General Hospital’s Heart Disease Awareness Effort Strikes an Awkward Note

Sonya Eddy, Nurse JohnsonOK, I know it is for a good cause and all but I couldn’t help feeling a bit icky yesterday when one of the characters on ABC’s mentioned a brand name product he liked: Campbell’s V8 Fusion drink.

This not-so-subtle plug was a result of teaming up with Campbell’s Soup Company and the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women”  effort to raise awareness about the dangers of heart disease in women. The February-long effort spans ABC’s entire daypart including heart disease related topics on The View and as ABC’s press release states “cause-related marketing” on ABC’s Soapnet cable channel.

Some of the shows are able to weave the important public service message in fairly seamlessly. On ABC’s this integration of reality and storyline will culminate in a “Go Red” Valentine’s Day Ball hosted by usual enemies Dorian Lord and Viki Davidson. Viki has a history of heart disease and most soaps can’t go more than a few months without a ball storyline anyway.

ABC’s is working in the concept by having the ladies of the fictional Fusion Cosmetics host a “Go Red” Fashion Show. Not too much of a stretch there either.

Another Mark Burnett Show

Mark Burnett I hate to say I told you so… but, well… my prediction last week that Mark Burnett could sell the networks any reality concept has come true! I cannot see the future, but I do know that Burnett is a golden boy when it comes to developing new shows. Heck, with the viewers for Survivor, The Apprentice, Rock Star, and Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader, it looks like he can’t go wrong. So, here we go… the newest reality series from Burnett is called Jingles, which has contestants competing to create winning commerical jingles (hence the name) for real-life products. Oh the product placement opportunities! This is all about selling products, so no doubt we’ll be seeing some heavy hitters jump on board for a chance to be featured on Burnett’s show. According to Burnett, “It’s a very organic way to give advertisers what they’re looking for. It’s totally family-friendly, it’s noncontroversial, and (the product placement) is very organic. It’s not about pushing something that doesn’t belong.” Mmhmm. Right. But, home viewers do get to cast their votes and determine a winner each week, and the winning jingles will be used in a real commercial. Plus the grand prize winner will get a cash prize and a gig with an ad agency. Look for it as soon as next summer.

Garbage Disposal Seen in a Bad Light on NBC’s Heroes

HeroesWhen product placement goes wrong. That’s the issue that garbage disposal maker In-Sink-Erator has with NBC. In-Sink-Erator claims that an episode of Heroes did an injustice to their product. More specifically, in the pilot, the high school cheerleader (played by Hayden Panettiere) puts her hand into said In-Sink-Erator to mangle her fingers. While she has the ability to heal immediately following an injury, the disposal makers claims that the scene “casts the disposer in an unsavory light, irreparably tarnishing the product.” The scene showed a serious injury that resulted from someone putting their hand in the garbage disposal. The company also cried foul about the use of the In-Sink-Erator name, saying “It’s a trademark thing.” No comment yet from NBC, but the garbage disposal company is asking that any future broadcasts of that episode be barred. Currently, it can be seen on NBC’s website.
