers’ latest flick. But, alas, not all things are perfect.

Performances from Disney darling and Jennifer Hudson will be featured during the Top 7 results show to celebrate movie week.

I Confess: I Love Old Teen Idols

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Reality, Cable, MTV, Gossip, Rumors, Video

I usually shy away from reality projects featuring Scott Baio (not falling for that one again), but I just may have to make an exception for VH1. The network will soon be premiering its brand-new Confessions of a Teen Idol, which features seven former hotties who all share the same mission: grab the brass ring.

You know, again.

They each had their shot at fame and some even spent a little time at the top. But Hollywood is capricious, and soon enough all of these men found themselves on the swift path to being has-beens. But VH1 - and apparently, - thinks they could be shining stars once more. Or at the very least, reality stars. Here’s the funniest part: Baio is part host, part mentor to these would-be famous-again celebs.

I know, it’s a total riot.

South Park’s Last Hurrah: A Big Screen Sequel

South Park

When Trey Parker and Matt Stone decide to pull the plug on , they won’t quietly fade from the scene with a single half-hour TV stint. These two comedy masters will say good-bye in a way the fans can appreciate (and spend a lot more money on): with another big-screen version of the show.

Don’t worry, avid Park fans, the show isn’t scheduling to end itself anytime soon. Parker and Stone are signed on with Comedy Central until 2011, at which time they may or may not decide to renew their contract.

“We talked about maybe some day doing a movie to sort of end it all, and that seems like the best idea,” said Parker to the press recently. “That’s been a big thought, to do the last show as a movie.”

DirecTV Out of Line With Newest Ad?

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Commercials, Gossip, Video

DirecTV logoWe giggled when Christopher Lloyd talked about the future of DirecTV for a commercial spot. We laughed when Kathy Bates and William Shatner joined the fray. We ogled Baywatch-era Pam Anderson tout the service for her spot. We fell over in hysterics when we saw the Scooby Doo advertisement. But now, DirecTV may have twisted the funny bone of some viewers a little too hard. Their latest ad, just another in a long string of past pop culture references, has inspired some pretty heated controversy.

The ads were drawing attention even before the campaign hit the fan. Using the same actors and scenes but different lines, the service has promoted itself as an alternative to cable by putting us once again back in our favorite movie moments - as if to prove that the second time around really can be better than the first with DirecTV. They’re funny, they’re clever and they’re working. Er…they were.

Lindsay Lohan Going Small Screen…for Good?

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Prime Time, ABC, Gossip

Lindsay Lohan will soon make potential waves when she appears on Ugly Betty. In fact, TV could become a new career for this former party girl. As things stand, she doesn’t have a whole lot going on with her Hollywood career path.

Earlier Lohan news touted the actress’s involvement with Manson Girls, a much-anticipated flick about the serial killer, and Ye Old Times, a Jack Black comedy. The latest news reports, however, claim that Lohan is no longer involved with either project.

One report says Lohan was dropped from Girls when no other high-profile actress would work with her, but Lindsay’s people claim “scheduling conflicts” were the cause. Making a guest appearance on a sitcom takes a lot of time, people.

Lindsay Lohan will actually make an appearance in six episodes of Betty, which could lead to something more concrete in television. The lighthearted family fun of sitcoms may be just the thing to restore Lohan’s image in the public eye, and hopefully the rest of her career.

Could the Writers Strike Really Be Ending?

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Award Shows, News

Writers Strike photoThe has just dropped two of their demands: proposals to unionize and writers. This brings us all right back to the central issue: Internet and new-media revenue. By the Guild’s own admission, this concession (which comes only after the writers were repeatedly asked to make just this concession) is an olive branch - everyone wants the strike to end. Negotiations will continue this week as both sides try to reach some conclusion.

The writers have also made the decision not to picket the ceremony, which bodes well for the rest of the season. The striking writers, so far, have not agreed on an interim deal which will allow them to be a part of the spectacle. But there does seem to be some hope on the horizon…at last.

Is a Writer’s Strike Imminent?

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Reality, American Idol, Gossip, News

Writing HandIt’s been making headlines for months as negotiations continue to drag, but that doesn’t mean the bomb has been completely defused. In fact, it’s ticking louder than ever before. The union representing TV and film writers (the Writers Guild of America) is currently trying to work a deal with the networks and studios (the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers)—unfortunately, things aren’t going well.

Back in 1988 during the famous writers’ walkout, the entertainment industry lost an estimated $500 million when writers refused to produce scripts. Today? A strike would be even more damaging. The current issues up for debate include splitting revenues for new media, and whether reality shows should be unionized. The guild could call for a strike as early as November 1, which would really put a damper on the fall season…and even the mid-season, if things aren’t worked out. As a result, studios have moved up production schedules to shoot as many new episodes as possible, before any work has to stop. Extra script orders are coming in…which isn’t making it any easier for the possibly-striking writers. The good news is that reality shows don’t use writers (at least, that’s the official story), so fan favorites like American Idol should be safe from the threat…but that also means the mid-season could be crammed with reality and re-runs…and not a whole lot more.
