Silenced: Isaac Hayes
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Animation, Cable, Editorial,
Older generations know him as the smooth, deep-voiced singer who won countless awards for the Shaft theme song. Younger generations remember him as South Park’s Chef, that singing Lothario who dispensed earthy advice with cafeteria-created Salisbury steak. He was Isaac Hayes, and sadly he was silenced this past Sunday at the age of 65.
Hayes was pronounced dead in Memphis, TN after being found by a family member in his home. Hayes first gained attention in 1969 for his unique look and mellow tones in the album “Hot Buttered Soul.” Hayes even did some rapping on the album, long before the genre itself existed. But it was the Shaft theme song which helped rocket Hayes to lasting success in 1971. “That was like the shot heard round the world,” Hayes recalled during an interview conducted in 1999. Hayes performed the song, decked out in gold chains, for the 1972 Oscars ceremony (he received a standing ovation for the performance). He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

South Park Episodes Available On Own Site
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Animation, Comedy, Cable, Internet,
Tired of piecing together videos of South Park from YouTube? Well, the creators of the show are too.
To alleviate all the wasted time spent searching, Trey Parker and Matt Stone are offering fans of the show an easier way to keep up with the series. They are now making every single episode of the program available on one site. And for free! In a joint statement, the duo said: “We got really sick of having to download our own show illegally all the time, so we gave ourselves a legal alternative.”
Although the shows are currently running ad free, expect that to change sometime in the near future. Current episodes can also be found on the site though they will experience a short blackout period.
The site (which can be found here) has already had seen several million visitors since debuting last week.

Sarah Silverman’s Success
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Comedy, Cable, Gossip, Renewals,
Female-led shows on Comedy Central haven’t done so well in the past, but all that might be changing thanks to loud-mouthed, obstinate Sarah Silverman. The comedienne’s show was renewed by the cable channel, solidifying her as a comedy success. Silverman co-writes and co-produces The Sarah Silverman Program, in addition to carrying the lead role for the series. Last week’s season premiere found the show in a cushy spot on Comedy Central, appearing right after the channel’s most popular program: South Park. The debut showed Sarah yelling at the clergy, arguing about abortion, and in general making audiences laugh.

The 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Coverage

The 59th Annual Emmy Awards has not even started, yet I’m already sensing sensing a weird vibe about tonight’s telecast. Will the show be a celebration of those young and new (e.g. Heroes)? Will it be a tribute to those bowing out (James Gandolfini and crew)? Or will performer Kanye West somehow manage to cast a controversial shadow over the rest of the ceremony?
What a difference a year makes. Twelve months ago, we were still handing out trophies to stars from Will & Grace and The West Wing (those shows feel so five-years ago now). Today, we welcome a new crop of nominees including Ugly Betty and 30 Rock for Best Comedy. Last year, we were entertained by an always-hilarious Conan O’Brien. This year, we are threatened by a song and dance number from this year’s host, Ryan Seacrest. Last August, 24 snagged the award for Best Drama. This September, it’s not even nominated (yet somehow Boston Legal is).
I think it would be safe to assume the voters would predictably (and respectfully) shower The Sopranos with honors, but I’ll still be crossing my fingers for an upset sometime tonight. We’ll need something to talk about tomorrow…
Here’s the play-by-play of tonight’s events coming to you from the neglected West Coast!

Comedy Central Signs On For Three More Seasons of South Park
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Animation, Comedy, Prime Time, Cable, Renewals,
Comedy Central has announced a $75 million deal with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of the animated hit South Park. Through the terms of the deal, three more 14-episode seasons of South Park will come to the cable channel. This will carry the series through 2011, marking a decade and a half of those four foully potty-mouthed tikes. Now that the animated cable show has scored such a big payout, which includes a share of digital revenues, questions are being raised. Will other big ratings-grabbers demand similar payouts, and a stake in Web share? Meanwhile, Comedy Central is in negotiations with Jon Stewart, beloved host of The Daily Show. Stewart’s current contract expires in 2008.
