Bright and early this morning, Chandra Wilson and Jim Parsons announced the nominees for the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards.
Just like last year, we saw many first-timers named and a long list of cable acknowledgements (for both pay and basic channels). Thanks to expanded categories, we also saw a number of surprises (Flight of the Conchords, Family Guy) and overdue nominations (How I Met Your Mother, Big Love).
For the second year in a row, Mad Men, with its 16 nominations, topped all drama programs. Meanwhile, 30 Rock broke comedy records with a whopping 22 noms. Overall, HBO was the most-nominated network with 99 mentions while NBC - yes, NBC - came in second.
This year’s ceremony will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris on Sept. 20 on CBS.

Idol Gives Back: Just as Good the Second Time Around?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Editorial

Last year, American Idol’s charity spectacular was still shiny and brand-new. Everything was a surprise, everything was unexpected. Two theaters were packed with partygoers, celebs, singers and cameras. The contestants were given a week without eliminations, and the viewers were given more A-list performers than they could quickly name. In a two and one half-hour broadcast that still ran long, Idol did it again this year. Was giving back as successful this second time around?
American Idol’s charity special still earned the highest ratings of Wednesday night, but the numbers were down from last year. In fact, the numbers were the lowest for Idol since a 2005 pre-taped broadcast. The stars were bigger, the performances more astounding and the promos even more exhausting. So, where did it all go wrong?

On a special post-Oscar show, late night host Jimmy Kimmel issued a response to the now classic Sarah Silverman/Matt Damon video. (If you haven’t seen it yet, you can watch it here.)
Although it wasn’t nearly as funny as the original creation, the video did have some choice cameos:
Late Night Hilarity: Silverman’s Special Gift to Jimmy Kimmel

Last night, Jimmy Kimmel Live! celebrated its five year anniversary on ABC. To help mark the occasion, comedienne Sarah Silverman presented a very special message to her long-time boyfriend:
Sarah Silverman’s Success
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Comedy, Cable, Gossip, Renewals
Female-led shows on Comedy Central haven’t done so well in the past, but all that might be changing thanks to loud-mouthed, obstinate Sarah Silverman. The comedienne’s show was renewed by the cable channel, solidifying her as a comedy success. Silverman co-writes and co-produces The Sarah Silverman Program, in addition to carrying the lead role for the series. Last week’s season premiere found the show in a cushy spot on Comedy Central, appearing right after the channel’s most popular program: South Park. The debut showed Sarah yelling at the clergy, arguing about abortion, and in general making audiences laugh.

Sarah Silverman Comments on Britney Jokes
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Award Shows, Comedy, Cable, Gossip
Sarah Silverman, current Comedy Central golden girl, is still fielding comments springing from her Britney Spears VMA jokes. The comedienne is getting a lot of flak for calling Brit’s babies “adorable mistakes,” which Silverman maintains was meant to be a harmless joke. She went on to say she doesn’t want to be involved in a feud with Spears – or any girl half her age. Silverman is known for her off-the-cuff remarks and somewhat lewd jokes, but the touchiness surrounding this year’s award season has created more press than the results of the awards themselves. Everyone is so busy looking for controversy, we no longer have any idea what happened with any of the awards. And the Oscars haven’t even happened yet.

The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Award Shows, Music, Prime Time, Cable, MTV, Cable/Satellite
Before this evening’s festivities begin, the producers of the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards should really thank the scandal-plagued artists who’ve unintentionally thrown publicity their way. Tonight, we’ll be thinking about those performers who’ve canceled because they need to be in rehab (Amy Winehouse) and closely watching those who should probably go back (Britney Spears).
We’d been warning you for weeks that this would be a one-time only telecast, but in case you forgot—we hope this helps. And for those who live on the West Coast (like me), you can play along and read our coverage as if it were in real-time:

Video Music Awards Take on Vegas
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Prime Time, Cable, Cable/Satellite
OK, so the MTV Video Music Awards are not one of my favorite awards programs. For one, I don’t even get to see music videos anymore because of all of the reality programming on the music networks. Whatever happened to the days when the music channels actually showed videos? Maybe I’m showing my age here, but when I was a kid (wow, don’t I sound old), there were videos on every hour of the day. Sigh. Those were the days. The VMA’s are trying to change things up a bit this year by making the celebration last all weekend—and filming the show at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas. The producers plan to use the entire property, moving away from the stale stage format that every other awards show employs. Will it make the show any more watchable? Eh, don’t count on me tuning in. If you’d like to check it out, it airs on September 9th.
