Idol Gives Back: Just as Good the Second Time Around?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Editorial

Last year, American Idol’s charity spectacular was still shiny and brand-new. Everything was a surprise, everything was unexpected. Two theaters were packed with partygoers, celebs, singers and cameras. The contestants were given a week without eliminations, and the viewers were given more A-list performers than they could quickly name. In a two and one half-hour broadcast that still ran long, Idol did it again this year. Was giving back as successful this second time around?
American Idol’s charity special still earned the highest ratings of Wednesday night, but the numbers were down from last year. In fact, the numbers were the lowest for Idol since a 2005 pre-taped broadcast. The stars were bigger, the performances more astounding and the promos even more exhausting. So, where did it all go wrong?

Jonas Brothers Get Reality Series
I couldn’t hum one Jonas Brothers song to you if my life depended on it—but I have a feeling I’ll become quite acquainted with their tunes soon. The Disney Channel has announced big plans for the three siblings, which means a heavy dose of promotion will shortly follow.
The cable network - already responsible for the popular High School Musical franchise and that girl we know as Hannah Montana - will now be giving the singing trio their own reality program.
The series, currently titled Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream, will show clips of the guys in their daily lives—prepping for their concerts, interacting with family, etc. The episodes are slated to air sometime this spring.
The overexposure of the brothers will not be limited to this reality skein. Disney already plans to feature the Jonases in a two-hour movie and a scripted series.

Why American Idol Let David Hernandez Stay
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Editorial, Gossip, News
Yesterday, we told you about the latest controversy surrounding American Idol‘s David Hernandez. (To summarize quickly: he was a male stripper/dancer who performed fully nude for mostly male clients.)
Given Idol‘s decision to boot frontrunner Frenchie Davis off the show back in 2003 (after news of her racy lingeries photos leaked out), it was reasonable for people to worry about Hernandez’s fate. But in an interview with TV Guide, executive producer Ken Warwick made it (surprisingly) clear that the issue was a non-issue.
Here are some choice quotes from that Q&A:
When asked if David Hernandez’s fate would be affected by the revelation:
“No, it won’t make any difference. The truth is, we’re never judgmental about what people do to earn a living. They’ve got to put food in people’s mouths.”
When asked if he knew about David’s past:
“No, I wasn’t. But the truth of the matter is, it wouldn’t have made any difference. “

Digging Up the Dirt on More American Idols
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Gossip, Video
We all knew someone from American Idol would eventually have their trash uncovered….but four different contestants?
Last week, Amanda Overmyer’s brush with the law was revealed. This week, we have a foul-mouthed boy, a former male stripper and a girl who likes to take semi-racy photos with her friends.
First up - Danny Noriega. I’ve hated the pouty mouth singer from Day One. (His attitude overrides any shred of talent he might have.) Now there’s this video that has surfaced on MySpace. It may have been intended as a joke, but I fail to see the humor in it. (I do like making fun of him though.)

High School Musical Spawns a Reality Series
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Kids, Music, Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Gossip, News
Have you ever wondered what it would look like to see young wannabes stab each other in the back for a reality prize? Well, you may soon have your chance!
Disney - with sister channel ABC - has just now come up with a new way to milk the High School Musical franchise to death. Apparently a big screen version of the triquel wasn’t enough; the series has now become the inspiration for a TV reality competition.
After a nationwide hunt for vocal talent, competitors will attend a ‘music conservatory’ to finesse their singing chops. (I’m guessing this would be equivalent to American Idol‘s Hollywood Week?) Details beyond that are quite hazy. Although we should be expecting appearances from HSM stars, what the show’s winner will ultimately receive has not been disclosed. But really - shouldn’t they all just be happy with bragging rights?
ABC is hoping to get the program produced in time for their target audience’s summer break.

Simon Cowell Makes His American Idol Selection
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Features, Gossip
Up until now, Simon Cowell has been very cautious about airing any Idol predictions, probably in fear of a potential backlash. But Cowell didn’t hold back on today’s edition of Extra. I’m guessing Terri Seymour’s association with the show probably had something to do with him being extra chatty. (Terri being his girlfriend, of course.)
According to the American Idol judge, David Archuleta will ultimately be crowned this season’s winner. Simon cited the 17-year-old’s likability and looks (coupled with his ability) as the reasons for his choice.
While I believe David’s “Aw-shucks” attitude will soon tire with me (if it hasn’t already), I have to admit tonight’s rendition of John Lennon’s Imagine was undeniably gorgeous. (If you missed the show, you can see him take the stage after the jump.) Sadly, based on Tuesday’s generally crappy performances, Archuleta really wouldn’t have to do much to take it all.

