If you didn’t see this one coming from a mile away, you aren’t paying attention to popular culture.
E! News reports that Ashley Dupré, the prostitute who ended Eliot Spitzer’s career as New York governor, is developing her own cable reality series.
Dupré, who is 23, is reportedly working with Los Angeles-based Handprint Entertainment on some sort of unscripted reality show, possibly with a dating format a’ la A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila.

Big Brother 10 Cast Revealed
Posted by Jacci Lewis Categories: Prime Time, Reality, CBS, Editorial, Gossip, News, Video,
“Somebody for everyone.” That’s how executive producer Allison Grodner describes the cast of CBS’ Big Brother 10.
After a slide in ratings in the past few installments of the long-running reality show, Big Brother is returning to its roots of throwing actual strangers from all walks of life into one pretend house. This time around producers assure viewers there will be no ex-lovers, no secret father-daughter pairs or long-lost siblings. This is the first time house guests have been true strangers since the third season. (You can see a video clip with the latest contestants after the jump.)
Other than that though, the premise is the same. 13 people try to lie, cheat and steal their way to the $500,000 prize while their every move is monitored by 50 cameras for three months. The producers insist there will be twists, but past relationships aren’t among them.

Bravo Steals Another Reality Idea
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Food & Home, Prime Time, Reality, Bravo, Cable, FOX, Hell’s Kitchen, So You Think You Can Dance, Top Chef, Editorial,
As much as I love Bravo, am I the only one getting tired of their FOX reality rip-offs?
Today, the cable channel announced that it is producing a spinoff for one of Shear Genius‘s competitors from last season. Later this summer, the cameras will be following Tabatha Coffey as she “visits struggling salons in the Los Angeles and New York areas and literally takes over the establishments to whip them into shape.” While some may say a show about hair stylists has nothing to do with FOX, I say this production smells exactly like Kitchen Nightmares.
In fact, Tabatha’s Salon Takeover would be the second time Bravo has adopted a concept already seen on that other network. Hell’s Kitchen debuted in May 2005 while Top Chef coincidentally appeared in March 2006. And how about So You Think You Can Dance? That reality hit program played a part in Step It Up & Dance‘s debut this year.

Real Housewives Takes on Atlanta
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Bravo, Cable, News,
Apparently ‘real housewives’ exist everywhere…
An announcement made by Bravo today had me intrigued yet thoroughly confused at the same time. Just two months after teasing us with news about The Real Housewives of New Jersey, the cable channel has already made plans to dissect the ladies of another city: Atlanta. Does this mean Jersey is no longer a go?
According to the network’s press release, the series will follow “five women from Atlanta’s social elite from NBA and NFL wives to sassy single moms as they juggle their burgeoning careers and busy home lives with the whirl of the south’s hottest city.”

MTV Hills Crew Terrorizes Hollywood Residents
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Drama, Music, Prime Time, Reality, MTV, The Hills, Gossip, News, Rumors,
MTV cannot simply settle for irking television viewers like myself with their silly reality shows. They apparently have to frustrate poor Hollywood resident civilians, too.
Filming their prized “reality” stint, The Hills cast and crew have wreaked havoc among their Hollywood neighbors.
As if the unwanted paparazzi crews are not enough of a nuisance, the filming crew apparently takes up most of the street with their equipment trucks, leaving bright lights shining on the house until late at night when the socialites are not even home!
Not surprisingly, despite these and many more claims, an MTV spokesperson defends the production: “MTV is in accordance with all required production permits, and is working with the city of Los Angeles to assist it with neighborhood concerns that have been raised.”
They sure are good liars over there at MTV.

Janet Jackson Seeks Her Replacement on MTV

Reality TV producers over at MTV have apparently lured pop icon Janet Jackson into developing yet another American Idol-esque series.
“It’s really about finding who’s the next Janet Jackson or Justin Timberlake or Usher,” executive producer David Broome explains; however, I am a bit unsure as to why we would need to find the next Janet, Justin, or Usher when all three are still rather successful artists today. Perhaps a hint at Jackson’s fall from her pop star throne?
Either way you slice it, the upcoming MTV show sounds just like Making the Band to me.
Fearing blatant comparisons to its predecessors, Boome added, “We’ll find it from a pool of people who you wouldn’t typically find it from. We’ll go to YMCAs, church groups, local community centers and try to cast the show.”
Wow! A reality show with a heart? I doubt it.

Paris Hilton Asks: Will You Be My Best Friend?
Posted by Jacci Lewis Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Cable, MTV, Gossip, News,
Paris Hilton has money, looks, street cred from spending time in the pokey and at least the illusion of perhaps somewhere deep down a shred of talent, but what she really needs is a friend…you perhaps?
Us Magazine says that’s the concept for Hilton’s next reality show. Sources, always unnamed of course, tell Us Paris is “tired of the haters and is looking for someone new. She’s looking for someone new and cool who she can trust.” I suspect the bigger question is can you trust her? Let’s hope she cares for her friends a bit better than her dogs or cell phones since she always seems to be losing both.
The project doesn’t have a title yet. Us says it is expected to be picked up by MTV or VH1.

Votes Carry New Weight on Idol Gives Back

After weeks of name-dropping and agenda-pushing, it’s finally here. Tonight is the beginning of American Idol‘s extravaganza Idol Gives Back, a highly-touted charity event that will provide for young people in two countries. Clips of host Ryan Seacrest and judge Simon Cowell during their trip to Africa, made in pre-season preparation, have preceded the event for many weeks now, building anticipation among Idol viewers. With each new promo came more stars clamoring to get involved, and now the star-studded event promises to be one that shouldn’t be missed. It all begins during tonight’s live performance show, where the six remaining contestants will sing touchy-feely songs aimed at garnering more votes than ever. Voting is especially essential for Idol watchers this evening, because it’s through votes the Idol Gives Back event will gather its funding.

Is American Idol Losing the Ratings War?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Drama, Music, Prime Time, Reality, CBS, FOX, American Idol, Grey’s Anatomy, Ratings,
America’s most-watched reality show may be losing some of its appeal – or, at the very least, some of its viewers. Last year’s season of American Idol drew record numbers, some nights bringing in thirty million viewers or more. This year…well, the ratings are a little lower. Idol is still definitely on top even with a paltry seventeen million viewers, but the FOX hit is just barely the most popular show. Coming in at a too-close second is Grey’s Anatomy, the runaway CBS hit that has everyone talking and watching. Though American Idol and Grey’s Anatomy air at different times, the scripted drama is slowly overtaking the King of reality shows. Right now, fans can still watch both – but will Grey’s go for a more direct competition next season? And if they do…will Idol still continue to win the ratings war?

Survivor Returns, This Time In Panama
Posted by Rhys Alexander Categories: Prime Time, Reality, CBS,
CBS has announced the cast for the twelfth season of Survivor, premiering February 2nd. This edition of the reality mega-hit takes place in Panama, and features the standard cast of model-type Gen X and Y-ers, with the occasional middle-aged anomaly to add ‘balance.’ At this early stage, I predict Misty as the winner, a beauty who looks like she’s hiding something under that innocent smile. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see what drama unfolds. Who do you think will make it to the final round? Place your bets below!