The Best and Worst Grammy Acceptance Speeches
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Award Shows, Music, CBS, Editorial, Video
In my opinion, these two artists earned the distinction of delivering both the Best and Worst speeches at last night’s Grammy Awards.
Amy Winehouse - who looked genuinely shocked at her Record of the Year Award - reminded us all about her recent scandals when we should have been focusing on her talent. To her “incarcerated” husband, Blake - Happy Valentine’s Day!

Name That Commercial’s Tune
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Commercials
As frequently as I use my Tivo, there always seems to be a ad or two that somehow manages to get past me. And much to husband’s dismay, I’ll can easily find myself singing the commercial tune all day long. These are the ones that have been driving me (and probably millions of others) delightfully batty over the past few weeks:
Commercial: iPod Nano commercial
Description: You catch glimpses of a video on different colored iPods.
Song lyrics: One Two Three Four/ Tell me that you love me more/ Sleepless long nights/ That is what my youth was for/ Old teenage hopes are alive at your door/ Left you with nothing but they want some more/ Oh, you’re changing your heart/ Oh, You know who you are
Song name: ‘1234’
Performer: Feist
Commercial: JCPenney commercial (“Magic”)
Description: Strange, magical things surround women wearing JCPenney clothing.
Song lyrics: Life inside the music box aint easy/ The malots hit the gears are always turning/ and everyone inside the mechanism/ is yearning to get out.
Song name: ‘Music Box’
Performer: Regina Spektor
Commercial: Journey Diamond Jewelry commercial (“Sleeping Beauty”)
Description: Man gives his wife a diamond necklace while she’s sleeping.
Song lyrics: How can I tell you that I love you, I love you/ I long to tell you that I’m always thinking of you/ But I can’t think of right words to say.
Song name: ‘How Can I Tell You’
Performer: Cat Stevens was the song’s original performer, but the 30-second cover for the commercial was done by Chan Marshall (who also performs under the name Cat Power). Unfortunately, her version is not currently available for purchase…she only recorded a snippet of the full song.
Commercial: Old Navy commercial (“Sweaters”)
Description: Woman getting through her day with different sweaters.
Song lyrics: If you are chilly, here take my sweater/ Cuz I love the way you call me baby/ And you take me the way I am.
Song name: ‘The Way I Am’
Performer: Ingrid Michaelson
Hilary Duff Returns to TV
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, Cable, News
It’s not another Lizzie McGuire, but Hilary Duff is again making her way to the small screen. The actress/singer who was once the world’s most famous tween will have her own reality show on MTV. Titled This Is Now, the show airs Monday nights at 9:30 and features Hilary living her normal, whirlwind life as she tours with her new album Dignity and lives the life as one of Hollywood’s hip. The singer’s security staff had a scare recently while she was doing promotion for the album. During an interview, a man in the crowd made loud, verbal threats to kill Duff. The man was subsequently tackled and taken down by security, and Duff continued with her regularly-scheduled meet and greets, proving that Dignity is an apt title for her album. Fans who have been dying to get a peek at Duff’s inner world have only to tune to MTV to see her in her element.

Prince Insults Paris Hilton On Stage At Club?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Reality, Gossip, Rumors
Pop singing Prince has been known for years as having somewhat interesting vocals, crazy fashion sense, and a penchant for rather shocking behavior. It seems only natural that he should partner on stage with Paris Hilton, whose scanty wardrobe is often enough to distract fans from her rather lackluster singing. According to Us magazine, Prince was ready to ignite the stage at Club 3121 at the Rio in Las Vegas less than one week ago today. This is one of the stops on Prince’s latest “comeback” tour, and he crooned to a huge crowd that included Hilton before pointing her out and inviting her to join him on stage. Paris, always elated to be in the spotlight, was quick to join him for a duet. Reportedly, Prince handed Paris the microphone before smiling at the crowd, “Let’s see if she can really sing.” Paris, enraged, stormed off stage and left the club shortly thereafter. So far, the story is not being confirmed by Hilton reps, and Prince’s people are maintaining “no comments” to the media. Did it happen? Does it matter? So, Prince knows Paris can’t sing – everyone who has heard her already came to that realization.
